Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Funky Friday in Patterns and Orange; Brunch in Silk (and a Wee Shop); Triple Adidas Breaking in Gold at Garrick's

Welcome back, Gentle Reader! It's been a lovely weekend, only marred by the slight smokiness in the air.

First is Friday's funky outfit, a mix of neutrals with a big ol' pop of neon orange.
This new-to-me jacket was the starting piece, and then I mixed patterns with the skirt.

  • Jacket - Sasaki Art, consignment; purchased here for $53.00
  • Blouse - Zoe + Sam, thrifted; last worn here (2nd outfit) in August 2023 tied over a vintage dress
  • Skirt - Cydney Mar, vintage 90s, thrifted; last seen here (3rd outfit) in April for a dinner out at the pub
  • Shoes - Miz Mooz, thrifted; last worn here (2nd outfit) in July with my Laurie dress

I wanted the extra sun coverage - it was up to 27 - and liked how the long sleeves of this silk blouse peeked out of the wide sleeves.
The silk also did not stick to the raw-ish cotton fabric.

The skirt is a swooshy mesh, sewn in tiers, with a side-slitted lining.
See? There's my leg.

I only took the jacket off when I first arrived in the office, glowing from my walk and the stairs.
When I saw one of our VPs today, we laughed - we were both wearing a neon blouse (hers was pink) with a black bottom and neutrals sandals. Great minds...

Incognito. I walked to and from work like this.
I preferred the jacket's single button done up, and wore it like this for most of the day. I found the lack of pockets annoying - nowhere to stash my work phone when I'm making the rounds of the office.

The stuff:
Find of the year! These thrifted sandals are amazingly comfortable.

  • Belt - Suzi Roher, vintage, thrifted

Silver bling:
I used the belt to hike the hem of the skirt up a bit higher so that it didn't drag on the ground.

  • Necklace - Mexican, consignment, Powell River
  • Silver S cuff - Mexican, consignment, Sidney
  • Lucite/silver bracelet - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Vancouver
  • Anneke & Lars silver ring - vintage mall
  • Silver/onyx ring - Tocara, vintage fair
  • Silver earrings - consignment

L was out on Friday night for a while, so I watched the Olympics until he got home, then trounced him at board games. We were up early on Saturday - Ultimate Frisbee has finally returned! I decided last year to quit playing - I played for 22 years and now I feel a little fragile to be bouncing off people and sprinting around on a bumpy field. I'm a delicate f**king flower!

I enjoyed a quiet morning to myself, then got ready for brunch at John' s Place.
We'd had some other plans that changed at the last minute, but I'd intended on having a good shop at the Pandora Ave. Women in Need (WIN) store anyways.

  • Jacket - Dolce & Gabbana, vintage 90s, thrifted; last worn here (2nd outfit) in June with a painty maxi skirt
  • Bodysuit - Madewell, thrifted; last seen here in October 2023 with autumn whites and acid wash
  • Silk palazzo pants - Pinkerton, consignment; last worn here in May 2023 with my red tunic
  • Sneakers - Adidas, thrifted; last seen here in June for a trip to the mall

I dressed for shopping and a semi-warm day.
Nick, L and I walked to town together, enjoying the sunny day.

These silk pants are so light and airy.
And they have pockets! Rock on!

Without the jacket, which I only took off at John's Place.
The bodysuit is a dark grey-blue and is very soft. I also like that it has a very long tab for doing up in the crotchal region. Always a factor with bodysuits!

Incognito.
I shopped for a few hours in the afternoon, then hopped the bus home to change and then come back downtown.

Accoutrements;
I tied the scarf onto my purse - it's just for show!

  • Purse - Rebecca Minkoff, thrifted
  • Silk scarf - Fluevog

The stuff:
Super comfy sneakers, although after standing on concrete for hours while I shopped...my feet were tired.

