Jul 10th - Outfit #10 - Floral and Suede

Today was a hot one! Up to 25 Celcius (about low 80s), which is pretty hot for us! No one here has air conditioning (in your house? what for?), just malls and office buildings.

If you haven't seen Mary Walker's wonderful drawings, you must check them out. Check out the amazing drawing* she did of my Sunday shopping outfit! I love the comments she adds to the items. She's sending the original to me! I will be adding it to my gallery of blogger art, along with my Megan drawing (seen behind my head in every indoor shot).

I felt very summery, in my dress and suede!
Yes, that's my Smoking Lily silk dress, being worn as a blouse (it made a nice slip under the suede skirt). I last wore it here.

I've had the skirt for less than a year; I bought it in November 2011 (here) at the WIN (Women in Need) thrift boutique for $24.50. I also wore it here in January 2012. I like leather all year 'round - it's natural and very breathable. It's a lot cooler than the fake stuff!
The skirt is a little big on me, so I wore it low on my hips with another of Mom's "liberated" items: this gold chain belt from the 60s/70s. It used to have gold swags and tassels on it - it was quite a show piece. Unfortunately, I "edited" it back in the 80s. I wish I'd kept it intact, but oh well. Things are meant to be worn and loved, right?

I also wore another one of Megan's buttonflowers:
So cute, Megan! Thank you again!

Another fresh pair of shoes (I think this is all 7 pairs now):
My chunky blue ring has been claimed by Lesley when I'm tired of it
I stow these away for spring/summer wear only, so I last wore them here (2nd outfit) in August 2011. I originally got them at She She Shoes in January 2010 for $30.00, and first wore them here. They're by Portia, which makes very cool designs, and they are leather. Please note that the back of the heel is yellow, with a strip of yellow patent right down to the ground. Is that cool or what?

I've also worn them here (April 2011), here (July 2010), here (June 2010, 2nd outfit), and here (April 2010).

*Remember, I link because I love - no money or goods are changing hands. I think Mary's cool and very talented, and she was kind enough to send me a gift. That deserves a shout-out!

Dress (Smoking Lily, thrifted), skirt (Co & Eddy, thrifted), shoes (Portia), belt (Mom's, vintage 60s/70s), ring (Le Chateau), buttonflower (Megan Mae).

  1. More fantastic shoes!!! What a great color. I love Mary's illustrations. I was following her Drawings-a-day blog too. Then she started following us! It takes a ton of dedication to draw daily like that.

  2. Yes, Mary's drawing is so cool - like you've been featured in Lucky Magazine! Love your SL dress as a blouse, and those shoes are yummy - and I'll bet they "go" with a ton of outfits too.

  3. How cool is that drawing! Mary's drawings are so fabulous. I'm still tickled that you have your Doodle up in all your photos.

I've been reading recently that suede is intended as a spring/summer fabric. This has blown my mind! Maybe it's because I live somewhere humid, but other than leather accessories I can't wear any of my leather goods until there's a nip in the air.

Also that buttonflower is a lemon! My MIL had some fabric leftover from making a citrus print shirt and I cut out lemons, limes, and oranges to transform into some mini flowers.

      Hee, I love that it's a lemon.

  5. Wow - you look super skinny! Beautiful woman, you are. Love the orangey skirt and the colorful top. I've always been a color girl, but every morning lately, I pull out solids . . . maybe I'll schedule a month of solids, too, so I can get back to my normal color-drenched self!

  6. I like your dress as a blouse. This pairing really works well. The yellow of Megan's fabulous pin is perfect.

  7. I love all of this! Your skirt reminds me of a J. Crew yellow leather skirt that's currently retailing for more than $580. I also love to wear skirts resting right on my hip bones.

Your MMD button flower is a clever mix with the blouse pattern, and if we wore the same shoe size and I was at your house, I'd probably try to steal them :D

  8. I like that the dress is doing double duty! You've really got me thinking. I have a suede skirt and I've never even considered wearing it in the summer, but why not?

    1. Exactly! Why not? Suede (and most leather) actually breathes beautifully.

  10. I love how you wear orange so well! :)

That skirt is beautiful, I'm amazed you can wear it in warm weather - we get really high humidity with the heat here too though.

  11. Thanks for the linky lovins. After seeing your amazing outfit the skirt (love the way the cut hugs) and shoes (color and style) I came down to comment and saw super support for my drawing, how great is that?

I never considered any outfit off limits for a season beyond comfort. Obviously no bikinis while building snowmen (although I'm pretty sure Playboy may have done photos like that) and no eskimo jackets on the beach in the summer. A girl's gotta draw a line somewhere.

    1. Your drawing is awesome, Mary! I hope you got lots of new fans from this! thank you again!

I do put away some very light fabrics, or pieces that are too seasonal for winter. Same with shoes; if they are very strappy, they tend not to work for colder/wetter weather.

  12. Great shoes! I've never heard of the brand Portia before. They go perfectly with the skirt.

I wore a button flower yesterday too. =)

  15. Very creative to wear a skirt with a dress. Another new idea to add to my list of 'blogger inspiration.' Beautiful color combo and loved the drawing. Thanks for the intro to a new blog for me.

  16. Warm weather, but it does cool off so beautifully in the evening. I am in love with the last two dresses you have worn, Sheila. Your comment on real leather being breathable - true, but something I had forgotten. Love the skirt, shoes, dress combo. Peg
