Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Friday's Pleasing Pleats; Saturday's Sporty Vintage, and a Wee Shop

Welcome back, Gentle Readers! Let's see what I wore this weekend, shall we?

Here's Friday's 'fit to kick this off - I had to wear this new dress.
I am giving it an A (it misses an A+ due to no pockets - I'm a hard marker) and it pleased me greatly to wear it. I expect to see it in 30 wearings, getting a Flashback.

  • T-shirt - Cynthia Rowley, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit) in September 2023 with a vintage skirt for brunch
  • Dress - Uniqlo X Claire Waight Keller, thrifted; purchased here for $19.95
  • Shoes - Sole Talk Lenora, Fluevog; last worn here in June with a pajama jacket
  • Denim jacket (below) - G-Star Raw, consignment, Powell River; last seen here in July over a toile chandelier dress

Colleague Ngoc looked at my layered t-shirt and said, "OH, that's something I should do with my summer dresses!"
I can't take credit for this layering trick - I remember being gobsmacked when I first saw a strappy dress worn with a baby tee under it way back in 1994-5. I copied it then and I've never stopped!

Since I can't wear a camisole-style dress like this without a layering piece, unless I really want my full-support bra front and center, thin garments underneath are essential.
I'm looking forward to layering a green turtleneck plus my blue or green boots - this dress is staying out for fall.

I twirled for colleague Nour, and enjoyed my billowing as I went up and down stairs at the office. I did have to pile the skirt portion in my lap to avoid the office chair wheels.
The colours are much richer in person - and the blue and green print more prominent - under the bright office lights.

I picked a dark denim jacket for the pockets.
I had a plethora of choice for toppers I could have worn, though - I'm excited to pair the dress with other things in my closet.

Incognito.
Temps in the low 20s, sunny, cloudy, windy. Typical summer in Victoria.

Accoutrements:
It's an eagle wing!

  • Scarf - Metropolitan Museum of Art "Eagle Wing" scarf, King Tut exhibit, 1970s, thrifted, Seattle

The stuff:
I enjoyed the subtle inclusion of purple in my accessories and shoes - there is a little bit of purple in the dress' pattern.

Matchy bling:
I love this ginormous necklace.

  • Necklace - J. Crew, consignment
  • Earrings - c. 1995
  • Steel/Lucite ring - Calvin Klein, thrifted
  • Silver/amethyst ring - vintage mall
  • Orange crystal cuff - Loren Hope, consignment, Sidney
  • Steel/purple stone bracelet - Malta, vintage 70s, vintage mall

L spent Friday on Pender Island playing disc golf with buddies, so I had a quiet evening until he got home and joined me for some board games.

I dyed my hair on Saturday morning, then leisurely played in my closet (THE BEST) and came up with a brunch outfit.
"Whatever, just leave."

Vizzini remains unimpressed by our comings and goings.

Post-Ulti, L, Zeb and I walked downtown to John's Place for brunch, and then I stayed downtown for a wee shop.
How to not make vintage look costume-y? Add sporty elements!

  • Cropped hoodie - Adidas, consignment; first seen here (2nd outfit) in April to see Katie Pruitt in concert
  • Cheese curls dress - vintage 70s, consignment; first worn here (2nd outfit) in August 2023 with neon orange tied over it
  • Sneakers - L'intervalle, consignment; last seen here in July with Mom at Finnerty Gardens

This is a dress (here's a pic of just the dress) but a lot of folks that I saw thought it was a skirt.
I loved how this cropped jacket worked over it, and I played up the athletic-wear vibe with a chunky sneaker.

I ran into colleague Viz (not to be confused with Vizzini the Cat) while I was out, who gushed over my 'fit.
The dress is double-knit polyester, and the hoodie is fleece-lined...

...and the day got hotter as it went.
By the time I got home, I was drenched in sweat.

Incognito - this is how most people saw me.
I had oodles of kind comments from people in the various shops I went in.

Accoutrements and stuff:
Even my purse got some love! These sneakers have been an awesome purchase - they go with everything!

  • Purse - Rebecca Minkoff, consignment

Badass bling:
I had nearly as many compliments on my "Mr. T." necklace as I did on my dress. I picked this up retail at Club Monaco over 15 years ago, on final sale from $89.00 (really!!) for only $9.00.

  • Studded cuff - vintage 90s
  • Silver/obsidian ring - consignment
  • Silver/onyx ring - Tocara, vintage fair
  • Black plastic chain necklace - Club Monaco
  • Orange plastic bracelet/ring - Italian, vintage 60s, vintage mall
  • Earrings - vintage fair

And now, a wee shop. I popped into the Beacon Ave Thrift Store after brunch, and found these Adidas track pants.
Love the orange stripes, and they have pockets!

