Fancy Friday: Red Ruffled Jammy Dress, and a Wee Thrift Shop

Happy Friday, my friends! These short weeks (this past Monday being a holiday in Canada) always kill me - why do they feel so long?

This outfit was my alternate choice to wear for my big company meeting last night, but since there are still some colleagues in town in the office, I thought I'd wear it today.
So much red! I had oodles of comments on this look.

  • Dress - Little Moon, consignment; last seen here in November 2021 with leopard accents
  • Shoes - Makena Truths, Fluevog; last worn here in September 2021 for a Mental Health shop

This is a total Jammy Dress - it does all the work.
Just add shoes and accessories and go!

I love the ruffles down the front.
I can handle this level of ruffling.

The front and back lower panels are pleated.
The dress has a lot of movement, but it's not bulky at all.

Showing off my vintage red slip.
The dress is somewhat sheer, plus the mornings and evenings are chilly right now.

Masked up:
And showing off the pockets!

Incognito. This is also my outerwear.
I see that we're supposed to have another week of glorious sunshine and temps in the low- to mid-20s. I know that these drought conditions are terrible for the trees and agriculture, but I'll take the sunny days and enjoy them.

Accoutrements:
A scarf in case my throat gets chilled. It did not - I didn't need it.

  • Scarf - La Dear, vintage 70s, thrifted
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
I don't wear these shoes as much as I used to - I was shocked that I haven't worn them in a year (although they were packed away for spring/summer).

  • Necklace/bracelets - Robert Larin, vintage 70s, vintage mall - all gifts from L
  • Earrings - vintage 70s, vintage mall
  • Square ring - vintage, thrifted
  • Poison ring - Karen's

I love having all of these pieces back in my jewelry wardrobe!

Due to working on Thursday, I only had to put in 3 hours at the office on Friday afternoon. Hmmm...what to do in the morning? A wee thrift shop, you say? What a fine idea!

I headed down to the big Women In Need (WIN) store on Pandora and spent a couple of hours browsing. Stock seemed low - they're transitioning from summer to fall, plus they had a bunch of Hallowe'en stuff out that I skimmed over.

As always, I start in the accessories section.
Red lace knee high tights! Golden Legs is a pretty cheesy name.

A little digging around on the Interwebz tells me these are from the 1980s.
They are seamed up the back, which was a dead giveaway anyway. I'll take 'em for a $1.95!

I recognized this bracelet as a Christophe Poly piece immediately. His style is very distinctive.
I have rings, bracelets and necklaces by him, but they are not in my current jewelry wardrobe - I am currently "resting" from the bulk of it, with only one or two pieces out.

I like how it looks on.
The clasp is magnetic. This was $6.95.

There were overflowing baskets of thick winter scarves, but I prefer silk ones.
This one caught my eye - it's so pretty!

It's also really long! It has no labels on it, but it's two layers of silk, with pattern on one side and a "frame" pattern on the other.
The darker dots are actually pink glitter - that alone makes me think this is from the early 00s. It was $3.95.

I had good luck with the gloves, finding a suede pair with woven paisley trim...
...and a pair with hot pink plaid and black leather palms.

Only $6.95 a pair!
Boggling!

The suede pair still had the size tag inside it.
I always look for signs like that - it means these weren't worn much, if at all.

Wool and cotton lining, and made in Czechoslovakia.
The CA number tells me the parent company was S.R. Imports of Montreal, and they're from 1992.

I scoffed when I saw this thing was tagged as Vintage.
I knew exactly what this was when I saw it.

It's a hat!
Well, a fascinator? I'm not sure what the term for this is.

But I know the person who made it, because I have three other hats by her, including two that she custom-made for me! It's Tierre Joline! She goes by Tierre Taylor now (link here 'cause I love, as always!), but when I first met her in 2011, she was using this label. Go here (scroll down) for a Flashback on my teal hat - there are links there to when I first met her and links to the other hats I have.
The two custom ones I bought in 2011 directly from her were $75.00 each. This likely retailed for around $75.00-125.00 - she sold at the Victoria Vintage Expo (both Cat and I bought hats from her), and I recall the smaller pieces like this were around that price or more. This was a major score at $6.95.

