Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Fancy Friday in Gone Gold; Blue Brunch and Simona Shop; Book Club in Bias

Welcome back, my friends! I hope you've had a lovely and enjoyable weekend. It's been a colourful and social one for me, with my Fancy Friday outfit, Saturday's brunch, shopping and Winesday, followed by Book Club on Sunday. I'm exhausted just typing all of that.

Here we are at Fancy Friday - I've given up on the stair pictures, at least until the Daylight Savings time change this weekend when we "fall back."
I said I'd give this jacket another shot, as it didn't quite work out in the last outfit.

  • Jacket - Tangerine Jill, thrifted; last worn here in October with my big pouffy black skirt
  • Shirt - Ann Taylor, consignment; last seen here in September with florals and ruffles
  • Trousers - Noa Noa; last worn here in August 2019 with the origami shirt
  • Shoes - Homers; last seen here in September on a Mom-Day Adventure
  • Coat (below) - L'Atiste, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here in October

And it didn't quite work in this one either, so that's that - off the giveaway pile you go, gold jacket!
Imagine this fabric in a classic blazer cut and it would be a YES from me forever.

So, letting go of that, let's look at these fabulous trousers. They are woven slate blue and antique gold - amazing quality.
No stretch! That's been an issue for me as my weight's fluctuated over the pandemic (nearly two years!) and my thigh mass seems to be migrating to my stomach and boobs. Thank you, menopause.

Consequently, these pants are more comfortable in the legs than they've been since I last worn them in August 2019(!), but are tighter in the stomach.
I can live with that, though - I do love them!

Masked up. I enjoyed the bright gold yellow of the jacket and the mustards in the mask and shoes.
My colleagues in the office (it's a slow trickle of people right now) greatly enjoyed all this colour and textures.

Outerwear - I felt very groovy as you can tell.
This coat isn't really that warm, but the oversized shape works well when I have a blazer or jacket underneath. I pulled part of the yellow jacket's collar out over the coat collar.

Accoutrements:
More blue and yellow in the scarf, plus mustard gloves.

  • Scarf - Forele, vintage, consignment
  • Hat - Catawumpus, gift from Tammy
  • Mask - by Mom
  • Gloves - Parkhurst

 The stuff:
Comfy shoes - I love this style of shoe.

Blue and gold bling:
I layered the necklace under the collar of the shirt.

  • Necklace - Stella & Dot, thrifted
  • Stick-pin - thrifted
  • Amber ring - c. 1997
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Eelskin cuff - mine from the 80s, donated - refound, thrifted
  • Stone bracelet - thrifted
  • Ear-balls - Dior, consignment
  • Collar-tips - German, vintage 90s, Charmaine's

Here's a close-up of the collar-tips.
It looks cool with the necklace.

L and I deliberately set aside our Friday night so that we could hang out together and have some quality time at home after our busy work-weeks. We played boardgames into the wee hours, and crashed on the couch with Vizzini.

On Saturday morning, I got up early and re-lavendered my hair. I like it with a bit of colour in it - this will fade out a bit over the next week.
I wore hues of blues for brunch. The weather went from pouring to windy to sunny, so I was prepared for it all.

  • Sweater - Beechers Brook, thrifted; last worn here layered here in March
  • Skirt - Banana Republic Heritage, thrifted; last seen here in December for a shopping trip with Caro
  • Boots - Steve Madden, vintage mall; last worn here in March with my Ringmaster coat
  • Leather jacket - Elizabeth + James, consignment; last seen here in October

I only took the jacket off while Nick, L and I brunched in the Ruby.
Due to the aforementioned body issues, I was actually pleasantly surprised and happy with how I looked in this outfit.

I look good - and not "for my age", either!
I felt good in it too, which is more important.

This is how most people saw me, when the weather was nicer or I was inside a shop.
I went to MONA and the Velvet Crease after brunch with my colleague and friend Simona, so I was also dressed to try things on.

I also stood in the rain outside the Ruby earlier in this (you must line up to brunch in Victoria, just accept it) and was quite comfortable.
Lots of layers that I could take off/put back on as the weather ebbed and flowed - it was even beautifully sunny for a short while.

Accoutrements:
More blue, in the gloves and sparkly mask.

  • Hat - Catawumpus, gift from Tammy
  • Silk scarf - fake Louis (Lewis!) Vuitton, thrifted
  • Mask - by Mom
  • Gloves - Parkhurst

The boots are too long to lay out on my "stuff " table.
"I'm helping."

The insides of these boots are fake leather and it's starting to disintegrate (ick), so I'm now on the lookout for kickass black boots, over-the-knee preferred.

