Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Vintage Shop Puzzle, Josephine in Golden Lions

Welcome back, my friends! I crammed all of my weekend activity into one day, and I'm exhausted (in a good way).

Saturday morning found me up early, dyeing my hair lavender again, and getting dressed to meet up with Yvonne for another vintage pop-up at Lazy Susan's (link here, and also to Vintage Fair Victoria here, 'cause I love, as always)
Shopping and adventures, ahoy!

  • Puzzle dress - vintage, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit), in November 2021 for brunch
  • Shoes - Enneagram Individualist, Fluevog; last worn here (3rd outfit) in July for the Backyard Weekender concert

We're still experiencing hot temperatures into the mid-20s, even halfway through October!
No need for a coat.

This dress had tons of admirers throughout my walk down Oak Bay Avenue and shopping with Yvonne.
I had my picture taken at the vintage pop-up a couple of times.

This dress is a floaty polyester - I was warm in it!
I have nylons on, but they kept sliding down - so annoying!

Masked up:
We're now having air quality issues from wildfires - it's all hazy sunny skies.

Incognito.
Many folks and regulars at the vintage fair recognized me anyway.

The stuff:
These shoes also had many fans - they were great for walking both ways, and shopping for close to four hours, but I was very happy to get them off at the end of our marathon shop.

  • Purse - Danier Leather, thrifted
  • Belt - Rohesia Belt, Fluevog; last seen here
  • Mask (not shown) - by Mom

I carried two shopping bags in my purse, and filled both of them.

Minimal bling:
A few people gasped over the belt.
  • Gold/amethyst ring - Frances Jewelers, c. 1965, Dad's
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Earrings - can't remember

It's so nice to be around fellow fashion-lovers!

I left a little early to meet up with Yvonne, as she had morning plans, so I popped into Good Things Consignment Vintage (link here) and had a quick poke around.
I found some goodies for my upcoming party - the set of three small plates was $3.00, and the two sets of silicon skull coasters were $3.00 apiece.

I also bought this silver ring for $45.00.
I'll be wearing it on my thumb. I have skinny fingers - I find it really hard to find rings that are small enough.

It's stamped .925 for Sterling silver, as well as "India YS."
The stone is green onyx.

I also found these vintage deerskin suede gloves for $20.00.
They're from the 1940s!

Aren't they lovely?
Long gloves are useful for capes and shorter sleeved sweaters, for when we eventually have colder weather.

After that nice little haul, I strolled down the block to House of Savoy (link here) for a thorough browse.
This gorgeous brass choker caught my eye.

It fits perfectly.
I think it's also made in India. It was $40.50 with a very kind "stylist" discount from Emilie.

This amazing coat called to me.
It's a gorgeous blend of black, brown and orange.

Look at that pattern.
It's all lined up symmetrically too!

Yes, Ann, I found another piece of Welsh woven outerwear - I'm starting to have a collection!
This is the Eclipse pattern. This coat is likely from the 1960s, and was a bit of a splurge at $157.50 (including 10% discount), but consider that I paid $13.00 for my Welsh woven poncho...it all balances out!

Fresh from my unique finds, I walked another block to Lazy Susan's where the vintage pop-up fair was in full swing. Yvonne had just arrived, and we had a whirlwind look around.
I found a pair of Trasparenze tights for $5.00 (they are normally over $20 a pair), and a vintage land-line telephone for $40.00.

As L and I still have a land-line, we plugged it in right away!
So cool!

Inside Lazy Susan's I bought a set of four vintage matchbooks for $7.00.
I remember Louie Louie's Diner from the late 80s/early 90s - they had half a car mounted coming out of the wall, and it was the first place I ever saw mac & cheese on a restaurant menu (a mention of it, plus more memorabilia from the owner here, scroll down).

Oh, this is awesome here - it's a vintage reel of the Seven Seas Restaurant of Edmonton, Alberta from 1961, including two women dining (in hats!) on far too much food for two people.

And...the Hobnob Cafe from Lincoln, Nebraska (no info on that one).
And Senor Pico - you can tell these are all so much "of their time" by the design! This is from the original Senor Pico location in San Francisco - the restaurant is still in existence (here) - and was started by the people who brought you Trader Vic's, a famous US chain, immortalized in the Warren Zevon song, "Werewolves of London," with the lyric, "I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's; his hair was perfect."

The backs of the matchbooks. I laughed at the Hobnob's slogan: "It's different!" That would not fly nowadays!
There were a bunch of these packs - I wish I'd bought a couple more!

From the vintage fair, Yvonne and I went back to House of Savoy where she found a pair of lovely shoes and a long black merino wool cardigan - both amazing quality investment pieces.

We then crossed the Avenue to Turnabout (which is moving soon!) where we both had a thorough look around. Yvonne got another pair of shoes, a skirt and one or two other goodies.

I found this skirt and that's it - nothing was really grabbing me.
This had a matching sweater, but it was way too small.

I hadn't looked at the price, but I had my gift card from L and it was a good thing, as this was $149.99. Thanks, love!
It retailed for $475.00 new, though - and the tags were still on it, so I still got a good deal.

Yvonne and I were exhausted, but our day was not over yet! We came back to our place, and L fetched us all dinner while Yvonne and I went through our purchases. I styled her up with a mix of her new purchases and a top and some accessories from my giveaway pile, and we went to the theatre!
We joined Rosanna, Vero and Justin and saw Josephine, a cabaret-style musical and one-woman performance (link here to their site, and here to a local write-up), starring Tymeshia Harris. It was ASTOUNDING, and highly recommended if you can see it!

