Autumn Gold and Black Nature-Magnet

I lucked out and got a useable stair picture this morning - this calls for celebration!
Okay, let's just settle for a colour picture.

  • Silk jacket - Tangerine Jill, consignment; first worn here in August with chrysanthemums
  • Sweater - Judith & Charles, consignment; last seen here in September for a Mom-Day adventure at Mattick's Farm
  • Skirt - Twinset, consignment; last worn here in October 2020 with purple velvet
  • Boots - L'Artiste by Spring Step; last seen here with teal suede in March
  • Leather trenchcoat (below) - vintage 70s, thrifted; last worn here a week ago

I really wanted to wear this thin gold silk jacket in a fall outfit, but I didn't quite get the proportions right here.
The skirt is too big and pouffy for the visual bulk of the jacket, especially that collar/lapel.

I mean, look at this massive skirt. I didn't take the jacket off all day, but doesn't a slimmer top set the bottom off better? If you click back to the previous outfit with the gold jacket, I think you will agree that it needs a slimmer bottom.
This skirt is longer than I remembered - for one, it just skims the ground when I'm walking to and from work...which means I picked up a bushel of leaves, twigs and feathers (!), which Vizzini fiercely pounced on the second I walked in the door.

I am a sucker for this bigass pouffiness, though.
The fabric is very thin and has a raw edge - it's going to need a bit of a trim after my leaf-collecting today!

The other thing about this skirt is that it completely hid my amazing boots.
Yes, those deserve to be seen!

Masked up.
And finally, the skirt is full right to the waist so it pushed the jacket ties up just under my boobs. Not my favourite look. Sigh, at least the autumn gold is pretty, and really, I'm not that bothered by it - live and learn!

Outerwear - I get the weather report from L in the mornings. It was supposed to rain by afternoon, so I dressed for it.
It did not rain - thank goodness, or I'd have a big WET leaf collection attached to the skirt!

Accoutrements:
That's my favourite fedora - it's a snug fit on my head so doesn't blow off in the wind.

  • Hat - Edward Mann, vintage 60s, thrifted
  • Scarf - thrifted
  • Mask - by Mom
  • Leather/wool/cashmere gloves - Roeckl, consignment

The stuff:
Sorry, beautiful boots - I'll wear you again soon, I promise!

Black and gold bling:
My colleague Ngoc loved all my hardware today.

  • Leather/chain wrap - local
  • Necklace - swap from Vero
  • Brooch - vintage, vintage fair
  • Hematite ring - thrifted
  • Amber ring - c. 1996
  • Chain bracelet - thrifted
  • Ear-balls - Dior, consignment

Are any of your clothes nature-magnets?

  1. I have been enjoying all your Autumn styling. What beautiful pieces you wore today. I hope you pair that jacket and those spectacular boots with turquoise before the season is over. I long for the days we had parties, thanks for sharing your celebration.

    1. Thank you so much! Yes, I will wear the boots and jacket again - that's the plan, anyway. We shall see how that intention goes!

I'm glad you enjoyed our party vicariously.

  2. Oh I do love those boots! That jacket was a wonderful find and looks great with the pouffy skirt! I hear you on the leaf collecting, my hair's usually full of them! xxx

    1. They are lovely boots (warm too), Vix. The danged leaves were everywhere!

  3. I'm hearing you on the proportions being a bit off here, as I absolutely loved the outfit you created with the jacket back in August. I do hate when that happens - one of those outfits which only seem to work in one's head - but you said it: live and learn :-) The skirt is a stunner too, but it's a shame it's hiding those magnificent boots! Bess would love playing with that collection of twigs and leaves too. Her current favourite toy are chestnuts :-) xxx

    1. Yes, it looked so much better in my head, Ann!

I ADORE this skirt - I feel like a Goth ballerina in it! I dare not bring any chestnuts home for Vizzini!

  4. Beautiful jacket Sheila! I agree with you on the proportions and with the above comment about your August outfit. The slim Chrysanthemum skirt is the perfect balance for the jacket not only in volume but also in the shiny factor! I do love the black skirt too and love the simple cream sweater with it but I am looking forward to seeing what black magic you can make with it.

  5. Stunning boots Shiela.
Looking forward to see them styled in the future.
Love the colour of your jacket and the very full skirt. x

    1. Thanks, Phyl! I love both the boots and the big skirt - will wear them both again, for sure (I hope).

  6. I like the idea but I agree a slimmer top is better with the skirt. Everything in this outfit is so pretty though so I can see why you wanted to wear it all together - even if the skirt rebelled by getting a little messy, haha!

    1. It looked great in my head, Mica, but in reality, it swamped me.

  7. That jacket is such a beautiful colour and style. The collar reminds me of styling in the 50's so very retro and elegant. I agree the skirt is better paired with a more form fitting top, but it still looked great with the gold jacket none-the-less.

Usually I end up with leaves in my shoes. Not sure how that happens, lol.

    1. Thank you, Nana - I love the gold jacket too and kept it out for its cheery colour and fun style. I'll try again - another outfit!

Lol, I don't get leaves in my shoes! That's a good trick. :)

  8. Definitely want to leave a comment but I haven't yet decided how that jacket makes me feel, and I don't recall my comment from the post where you introduced it! Well, *without* the jacket I quite like your outfit! The swoosh, the proportions, perhaps that's the ticket - the jacket does need a closer fitting bottom, as you noted.

As for the boots and the jewelry, they are simply OH YES!

    1. It's okay - you don't have to like all my clothes, Laurie, and the jacket doesn't really work in this outfit. :)

I love the boots - so pretty!

  9. Good stars, those boots are incredible. I feel like they're exactly the kind of head-turningly magnificent footwear that the Bata Shoe Museum would gleefully build a whole exhibit around.

  11. Oooh, those boots MUST be seen! That skirt is gorgeous though! I would totally wear that for music concerts! It's such a statement! I love that gold coat too but I do agree that the proportions don't quite work with the skirt- still I love the combination anyway!x

    1. I know, and I will wear them again, I promise!

Yes, the skirt is so dramatic, as is the jacket - maybe I just had to much drama!?

  12. I agree that the jacket and skirt don't go well together. Both pieces are wonderful though. And the skirt with that pretty top is dead right.

  13. Aaah, those gorgeous boots.

I have a friend whose maxim is voluminous bottom/fitted top, fitted bottom/voluminous top, and it generally works for her. But rules are meant to be broken, and I tend to wear fitted everything. So none of that's any help with pairing your jacket, but you've got such lovely clothes, you're sure to find more great combos.

  14. Oooh, those boots! I knew you wouldn't disappoint me! You win the L'Artiste boot contest! Nothing I have comes close to the gorgeousness of those!!!
