Mom-Day Adventure: Elk Lake in Pink Punk, and a Tiny Shop

Mom-Day Adventures return! Mom and I went back to Elk Lake (last visited here in May) for a walk, followed by lunch at Floyd's Diner afterwards. I bussed home from there, and had a teeny-tiny shop at the WIN Boutique.

There she is!
I missed you, Mom! She says hello to you, Laurie, and thanks you for always "talking" to her in your comments.

I like wearing either a dress or a longer skirt for our adventures in the wild. I've had this skirt for ages, but I'm still drawn to it.
Add a few other favourites - every piece is remixed from my closet! - and I'm in one of my favourite lanes: punk.

  • Sweater - Nor, consignment; last seen here (3rd outfit) in September with a leather mini
  • Turtleneck - Jacob, thrifted; last worn here in April layered under teal
  • Skirt - H&M, consignment; last seen here in December 2021 with yesterday's leather tee and these same shoes!
  • Shoes - Zara, consignment; last worn here in March with green stripes
  • Moto jacket (below) - Only, consignment; last seen here in September

I've worn this sweater/skirt combo before, here (2nd outfit) in December 2018.
I think 4 years between wearing them together is a long enough gap! I almost wore my Ringmaster coat too, same as back then.

This skirt has dallied with the giveaway pile, but it was a Regret-Me-Not when I missed its presence.
I love the spiky-looking paisley pattern. There is a bit of steely grey-blue in it, so I often mix grey and steel-blue with the skirt.

Outerwear - it was sunny, cloudy and foggy.
I went from unzipped...

To fully zipped.
"Two for lunch, please!"

I even needed the gloves. Brr!
I had a few comments on my colours, and the server at Floyd's Diner recognized Mom and I from the last time we were in.

Accoutrements:
Spooky skulls and black cats!

  • Scarf - Metrowear, San Francisco, 2006
  • Purse - Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac, thrifted
  • Gloves - vintage, thrifted
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
These were good shoes for walking - and I walked a lot!

Alien bling:
The necklace is looking at you! Spoooooky...

  • Leather cuff - Guess, thrifted
  • Leather/brass cuff - Rimanchik, thrifted
  • Spider ring - gift from Mom & Dad, c. 1986
  • Snake ring - BC Museum gift shop, c. 1986
  • Earrings - Glee
  • Necklace - All Saints, pass-along from Dominique

I wear my snake and spider rings pretty regularly this time of year. I've had them since I was 18-19 years old!

Here's Mom!
She's wearing her pink striped top (a thrifted gift from me), a reversible grey/black cardigan (gift from me) and some great new jeans. Love the dark wash, Mom!

We drove out to the Elk Lake side of Elk-Beaver Lake Park and started our walk.
It was a shock to see the lake's water so low - take a look at the same scene in May here

My favourite bench.
The water looked a bit misty.

Looking across to where Elk Lake joins up to Beaver Lake.
See the island in the distance?

Here it is, lurking in the mist.
I also see some crows or ravens circling.

As always when in trees, I look up.
Not much greenery now.

Just touches of colour.
The light was erratic, as the sun shot through the clouds here and there.

The sexy trees.
Get a room, you two!

More frisky trees.
That fern is getting downright inappropriate.

I liked how the sun hit these ferns.
Pretty!

Spiderwebs.
Unlike the last visit here, we were not plagued by bugs.

The giant stump.
Mom for scale.

A gorgeous cedar.
Very dry. We had a light sprinkle of rain this morning.

Not enough to make much difference.
The maple trees are just starting to turn.

Looking through to the lake.
We could hear Canada geese honking away.

A lovely tunnel ahead under the boughs.
We saw a few people and some very large dogs.

A glimpse of water through this maple.
Ah, those yellows!

Looking across at the highway.
We could hear the traffic at times.

Turning to catch Mom in a laugh.
Ready to turn around and have lunch? Me too!

This ginormous fuzzy caterpillar was crossing the path at a very rapid rate. Mom toed the leaf into the shot "to add visual interest."
According to the interwebz, this is a Wooly Bear Caterpillar (which will turn into an Isabella Tiger Moth), which supposedly forecasts how severe winter will be. The bigger the rusty-brown sections, the milder the winter. If there's more black, then prepare for a hard one. Check it out here (link 'cause I love). A mild winter would be fine by me!

Another peek at the lake.
There were a few paddlers and kayakers on the water.

I liked how the red was taking over these leaves.
Leaf drama!

"Classic Autumn," said Mom.
More rich yellows.

We're nearly done.
We were getting hungry!

And here we are, back at the picnic area.
Mostly deserted.

Mom and I found it funny that we both wore pink today.
I can see my reflection in the glass behind Mom.

One more mom-daughter selfie before I go catch the bus.
Thanks so much for such a wonderful day, Mom! I love you!

As I mentioned, I popped into the Women In Need (WIN) Boutique on the way home.
A pair of black tights for $3.95 (they retail for $18.00!).

This t-shirt appealed to me.
Duh, it has a skull on it. I'm a sucker for skulls.

It says, "I'll sleep when I'm dead," which is something L always used to say.
I believe that's the New York skyline inside Figure 4.

It's by John Galt, Los Angeles, and was a mere $6.95, new with tags ("NWT!").
Apparently John Galt is a tween brand (about it here), and that 23 is likely the original price of $23.00 US.