Oops-I-forgot-a-bunch bling:
I took the "stuff" picture, then realized I still had the necklaces on - I also remembered the brooch from my jacket.

  • Belt - Lady Footlocker, vintage 80s, thrifted
  • Brooch - Fairweather, c. 1986, gift from Mom & Dad
  • Mixed stones/pearl/silver bracelet - Salt Spring Island, gift from L
  • Earrings - vintage, c. 1995
  • Silver/kyanite ring - consignment
  • Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Silver/amethyst ring - vintage mall
  • S Celtic pendant - vintage 90s, gift from Mom & Dad
  • Amethyst pendant - vintage 80s, gift from Mom & Dad

I took a picture of Nick and L at John's Place.
They're both still in their Ulti workout gear. Hey, hey, my boys.

I started my thrifting next door at the Beacon Ave. thrift store where I found a replacement from my old Vivienne Westwood Red Label blazer - it's now too small for me, so is for sale in Limbo.
This is a beautiful grey blazer, classic one-button with two full pockets.

It's by former mall standard Jacob, and was made in Canada.
It would have retailed for around $250 new. Imagine my surprise when green tags came up half price - I only paid $5.50 for this!

I also spotted these bamboo/cotton joggers with pockets.
The screenprint images are a dead giveaway if you live in Victoria.

Smoking Lily, of course! They practice sustainable "no waste" and ethical production - everything is made here in town - and their stuff is excellent quality, very long-lasting and sturdy.
I actually forgot these and went back for them - phew, they were still there. $6.00 is a bargain - similar pants (here, all links 'cause I love!) are $92.00.

I then continued on to WIN up the street, where I had to take a picture of this bonanza of Indiana Glass Company on their entrance display. Every piece of red/clear glass on here is someone's collection, obviously. I've never seen some of the giant pieces in person before!
I don't collect this colour (clear/red) - I only collect amber (and sometimes olive green) - so I was good and did NOT buy any. I did fill in the staff person on the make and era (1970s).

I spent some time going through the accessories, and found a new pair of Calvin Klein tights for $4.95.
I also found a couple of scarves in bright colourways.

This is your classic backside-is-wool/front-is-silk men's scarf.
It's by Perry Ellis and was made in Italy - it was $12.95. Based on the label and consulting the Vintage Fashion Guild's label resource (link here), this is probably from the 80s, during the Marc Jacobs era.

I realized lately that I don't have a scarf with the classic nautical colours in it, so I've been looking for a good graphic that doesn't look too "Love Boat."
This beautiful Saint James silk scarf is navy/white/red/cobalt blue - $9.95 seemed good. I guessed this is not that old (machine-sewn edges). I spotted a similar colour-way on a secondhand site for $45.00.

I bought this shirt for L - he always needs new colourful shirts to wear with his suits/ties for work.
It's a lovely salmon pink.

Some weird twisted thing going on with the buttons on one sleeve.
But you can see the nice jacquard-woven fabric there.

It's L's size, and the price was right - $28.95. Men's shirts are stoopid expensive new!
I'm sure this would have been at least $100 new.

I spent close to 3 hours going through the whole store - I'm very picky about what I buy.
I could not leave this on the racks - it's too lovely, even though it's not my size (it's too big for you too, Mom!).

I love the vivid red, and all this gorgeous hand beaded detail, which does carry about to the back of the neck.
Not a loose bead!

It's a size 16, and I know one of my friends/clientele will like this.
100% silk!

For $7.50!! This was half off due to the star punch.
Windsmoor was sold at the Bay department store for years and I know they were very pricey - I'm sure this would have been $100-125 new.

I tried everything on over my bodysuit/silk pants - no fitting rooms at WIN - and really loved how this knit looked on me.
I am a fan of this grassy olive colour, and I like how the knit is curved out over the hips.

It's a synthetic mix, but is as soft as cashmere.
It's also fully washable.