A mere $10.50. Done!
I promised L I would not wear track pants around the house, so I may put these in my workout/walking wardrobe. Or, I might try to style them up with a street-wear vibe.

I also snapped up this Adidas cropped long-sleeved top.
This will be a good weekend sporty piece.

Only $9.00.
Such a deal.

I'd left this tee on the racks the last time I was in, and regretted it.
I watch enough "Antiques Roadshow" to know who Charles and Ray Eames are (link here if you don't, all links 'cause I love, of course). Those are classic Eames chairs.

And I recognized the SPRZ NY x Uniqlo branding from my Andy Warhol tee (this one here), which I'd paid $19.98 for.
"Eames Office" and their logo on the hem.

I spied these online for $25+ and mine was $6.00 - OR WAS IT??
It was actually $3.50, since short-sleeved tops were all half off! I'm not sure if I'll keep this for myself or flip it to one of my friends who likes Eames designs.

I meandered down to Market Square and had a poke through Vintage After Death, where I didn't need to ponder very hard before I grabbed this two-piece set.
EEE! I love the Mona Lisa...only skeletonized and with horns! And the mini-skirt has the "Birth of Venus" as a skeleton!

The back is another skeletal work of art - I don't know this one.
And the back of the skirt is the Mona Lisa again. I can't wait to wear this in October!

It's by Trickz N' Treatz, a division of Dolls Kill, and the top alone retails for $57.00. The bottom doesn't seem to be in stock anymore.
"Leonardo and Botticelli would be proud." For $45.00, I'm happy with it. The skirt is RATHER short, but maybe with some thick tights and tall boots for autumn? I can also hike it up to act as a strapless underlayer for the top.

From VAD, I came out into the centre courtyard of Market Square (this is in "old town" Victoria), where another vintage fair was going on!
I had a wander through, chatted with some vendors, interacted with some customers ("You should buy that!" I often encourage). A shout out to Sara(h?) who was the organizer of this event - she had me do a twirl for the Insta account. Hello!

I had a leisurely browse through Flavour Upstairs next, where I found this Run DMC "King of Rock" tee.
I was attracted to the blue, yellow and red - this will go with a bunch of things in my sporty wardrobe.

It was $19.99.
I might also end up sleeping in it 100+ times.

I poked around in Bric-A-Brac next, where this small shallow copper plate leaped out at me.
Only $3.00, and now I have a nice display for some of my copper jewelry.

I scraped the fuzzed-up old felt nubs off.
It's by "Fantasy" copperware, and is "hand wrought" which means all those dents on the rim are from someone hammering the copper - it's not poured into a mold - and t was made in Canada. There is tons of this stuff on the Internet, but this is a banged-up little plate, not worth more than $10.00.

As I walked home, I noticed a tree's branches waving vigourously. I must investigate!
"Move along, lady!"

I can't resist squirrels.
"Well, I can resist YOU, so try harder!"

She seemed quite cranky, so I left her to her business.

And that's my weekend, my friends! We spent Sunday getting groceries, and lounging about, reading, playing board games and chilling out with Vizzini. I hope you had a fabulous weekend too, and thank you so much for dropping by.

  1. LOVE LOVE the vintage dress and cropped hoodie combo! Adding a mental note about it (not that I wear dresses almost ever.) I do think that layering the tee under the strappy dress looks cute on you also but I can't bring myself to do it. Brings back too many memories of being made to do that as a young teenager in order to be modest due to church expectations. I haven't been since I was a mid-teen but it had lasting effects.

  2. Friday's outfit just made my heart sing, Sheila! I didn't think much of that dress when I saw it on the hanger, but it looks absolutely fabulous on you! Loving the pops of orange from your bling and shoes and that Eagle Wing scarf is stunning.
And although I'm not really into sporty clothes, I think the vintage dress + cropped hoodie is fantastic too. I'm getting the sweaty business though :-) xxx

  6. Love the dress, shoes and jewelry! I can just picture the multitudinous swirling! The dress colors lend themselves to a variety of colors for the under-Tees and I aim eager to see future shirt accessorizing. The dress has such possibilities between soft and sexy to strong and sassy (which is how I see your current outfit.)

The Eames tee is wonderful and speaks to me of iced tea and summer. Now to segue from the summer of the tee to what I see as very definite fall vibes in your vintage brunch outfit. The colors and top cropper make me think of Autumn. Nonetheless, another interesting outfit!

    Cheers, Laurie

  7. The cheese curl skirt (I initially saw cupcakes without my specs) and cropped Adidas is a winner!
You're all set for Halloween now with the skeletal Mona Lisa!