I snorted out loud at "One Size." Who does that with t-shirts?
I'm glad my money went back to a local business. The tee itself seems pretty good quality - I like that it's made in the US. I'll likely sleep in it.

This purple dress caught my eye.
"Oh, another sleeping blanket. Put it on the bed and let me test it!"

The back. It's a deep purple, which never photographs right.
A snazzy gold zipper!

I know this brand! It's Chloe Angus - I have these leggings by her, that I paid $31.60 for new, on for more than 50% off (regular $79.00).
This is the same fabric, a gorgeous thick bamboo rayon/cotton blend. Made in Canada! That doesn't come cheap!

I found one picture of someone wearing this dress in black from 2015 so it's likely from around then.
At $11.95, I recognize a good deal - this would easily have retailed for $200.00. It is all thick fleece inside, so it'll be a house-dress for me this fall/winter, nice and cozy.

As I walked home from WIN, I could feel the air getting colder. It seemed like the clouds were sinking down to earth.
This was my view of the Castle at 3:30pm. We're definitely in for some real weather!

Vizzini, are you happy to see me?
"I'd be happier if you put food in my bowl, Woman."

That can be arranged.
"Excellent."

Aw, what a pretty boy!

And now, my friends, I'm off for the weekend. I'll be back on Sunday with tales of adventure! Thank you all so much for dropping by!

  1. Hi Helen and Sheila! Before even reaching the point in this post where it was mentioned, the very first thing I noticed was how the stripes of Helen’s shirt and Sheila’s glasses and jacket all matched. Mother-daughter style karma. :) Then I read your Hello, Helen, and smiled about as wide as possible. You might appreciate that I have recommended walking sticks, like the ones you have, to a few people who have mentioned they could use a stabilizing hand every now and then.

Yikes on the low water level of the lake. Here’s hoping the fall rains will refill it sufficiently. Robin has been enjoying gobs of sunshine in Olympia though I noticed the forecast will be bringing much needed rain.

Nice finds on your wee shop. :) Helen, do you have any painting or sketching projects lined up? And Sheila, I *think* that you have begun the project for L (the design?) This time of year often gets me thinking of creative projects.

Here’s to a wonderful weekend for all!
Cheers from New York and what is forecast to be a cool Autumn sunny day,
    Laurie

    1. Mom's been working on some older paintings, getting them ready for a show - we'll be picking them up next week, so I'll take some pics so you can see, Laurie! She will be tickled that her walking poles have inspired others, thank you!

Yes, I'm still working on L's Blue Oyster Cult Jacket, but I'm kind of stuck. I may start working on a smaller project for myself just to get my mojo going - the last two projects I did were for other people, so I need the artistic freedom!

    2. Ah, thoroughly understand artistic freedom. May have mentioned this once before (?) but for many years Fred made 3D light sculptures. They were exhibited at a local gallery and long story short he wound up making a sculpture for someone else, which went well. But there was a second opportunity with someone else and he did not like the process (and they both bowed out amicably.) He didn’t like the constraints placed upon him when designing for someone else.

Looking forward to seeing your Mom’s paintings!

  2. Isn't it lovely that you were both in pink. Gerben and I often wear the same colours without knowing from each other what we were planning to wear on forehand. I make him change then, because as a couple.....bleh. Those shoes are super cool! Have a fabulous weekend.

  3. What a joy it was to tag along on your Autumnal walk! Loving the frisky trees and your encounter with the Wooly Bear Caterpillar, but what a shame about the low water levels. I do hope they'll get a top up soon.
Your pink punk outfit is gorgeous, I'm so glad the skirt turned out to be a regret-me-not. Your alien necklace is quite creepy, particularly if you look in in the eye(s).
Your Mom's outfit is gorgeous as well, so funny that you were both wearing pink.
Oh, and Bess says hi to Vizzini. She's right here next to me and I'm having a hard time keeping her away from my keyboard :-) xxx

  4. Nature is so exotic. Can you imagine creating all of this? I cannot. Love that purple dress it is right up my ally.

Your walk looks beautiful- all the colours! I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees bodies in trees!!

Your pink outfit is very pleasing! Kezzie x

  9. I love the matching pink! And I like that you grabbed that skirt back out the pile, it is so nice on you and it does work well with grey! And I love the bag of course - still haven't worn mine with being so sick, but it's on my desk and I'm admiring it now!
I smiled at the graphic tee saying! I remember I used to buy magazines as a kid that would come with "one size fits all" giveaway things on them. But of course I never wore them more than once as they never really fit right!

Hope the caterpillar is right and it is a mild winter for you.

  10. Yay, Mum's Day! Loving your unconsciously coordinated pink outfits and the gloriously Autumnal colours of your surroundings. The woolly bear caterpillar is the cutest thing ever (apart from Vizzini, of course!) and those trees are incredibly imposing.
Have a wonderful weekend, my lovely friend. xxx

  11. What a lovely day out with your mom. I love your pink outfit. Vizzini looks as handsome as ever. Here in the UK it's approaching Rufus' dinner time, I'm expecting him to come and stand beside me soon and give me "that look" !!

  12. Sounds a wonderful day with your Mum. The scenery is so pretty with the Autumn colours. You both wear pink so well and I did like your punk outfit.
Hope you are having a great weekend.

  13. I haven't seen one of those woolly bear caterpillars for years. I used to see them all the time when I was a kid, but we lived in a small town so there were more "wild" places for them to hang out. Vizzini looks ever so handsome!