It's by Hudson North, an in-house brand by the Bay (aka the Hudson's Bay Company), launched in 2022.
I spied a similar one on the Bay's website on sale for $94 (regular $125), so my $19.95 was a good deal. I'm not sure yet if this will be an around-the-house dress or if I'll wear it In Real Life. It's tucked away for fall.

The cut of this olive green top appealed to me.
It's similar in vibe to the jacket I wore above on Friday.

I am a fan of interesting construction, like the "step" cut of the hem:
Although it's all the same colour, the panels are different weaves of cotton for a textural mix.

100% organic cotton from Japan, and made in the USA?! Take my money!
Also - XS? How big and baggy is this supposed to be, anyway? It fits me, so pfft, whatever.

It's by Atelier Delphine and was $14.95. I've never heard of this brand, or its founder, Yuka Itzutsu (here) - I love finding out about small designers through thrifting!
This is called the Block Top and the colour is called Hunter Green...and it retails for $341.00 (here, if you want to be twinsies - it comes in other colours).

I was really excited about this wonderful yellow floral tunic, as I recognized the name from Vix's thrift finds.
This is called a kurta (a long tunic with slits up both sides), and it's meant to be worn with wide-legged trousers.

A little brand tag hiding at the top of one slit.
I love finding little details like that.

It's cotton/linen, which I'd already figured out from the feel of it.
Made in India.

Of course, it's by Biba!
This is actually still for sale on their site here, for $32.00.

New with tags, and a spare button too.
I actually paid a bit more than it is selling for new, but oh well, at least my money goes to WIN.
$36.95, and this was my splurge of the day. I'm excited to wear it!

However, THIS was my Find of the Day!
It's that really deep cobalt blue, and it's a gloriously swooshy dress with two layers of chiffon in the skirt (and a polyester lining).

A chiffon ruffle around the neckline.
It has big loops for a belt - I think it was probably a rigid cloth-covered belt.

Sheer chiffon sleeves, ending in a tightly-buttoned cuff.
When I put it on, I exclaimed, "I feel like a princess!" and twirled.

I had to push the fabric back to read the whole tag.
Ann Hobbs for Cattiva. I couldn't find anything about her online, but she specialized in evening dresses in the 80s up till the early 90s and her dresses were sold at the big department stores like Saks and Bergdorf Goodman. I saw some listings calling this 70s, but it's got matching shoulder pads, which puts this in the early to mid-80s.

It's a pre-Great-Size-Shift size 12 (a modern size 8), and was made in the USA, of 100% polyester.
$24.95?? That's too good to leave on the rack, and I have the perfect event to wear this to! This was a very happy-making purchase.

I didn't have much time to get ready before we headed back to town to join up with some of the "old gang" (the pre-Winesday/MANday crew) to hang out with our pal Kelly, who was in town visiting from Powell River.
Canada's B-Boy Phil "Wizard" of Vancouver won the gold medal in Breaking that day (story here) so I did an homage.

  • Dress - Adidas, consignment; last seen here (3rd outfit) in June 2023 for Winesday in Vero's backyard
  • Tulle skirt - Adidas, consignment; last worn here in July for Mom-Day at Colquitz Creek
  • Sneakers - Adidas Harden Vol. 3 "Imma Star", consignment; bought for me by L here for $125.00 last week

It's a triple Adidas for the gold!
This is one of the Weird Adidas pieces I've accumulated over the years - the dress features flounces, ruffles and "leg curtains."

I layered my Adidas tulle skirt underneath (along with little black sporty shorts and a black camisole), and turned it sideways to show the stripes.
My friends were enthusiastic and loved the thematic ensemble.

The Garrick's Head has TVs and was replaying the Olympic coverage, so we all got to watch Phil Wizard's winning performance. Woo!
The back "curtain" part of the dress billows back when I walk - the nylon is very thin.

Incognito.
We cabbed home - it was late and we were tired.