I bought this for L - it's a thick, soft, fluffy robe.
He gets pretty cold since I have to have windows open due to ongoing menopausal hot flashes. Poor man.

I liked the black/brown/grey plaid mix, and the Classy Designer name, Pierre Cardin.
I checked it very carefully, but I could barely find any wear on it - it smells like it was sitting in a closet for a few decades (it's in the wash as I type). For $8.95 I could not say no!

Okay, yes, I admit I have a plaid and/or red skirt addiction!
This beautiful woven plaid pencil skirt practically leapt into my hand!

Here's a better look at the textile.
The colours are red, brighter red, black, grey and dark green. The content tag has been removed, but it feels like a wool mix.

That's a vintage Diane Von Furstenberg! That label is characteristic of her 90s output, according to the Vintage Fashion Guild (link here).
I couldn't find anything like this online, but $9.95 is an awesome price! It's a perfect fit too - that's not an 80s size 8.

I can't resist a skull, especially a GLITTERY skull!
Ooh, sparkly!

Here's a close-up:
All little stones stuck on!

Never heard of Saints & Soldiers, but it's 100% cotton and made in Italy.
The CA number tells me that the parent company is Dress Couture of Montreal, and that this is from 2018.

Weirdly, there is almost nothing out there on this brand.
$9.95 seemed like a good deal, but a size Small? I think this might be a men's top, but it looks really cute on me.

This was the most expensive item I bought, and it was more impulsive.
I thought of my black and white sporty themes that I've been grooving on lately.

It's by Armani Exchange, and was $19.95.
It had previously been priced at $24.95. So I don't feel too bad if it doesn't work out.

Phew, there we go! What's your favourite?

Bonus! Vizzini pics!
"Go away, Woman."

No way! He never sleeps here - it's where he and I look out the window at the neighbourhood.
"Just leave."

Fine, but don't come running when you need a cuddle. Not that I can resist!

All right, my friends, I am off now to enjoy my weekend. Thank you so much for your comments, and I'm sorry that I've been so remiss in visiting your blogs/commenting, but life's been busy!

Have a fabulous weekend, and please come visit on Sunday as I share my tales of adventure with you.

  2. I like your beautiful red dress - it is such a good amount of ruffles, I can see why it got you a lot of compliments! And it's so great you were able to have such a productive shop as well! I only work half days 2 days a week, so I can pick up and drop the kids off at school, and have a little time to myself. I'd imagined I'd be opshopping and unwinding but so far it's mostly errands and nothing fun, haha! I might get into a better flow next year! I did go shopping today though - I took a photo for you, I'm going to go email you soon!

  3. The red dress was gorgeous in you. I know what you mean about short work weeks feeling long because we try packing so much into the days we work.

  4. I like that your vintage red slip has ruffles like the dress, and that the pockets on the dress seem to be camouflaged by the ruffles!

Hmm, my fav of your finds…the last top (looks very interesting to my eye and like a top I would absolutely wear), the bracelet, and the plaid gloves, all items I would wear (which is probably why I like them ;)).

Have a lovely weekend Sheila! I’ll “see” you on Sunday!

    Cheers, Laurie

  6. Your red ruffled and pleated dress definitely ranks as jammy dress supreme and it's an instant pick-me-up for both wearer and onlooker, I'm sure.
I love a wee thrift shop, especially when it yields treasures like that fabulous Christophe Poly bracelet, gorgeous pairs of gloves and that wee little hat!
Wishing you a most wonderful weekend my friend, and never mind about not visiting blogs and commenting. I know exactly how you're feeling! xxx

Loving the red dress on you, Sheila. You look an utter vision.
The bracelet is gorgeous and I'm liking the brocade trimmed gloves, too.
I'm having an epic catch-up between pub dates, eBay selling and life's general madness. Hope all's well with you. xxx

Great finds, totally admiring that plaid skirt and the Poly bracelet. But you know I have a weakness for plaid & red too!

  12. Ooh, you got some good finds there.

That bracelet is really unusual – I love it! It feels both futuristic and retro at the same time.
