Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Neon Friday; Mini Shopping Dress; Ginormous Skirt Winesday

Hello, my friends! I hope you've been having as fun a weekend as I've had!

Let's get this going with Friday's work outfit.
Casual Friday is not really a look that I do, ha ha! Bring on the neon!

This is my entry for this week's "Visible Monday" over at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style. Go, go!

  • Silk blouse - Kate Spade, thrifted; last seen here in May with zig-zags
  • Skirt - Maeve, thrifted; last worn here in September 2018 with double flares
  • Shoes - Prepare Guide, Fluevog; last seen here in June for the Day of Indolence
  • Shrug (below) - Guess Marciano, thrifted; last worn here (3rd outfit) in June 2018 over a silk sundress

It was nice having a short week, so I celebrated by wearing one of my favourite skirts - not yet worn this season, shockingly!

I've done turquoise accessories with it before, but never this bright almost-green neon shade. I loved it!

I have a camisole on under the blouse because (sigh) it's mostly sheer.
Heh, I like how muscular my calves look there. I do lots of stairs in my job!

Vizzini came by to see what I was up to while I was doing my outerwear shot. This shrug is perfect for covering up my arms from the sun.
"Oh, this again."

I grabbed him for a cuddle and a picture, but he was having none of it.
"Down! Now, Woman!"

We call this, "My cat loves me!"

The stuff:
Must wear all the turquoise! These shoes are so comfy.

Turquoise bling:
All pieces I love. The belt is butter-soft leather, and was made locally.

  • Belt - gift from L
  • Cuff - thrifted
  • Earrings - used furniture store
  • Turquoise/silver ring - local
  • Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes

I met L for dinner after work, and then we strolled home for a quiet evening of board games. Around 8pm, Vizzini goes on kitty-treat duty. He's watching me in the reflection of the glass!
"Is she getting up? I'll show her which cupboard my treats are in!"

He goes nuts the second, I get up, yowling and pointing at the cupboard where the treat bag is. No treats until 9pm!

We had a game of Ultimate Frisbee on Saturday morning, followed by brunch and a wee bit of consignment shopping for me afterwards.
Dressed to change! It was a hot day on the field, so this dress was awesome to just slip on overtop of my sweaty gear at the end of the game.

  • Cardigan - no label, thrifted; not tracked
  • Dress - Birds of Canada, consignment; last worn here in April on Easter Monday (with this same sweater!)
  • Sandals - Born, consignment; last see here during my weekend in Hamilton a week ago

I wore the cardigan for sunblock coverage.

I just hate wearing goopy sunblock.

I use a solid sunblock stick for my hands, legs, feet, ears and my face and neck.
I play Ulti with long sleeves on - it's much sweatier, but better than getting sunblock in my eyes when I start dripping.

I always find it odd how different I look without my glasses.
I have worn them since I was seven years old.

But I do look like a movie star in big shades!
I should get some prescription sunglasses, but my insurance doesn't cover them.

The stuff:
I wear soccer cleats on the field, so I need something ultra-comfy for after the game.

  • Bracelet - Butler Fifth Avenue Collection, consignment
  • Earrings - thrifted
  • Amber ring - c. 1996

I went to The Velvet Crease (link here 'cause I love) because it was close to our lunch spot. I haven't shopped much in the past month (it's been a pricey month with travel and other stuff), so I was jonesing for a good browse.

On the $15.00 rack, I found a great sleek under-top.
This will be excellent for backing up my sheer tops. It's by Chico's.

I also found this crazy metallic black sweater.
I know it looks sort of plummy-coloured there, but it's black.

It has blue, pink and yellow "confetti" woven in the fabric.
It's by Divided by H&M. I like the fun shape of it.

I loved the cut and fit of this bright orange woven skirt.
It's a mini, and has two little pockets in front of the clips above.

It's by Mexx Metropolitan, and was $20.00, including 20% off.
 It's a thick polyester/viscose blend.

I loved the feel and flow of this silk over-blouse.
The edges are brown, fading to cream, then fading to yellow.

Bigass sleeves!
It's cut like a shrug, so no extra fabric in the front.

It's by Nancymac (link here, I'd never heard of them, but they seem to carry a lot of these silk kimono shrugs)
These silk shrugs run around 139 Euros, which is just over $200 Canadian, so I guess the $40 I paid was not too bad!

I have tried this gown on before and then put it back. It fits me perfectly and I love it, but I felt that $63.00 was too high, plus it has a very low back, which makes undergarments tricky.
 It's a floaty, bias-cut floor-length gown - much swooshing in this!

It's woven with these silver, bronze, copper and criss-cross designs of roses.
So pretty! The pattern has a shine to it, and the background black is a smoother, matte weave.

The back is much spaghetti-strappage, and dips down below the bra-line.
I'm just going to wear one of my skimpier black lace bras and expose it. F**k it! Ha!

It's by Simon Chang.
And this time around, it was $31.50 - that's a price I was willing to pay!

I have also seen and tried this leather jacket on before. It was also WAY too expensive for my thrifting blood, but when I looked it up at home after seeing it before, I gulped and said to myself, "If it's still there, I'm buying it!"
This jacket is a work of art! It was $185.00 and is one of the more expensive second-hand things I've ever bought (my Burberry leather jacket was $220).