Long bling:
I liked how this long necklace worked with the long earrings that Petra gave me for my birthday.

  • Necklace - Dots
  • Silver/sodalite ring - Scotland, 1995
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Earrings - gift from Petra

Simona found two tops, which was what she was looking for - hooray! She spotted these luscious red gloves which were a bit too tight on her.
They are slightly tight on me, but comfortable on my fingers, so I know they will conform to my hand and stretch out after a few wears. I love that dark brown trim on the little snap-strap - the trim is repeated up the side of the glove.

They are indeed leather.
Not a thick lining.

New with tags! Wow, $78.00 is a lot for a pair of gloves, even if they do "moisturize and soften your hands" with aloe, Vitamin E and apricot kernel oil???
That's both cool and slightly ooky. I paid $32.00 for these.

I love the long length - this is so nice with coats that have shorter sleeves!
And that is a glorious rich red.

I spent the late afternoon working on this post, then bussed over to Caro's for Winesday. I wore the same outfit as above, only with thick socks and my slippers. I did wear boots for riding the bus, rest assured!

We spent a lovely evening catching up, chatting, eating and drinking. Caro had some clothes for giveaway, and Vero brought a bag too, and I was lucky enough to snag a couple of things.
This skirt comes via Hazel, Caro's mom. It's a bias-cut dark floral.

There's a big swoosh around the bottom, giving it a mermaid flare.
I like the red and purple floral.

It feels like silk, but it's a polyester. It's by Topshop - a tall!
I'm excited to style this up.

I also came away with this lovely brooch, which is about 3 inches across. It's quite solid and has a bit of weight to it.
It's a mix of iridescent clear stones, smoky amber, pale pink and dark green , plus a faux moonstone. I like all the colours.

It has a stamp: Continental. They were a Montreal-based competitor of Sherman (also of Montreal) (info here), and imported Austrian crystals from Swarovski as Sherman did - so these are all real crystals.
They were a lower-priced alternative to Sherman as Continental typically used fewer stones (check out my Sherman necklace/earrings set here), although this particular brooch is packed with them. The big boom in crystal jewelry was in the late 40s to mid-50s, so this is probably from the latter end of that range or into the early 60s.

On Sunday, L and I watched football until it was time to meet up for Book Club at chi-chi new brunch spot Bear & Joey (fabulous food!).
I wore my new-to-me skirt right away. I'm not 100% sure it's "me" but why not give it a shot and find out. It was fine. I'll give it another wearing before I decide.

  • Sweater - Maison Scotch, thrifted; last worn here in January with pinks
  • Skirt - Topshop, swap from Caro; acquired the night before!
  • Boots - Prepare Volunteer, Fluevog; last seen here (2nd outfit) with a grey bubble dress in March
  • Coat (below) - Topshop, consignment; last worn here in February

I added all red accessories, but did incorporate quite a lot of grey into this outfit. Not quite as colourful as I'd like, but eh.
I only wore it for a couple of hours.
The skirt is bias-cut - note how it ripples up the side seam.
Bias-cut skirts are pleasantly swooshy, though.

Masked up.
It was so nice to enjoy a visit with everyone.

I walked there and back.
This coat is notorious for clinging and causing Creep with my clothes, and I did have to pull the skirt down several times.

But it is amazingly snuggly - that plush burgundy shearling is throughout the entire jacket, even down the sleeves.
It rained on the way home, so I tied my silk scarf around my head.

Accoutrements:
This scarf has a bit of purple in it, just like the skirt pattern.

  • Scarf - Elaine Gold, vintage, Lazy Susan's
  • Mask - Lazy Susan's

The stuff:
I'm a fan of these wool-covered leather boots - they are mostly platform so are easy for walking in.

  • Belt - Gap, thrifted

Red bling:
Getting in first wearings of this metal double heart necklace, and the Bakelite cuff.

  • Necklace - thrifted; purchased here for $7.95
  • Amethyst/silver ring - vintage mall
  • Silver/onyx ring - Toccara, vintage fair
  • Silver/acrylic earrings - Tania Gleave, Granville Island
  • Leather/steel cuff - Rimanchik
  • Red/black Bakelite cuff - gift from L, vintage mall, got here (it was $25.00)

I missed my earrings in the Stuff picture!

I hope you're all staying safe and sound. Thanks so much for dropping by!

  1. Madly adore the outfit with your new-to-you floral print skirt. Absolutely gorgeous, classic, chic, fantastic ensemble.