Accoutrements and stuff:
First wearing of these new-to-me funky sneakers and I loved them. I probably should have changed from my lilac socks but eh, shrug, did not care that much.

  • Purse - Roots 73, thrifted

Gold ring bling:
I looped the long chain necklace around twice, and layered both bracelets over my ruffled sleeves.

  • Gold chain necklace/bracelet - consignment; purchased here for $45.00
  • Eelskin hinged bracelet - vintage 80s, thrifted
  • Gold-plated sterling ear-cuffs - consignment
  • Gold hoop earrings - 5th anniversary gift from L

I took a few pics with my phone.
Arriving at the Garrick's Head Pub - I see Chris, Ali and Rosanna are already there in the window on the left. L wore a lot of red - very dapper.

Rosanna, Ali, Chris and longtime pal Steve G.
So nice to see everyone! Ali's wearing a top she got from me - a CABi from my very last shop at the Patch (purchased here in 2022).

Greg and Casey.
Casey and Nick were at the Philips Backyarder concert earlier.

A good pic of L, with Nick and Kelly beside him.
We hung out for about 3 hours.

Kelly gave me "googly eyes!" face on our selfie.
Kel, you doofus, I have missed you! We've been friends as long as I've known L (and Nick and Casey) - since 1995!

Rosanna and L.
Rock on, you badass kids. I adored Rosanna's rhinoceros beetle necklace.

And me and L outside, about to flag down a cab.
Here's to you, my love! Thanks for such a fun weekend!

And here's to YOU, Gentle Reader! Thank you - as always - for stopping by!

  1. So much visual interest between the Funky Friday outfit, Comfy Saturday shopping outfit and Weird Adidas outfit! To my eye each is a fun example of expressing personality and mood via clothing. Looking forward to seeing your new pieces incorporated into outfits. Wonderful selfie of you and L! And I appreciate that you, L and friends must be known at some of the pubs because you always manage to find tables large enough to accommodate your gatherings with friends!
    Cheers, Laurie

  2. Sounds like a lovely weekend indeed. Mine was rather time in comparison as it was a bit too warm for me: I stop functioning properly at over 25°C ...
I'm loving Friday's patterns and orange outfit and I'm swooning over Saturday's trousers and mixed stones bracelet. As for your "wee" shop, didn't you do well again, although my mind boggles at shopping at close to 3 hours! xxx

  3. What a good weekend! Lovely outfits; I loved the Sasaki Art jacket ensemble in particular. You found some fab bargains. It was interesting to see that the scarves were more expensive than either the jacket or the joggers! Once again you found a brilliant jacket and the Biba kurta was an excellent find and as for the cobalt dress I can tell it will look wonderful on you. Spending time with friends is just the best!

  4. Looks and sounds like a wonderful weekend, Sheila! I do enjoy seeing you out and about with friends, what's the point of having an amazing wardrobe if you don't have a fantastic social life to justify it? You certainly do.
I'm loving Friday's outfit, I'm all about the orange of late! The necklace, the Adidas and the gold trainers reminds me of the 1980s Hip Hop scene when always had Run DMC's Raising Hell on my knock-off Walkman "My Adidas"!
That's a different Biba to the iconic Barbara Hulanicki brand made in England in the 19601s - 1970s. Punjabi for "Young Girl" and a bit like the Indian version of TopShop. There's also another Biba, produced for high street chain House of Fraser and aimed at women of a certain age. It's all very confusing! xxx

    1. Thank you for clarifying about the different Bibas, Vix! I did think this was related to the old 60s one, and was confused when I looked at this kurta's website.

  5. Loved your pop of orange in the first outfit and I ADORE that pale blue studded jacket (you usually wear it with that soft pink top and flowing floral maxi skirt!)
You did well on the finds- I love that silk top. Windsmoor was a popular department store brand here in the UK
I used to have a really similar dress to that Ann Hobbs one but it was by Pearl Lowe!
Looks like you had a fun time with your pals!x