Let's take a closer look at it. It's covered in bronze safety pins, for one thing.
Shoulders, top of pocket, zipper pull. The zipper unzips from both the top and bottom of the zip.

It's by Gianfranco Ferre, and was made in Italy. If you aren't familiar with him, he designed for Dior in 1989, prior to John Galliano. Info about him here, from the New York Times obituary of 2007.
There's the inspector tag, found in the pocket! The safety pins were likely manufactured specially for this garment.

The pins continue over the shoulders.
The back seams are held together by the safety pins - I wish there wasn't that gap at the top, but it's not noticeable when the jacket is on. The sleeves are very long and also have zips.

All of the tags are still inside.
 No washing at all!

It's buffalo leather (!). I like seeing all this information.
It helps authenticate it, but I don't really need that extra, since I found the runway show that this is from!

This is a screenshot from Vogue's slideshow of the Spring 2003 Ready-to-Wear fashion show, here (it's slide #43). My jacket is "lifetime" - it was made prior to the designer's death in 2007.
I like seeing how it's meant to be styled, although I will be skipping the belly button exposure. There's a matching skirt - wouldn't that be amazing to find!?

Oh, and the original price was $5,500 - and a quick peek over at 1stdibs or farfetch (not linking, look 'em up) reveals that leather jackets by him still sell for between $1-3K. So, $185 seems not so bad!

Flush with my shopping bonanzas, I had a nap before getting dressed for Winesday at Linda's.
We had an unofficial "ginormous skirt" theme, so I wore my biggest skirt!

  • Top - Twik, thrifted; purchased here for $6.95
  • Skirt - A Tribute to Marimekko by H&M, thrifted; last worn here in September 2018 for a casual Friday
  • Shoes - Softmocs, thrifted; last worn here (6th outfit) in June for groceries
  • Jacket (below) - Gap, consignment; last seen here in June

I loved sleeveless mock turtleneck sweaters back in the 90s, and I still do! They are great basics for helping ground a more flamboyant item.
 This skirt is plenty flamboyant!

It's huge!
It's practically got its own weather system.

And it's very swooshy - the fabric is a very thin cotton.
 And it has pockets.
 That's really the best part.

I walked to Linda's by myself in the sun in my bright pinks and oranges.
And walked home at 12:30am with Karen and Cat. What a lovely evening, spent with my besties!

The stuff:
I scuffed the toe walking home. Dang! I have since touched it up with a felt pen (klassy!) and it's good enough. These shoes are wearing out quickly, though - the heels are nearly shot.

Silver bling:
I loved how my "alien" necklace looked with this outfit. It's looking at you...

  • Necklace - All Saints, gift from Dominique
  • Earrings - Brenda Schoenfeld, 1992, vintage mall
  • Silver/red stone ring - vintage mall
  • Silver/crystal ring - Soul Flower

Vizzini was trying to keep me from leaving the house by sleeping on my shopping bag.
"The Woman will never figure out my fiendish plot!"

Fortunately, I have multiple shopping bags. You can't fool me, Vizzini!
"Curses. Well, I guess I'll go back to sleep."

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Thank you so much for stopping by!

  5. The saftey pin leather jacket is such a find! What a great piece! I love the kimono / shrug too, and of course I'm really liking your maxi skirt outfit! I've been embracing my maxi skirts and dresses so much since I got back from Europe - partly because it's warmer than it was there even though it's the middle of winter, haha! But also just because I love them :)

  10. You know I love that Marimekko for H&M skirt. It's all kinds of gorgeous. The Chinese brocade dress is adorable on you and the colours in your Friday outfit make my heart sing.
That jacket is amazing & the find of the year but I have real trouble with that label. Years ago we visited an outlet village, went into the Gianfranco Ferre shop and I picked up a dress only for the biggest frigging spider in the world to crawl across it - I screamed in horror, threw the dress to the floor and caused absolute panic in the shop. Every time I see that label I still shudder at the thought of the eight-legged freak!
Love Vizzini's tactic to keep you at home longer, they're crafty our kittens! xxx

Oh no, what a terrible association to have with Ferre! OMG, that would traumatize me for life!

Hee, they are so crafty! Always plotting against us!

  11. All the turquoise thrills me- I love it!
And wow look at that leather jacket! I love anything made in Italy, and what a great detail the bronze safety pins are. It would be so amazing to find the matching skirt. You never know, it could happen!
Vizzini is too cute trying to sleep on your shopping bag. Haha. X

    1. Thank you, Jess - that's one of my "sets" that I love to wear.

I know, isn't it amazing? The safety pins really make it. Gawd, I would LOVE to find the skirt, but it would be really hard to find, I think. They don't make very many of these, even though they are "ready to wear". I will keep my eye out!

I know, what a little goofball he is. :)

  12. First off, I love the bold colours in the outfits you're wearing in this post. The Birds dress is a favourite of mine. Now, the jacket - WOW, what a score. I see Gianfranco Ferre leather jackets at the vintage shows in New York, and even second hand they are priced at close to $1000. The safety pin embellishment is very cool - definitely a statement, and investment, piece.