I love that you and L set aside time to savour one another's company after a long workweek. People often think that because Tony and I both work primarily from home (this was in place many years prior to the pandemic) and are thus around each other the overwhelming majority of the time that we must spend our days hanging out 24/7. As delightful as that would be, it's not the case and even we must consciously make time to set aside the demands of work and daily life, and focus on another. Board games are a fave for us as well - especially Scrabble. Nature walks are another and the occasional classic Sunday drive is a beloved fave as well.

I hope that you and L had an excellent first weekend of November and that the horrific weather Van experienced this week spared the Island.

    Big hugs,

  2. Shifting body issues aside-I feel you there- your outfits truly brought color to the weekend. The black and white coat is absolutely gorgeous.

  3. Rocking all the colours, She!
Oh yes, you do look good in the blue leopard outfit - sassy and bursting with confidence. Such a shame that the gold jacket didn't work but you gave it a good try. The new Topshop skirt looks wonderful, such a great shape on you.
Loving the new lerather gloves - how weird about the moisturising properties - I bet someone will invent gloves that instantly santise your hands before too long. xxx

  4. So much to take in!

So sad about the gold jacket, it's a lovely piece.

As blue is my favourite colour of all time, it is not surprising that I love your blue ensemble to bits.

Those leather gloves are absolutely perfect! The colour, the longer wrist length, the style - just everything is perfect. What a lucky find!

Why is it that your most interesting pieces often give you the most trouble?

  5. What a shame about the gold jacket. I think the issue with it is that the waist is too high for you. The trousers are amazing and one of my favourites of your wonderful wardrobe. I loved the shoes too and the necklace and wing tips on the shirt looked fab!

Gloves that moisturise as you wear them? Brilliant idea!

Hope you have a great week,
    xxx

The other outfits were lovely; what a lovely skirt and those grey boots are beautiful. I also loved the suede/shearling jacket. How warm that must be!

  6. What a fun weekend you've had! Ours was once again a bit subdued, although we did manage a successful rummage at the charity shops on Friday.
I'm loving the colours and textures of Friday's outfit. What a shame the jacket doesn't seem to work satisfactorily.
You look absolutely fabulous in Saturday's brunch and shopping outfit. The short leopard print skirt combined with the symphony of blues and those OTK boots is fantastic.
Those leather gloves are fantastic, although I still baulked at the $ 32 you paid for them. Of course, if they've got moisturizing qualities :-)
I'm loving the skirt, even if I'm not really a fan of those rippled side seams. It looks brilliant with all the greys, though. I wonder if it's going to be a keeper ... xxx

  7. LOVE your blue brunch outfit, the entire ensemble! The fit looks perfect for you, the colors are comfortable and vibrant, the proportions just right, and the accessories the icing on the cake. That's an outfit I would wear in a heart beat!

I am also a fan of your book club outfit for the colors (they say "cozy fall" to me) and overall look. Will be curious to see how the skirt pans out (keeper or tosser) in your subsequent wearings.

As for the gold jacket, having received, at best, a lukewarm response from me, I am not disappointed that you are not keeping it. By itself it may be an interesting garment, but it never seemed to enhance any of the outfits.

Your weekend sounds truly lovely, hanging out with L, friends, and food; has me smiling. :-) We had our neighbors over for dinner on Thursday and it felt so good to spend time indoors conversing and sharing a meal. We chuckled in realizing that the last meal we hosted indoors, before the pandemic settled in, was with them, so how perfect to rekindle having friends over with them!

  8. Do you have to cue for all restaurants? And also for dinner? Must be great places! Love the bring outfit, you wear that length of skirts with flair. Love the color combination too. Very 80s.

  9. Great outfits Sheila, I’m loving the blue brunch one; it looks fabulous on you. My favourite.

The Topshop skirt has great flair, nice pattern and length, I hope it will be a keeper; it really suits you,

Shame about the gold jacket….some things have just gotta go!

Sounds like you enjoyed a fun weekend. x

  11. It looks like you and L had a nice weekend. I love your outfits. The golden jacket is cool but if you're not feeling it, better to pass it on. I love the brocade pants and the shoes you paired them with are tres chic. The blue and leopard outfit is fabulous. The OTK boots suit you very well. I like the grey and red styling as well. That pattered skirt is really cute... The metal heart necklace is fantastic. I also like how you paired the studs on the collar with statement necklaces. That was some statement accessorizing. I might return for another look.

  12. I agree with you about the gold coat - the fabric is nice, and in a different cut it might work, but the shape just isn't very flattering, no matter what you wear it with. I love the Blues outfit - definitely way more flattering and funky too.

  13. I've always loved that red leather cuff of yours!

  14. hose blue and gold trousers are really fantastic, and they certainly don't look too tight in the photos. I hope you're able to keep enjoying them!