  • Dress - The Arkin Collection, vintage 60s, vintage fair; last worn here in December 2021
  • Shoes - Napoleoni, thrifted; last seen here in March with Boss Lady pants
  • Coat (below) - Forever 21, thrifted; last worn here in my first outfit of the Pandemic in March 2020, with this same dress!

You can see Yvonne's two giant bags of purchases and acquisitions from my giveaway pile in the hall. We took the bus up to UVic (University of Victoria), and cabbed back here after. I ran upstairs and grabbed her bags for her so that she could cab home with them.
I picked this shiny and happy dress to wear because going to the theatre - live theatre! - with my friends deserves to be celebrated!

I have worn this dress a few times, but it's all been during the pandemic.
I bought it at the last vintage fair just before the first lock-down happened.

Masked up.
I wasn't sure about taking it off in a giant theatre, but it wasn't too packed so I did.

Outerwear - I paid around $5.95 for this fluffy soft leopard cropped coat years ago.
I didn't really need it - it was quite warm in the theatre and outside, even at 9pm.

The stuff:
I needed comfy shoes after our long day - it was so good to sit at the theatre!

  • Belt - Leather World
  • Buckle - Zara, thrifted
  • Purse - Plum, c. 2000
  • Fascinator - Tierre Joline, thrifted; purchased here for $6.95
  • Brooch (on fascinator) - Karen's
  • Mask (not shown) - Lazy Susan's

Brown bling:
First wearing of the fascinator - I pinned one of Karen's brooches to it. I had to tighten up the elastic to keep it in place.
  • Copper cuff - Karen's
  • Hinged cuff - Renoir, vintage 50s, Grandma J's
  • Ring - Bell Trading Post, vintage 60s, consignment
  • Amber ring - c. 1996

I didn't realize I'd forgotten to wear earrings until the night was almost over.

Vizzini, are you ready for some cuddles? I need couch-time!
"I'm busy guarding the Man's bathrobe."

Then I'll have to chill without you!

And so...I'm off to enjoy the last of my weekend. Thank you so much for stopping by!

  1. That's a fabulous Saturday! For about 4 years now in trying to visit a pop up vintage market here, old wives market is what they named it, and every year I can't because of other obligations. I really need to set that date in my calendar. That coat is a- mazing!! Wow, I love it. And your outfit for the theatre! Such a fab dress!

  2. What a smashing day. I remember the original puzzle dress and much prefer it at the length you shortened it to. The Welsh Wool coat is lovely. I'm sure I've told you about my friend Tina who has an entire room in her house containing her Welsh Wool archive - you've never seen so many coats, capes, pinafore dresses, suits, hats, purses and handbags. Obviously it's not that hard to find here being 80 miles from the border!
The matchbooks are great, loving the graphics. We've got two 1960s rotary dial phones in daily use, too.
The theatre outfit is perfect, right down to your headpiece. xxx

  3. Stunning, stunning, stunning. Did I mention you looked stunning and both outfits are stunning? The purple belt (please tell me it IS purple and not a dark blue! Okay, maybe don’t tell me, that way I can think of it as a lush purple. :)) is fabulous and a perfect coupling with the dress. I followed the link to the prior wear of the dress and, hands down, this current look is what grabs my attention and evoked “stunning.”

Your outfit for the theatre…oh my, simply lovely, cool and classy, and I never noticed you didn’t have earrings on. This is one of my (many) favorite dresses of yours. The colors and sheen goes right to my “I would wear that” heart and you wear it with panache.

I admire your stamina for a double dipping kind of a Saturday! Capping it off with live theatre with friends…I know that amazing feeling of returning to live performances from when I took my Granddaughter to the ballet this summer.

You scored some wonderful hauls…the black & white skirt, the phone, the coat and the ring!

I am certain your Sunday was filled with much R&R!

    Cheers, Laurie

  4. Temperatures into the mid-twenties are very warm indeed for this time of year - we've got about 20°C at the utmost - but those wildfires do sound nasty.
I'm not surprised people were taking your photo. That dress is simply amazing and both your newly lavendered hair and those gorgeous shoes compliment it perfectly.
You found some great stuff, and I simply cannot get my head around the fact that you found yet another Welsh wool item. That coat is fantastic - lucky you!
Loving the shiny happy theatre going dress too. Sounds like you had a perfect - if tiring - day! xxx

  5. What a mammoth shop that was! I adore those 1940s gloves; the jewellery and I loved the striped skirt and the Welsh wool coat. You do find some amazing things. The match books were so cute and the silver telephone looked perfect in your home; very classy!

Loved the puzzle dress but the theatre outfit was spectacular - what a beautiful outfit.

We had an unexpectedly warm day today - 19 degrees with sunshine!

    Have a great week

  7. The colourful dress is beautiful, it really is, but somehow it is not so much you. The brown/golden dress is more you.
The black and white skirt is to die for.

  9. You fit so much into one day, wow! I love that you got a lot of friend time and some shopping time in, sounds like a busy but perfect day, and you wore two such beautiful dresses too! I really like that first one, I can see why you got so many compliments wearing it!

  10. Hoorah for the lavender hair! You look fabulous; no wonder people took your photo. Both the puzzle dress and the metallic one are superb. It sounds like you had a brilliant day.

I laughed when I saw your quote from 'Werewolves Of London' – exactly the same line prompted me to serve pina coladas this Halloween! Those matchbooks are such fun.
