Mom-Day at Finnerty Gardens - Following the Pink in Chevrons, and a Wee Shop

Hello, my friends! Welcome back to Mom-Day - we visited Finnerty Gardens again (last time was here in April) to shade ourselves from the hot midday sun. I had some fun playing in my closet and creating an outfit for the day.
Mom's seen this skirt before - it's a favourite.

  • Acid wash denim vest - Lola Jeans, thrifted; first seen here (2nd outfit) in May on a Mental Health Shop
  • Top - Barbara Bui, thrifted; purchased here for $7.00
  • Skirt - Louis Feraud, vintage 80s, consignment; last worn here in September 2023 for a Mom-Day at Dallas Road
  • Sneakers - L'intervalle, consignment; last seen here in June for the Day of Indolence

Isn't the chevron pattern amazing?
It's created from sewn stripes - not printed zigzags.

The acid-wash vest has a surprise!
I like the unexpected clash that it brings to the outfit.

I didn't take the denim vest off, but I thought you'd like to see this new-to-me top.
The orange part is silk, the black part is sheer mesh - there is a fine trim of grey cotton knit around the arm-holes.

The back is a mix of the mesh and solid cotton knit (a light sweater-weight).
Rock on! I tucked the front of the shirt in once I put the vest on - if you scroll up, you'll see I'm pointing at the skirt's waistband in the second picture. I preferred the longer proportion of the skirt with it tucked.

Incognito - how most people saw me.
The only downside to this outfit is that I had no pockets! The boob pockets on the vest are useless.

Accoutrements and stuff:
I debated over a few pairs of shoes and ended up with my groovy sneakers. Did you notice I had wee bright orange ankle socks on?

Plastic bling:
I had gobs of sunblock on my arms (ugh, I hate that feeling) so stuck with bits that would wipe clean.

  • Brooch - vintage fair
  • Earrings - West Germany, vintage 80s, vintage fair
  • Striped bracelets - consignment
  • Silver/onyx ring - Tocara, vintage fair
  • Orange cuff/ring - Italian, vintage 60s, vintage mall

The brooch was on one of the vest pockets.

Mom-daughter selfie!
Mom's top was bought in London when we were there together back in 2010 (posts here) and her necklace was from when she and I went to New York City together in 2007 (a few pics of photos here, from when I Flashbacked a dress from that trip).

We arrived to streaming sunshine!
All those tall trees look so shady and welcoming!

Mom and I make decisions on which way to go on the fly. Today, she said, "Follow the pink" - whenever we saw some pink flowers, that's the way we went.
Fat pink rhododendrons still in bloom.

I also seem to have captured every bench in the garden.
Bench spotted!

I think I've taken this view before...
I love the green understory. Some of that is shamrocks!

The pond with the salmon sculpture.
Bench!

Bench 2.0 (it's the same bench).
So inviting.

Which way?
Follow the pink! That way!

I made grabby hands and went right for these gorgeous puff-pall poppies.
At first I thought they were dahlias.

But I know that pod in the background.
This reminds me of those plastic flowers they decorate parade floats with.

Spike balls! These were hard to the touch.
Some sort of thistle.

Another poppy.
It's like crepe paper.

As we walked under this tree we realized...
Apples! Not very big yet - they'll be the size of a fist in a month.

Aggressively green.
Droplets from a recent watering.

We saw hummingbirds, crows and loads of butterflies, but this cabbage moth was the only one I caught.
More pink flowers.

For a change of pace, how about some yellow lilies?
I love that deep rich colour.

Bench!
This dappled light was so lovely and the air was cool and fresh under the giant trees.

More pink!
I can never remember the names of all the flowers and plants. Mom tells me, but it doesn't stick.

We sat on a bench near here and enjoyed a few minutes of sun.
So peaceful. Despite it being noon, there weren't many people around.

There were crows in the trees near this pond, cawing at us.
There must be a nest close by.

These pink hydrangeas were practically glowing in the sun.
So pretty.

Mom and I were amused that both of our tops had lace backs.
The top part of her shirt has a lace insert.

I love that one neon green tree.
A winding path.

This giant tree arched over us like an umbrella.
I see you hiding behind there, Mom!

My favourite stand of bamboo.
Bench!

And before we knew it, we were back at the entrance.
We wandered and strolled through areas we hadn't seen before (or at least didn't recognize!) and spent over an hour just taking it all in.

One last flower.
A camellia bloom that's bigger than my head.

Thank you for such a lovely day, Mom! And when in doubt, follow the pink!
I love you!

We had a scrumptious lunch at Christie's Pub after our walk, and then I strolled home. I stopped in at Pocket (formerly Leche's, one of my old early blog shopping haunts) for a browse.
I bought two pieces of silver jewelry - a pair of earrings and a new ring.

A shout-out to fellow shopper Terisa - we got to chatting while we browsed the same rack of dresses.  She bought a colourful bias-cut slip dress that she completely rocked. So nice to meet you!

I've decided it's time to change up my permanent rings that I wear on my right hand.
I thrifted the jade ring for a dollar, found the floral ring on the sidewalk, and the knot ring was a purchase from a Winesday gift card many years ago. These have been on my hand every day for over 5 years, so when I realized the ring I liked only fit that finger, I made the call.

Time to go solo.
I'll keep the jade ring and the knot ring but will move the floral ring to Limbo.

My new floral ring is stamped .925 for Stirling silver and was $58.00.
Worn daily for a few years? That will go down to nothing for my cost-per-wear.

The hoop/chain earrings are also stamped .925.
They were $26.00.

One came with a silver back - I have a few extra backers if I need one.
But I like the idea of the chain pulled through and wearing them unevenly.

And now, I'd better go feed this little monster.
"That's what I've been trying to tell you."

Thank you so much for dropping by and for reading. I so appreciate it! Have a great weekend, and I'll be back on Sunday with tales of adventure!

It's lovely to see you had a lovely day with your mother.
Vizzini looks onto us in anticipation. I hope he enjoyed his meal, too.
P.S. Those earrings you got are so pretty.

  5. Can you send some of that gorgeous sunshine our way please?
What a lovely day out you had, although I did have palpitations when I saw the bamboo - we're trying to tackle our out of control bamboo at the moment!

  6. I spotted your orange socks immediately, thinking how perfectly they wink up at the orange of your top. :-) I agree that with this skirt the top is best tucked in because look at the way the Chevron accents your waist so perfectly!

I am not in the least bit surprised that you and your Mom both had on lace-backed tops – it's part of the unspoken, unplanned Helen-Sheila Mom-Day-Adventure outfit coordination. ;-)

Appreciating the outfit rings, your former 3 rings and the 1 new ring (to rule them all ;-))
    Cheers, Laurie
