Two-Fer: Spring Flannel Plaid and Green, and Space Book Club

I am off to Book Club at Yvonne's shortly - it's been another lovely hot day, so I am looking forward to the walk. I'm also 'fessing up to the temps: my deck is glassed in and the thermometer was in the sun - good job, Ann, on spotting that. Our temps yesterday only hit 21 degrees, but that's still 10 degrees higher than our average for this time of year.

Hee hee, I would have gotten away with it if not for those meddling kids!*
*Scooby-Doo reference, and I am silly
I didn't feel as good wearing this outfit all day as I look in the pictures. Sometimes photos lie, but this is one time I feel like they make me look better than I was. I guess that's the magic of them!

  • Blazer - TopShop, thrifted; purchased here for $21.95
  • Sweater (underneath) - Gap, thrifted; last worn here in March 2018 with crystal culottes
  • Skirt - Pink Tartan, thrifted; last seen here in January with a tiger on my shoulder
  • Booties - London; last worn here in January with unexpected legs
  • Leather coat (below) - Danier Leather; last seen here in February

I felt iffy on the blazer - it's a thin flannel with a ripple on the black. I thought it was just really wrinkly until I tried to steam it out last night!
I do really like the way that the plaid is sewn, and how the neck drapes, and the overall cut is really cool.

It has great detail on the back as well - pretty nice quality (although it's not lined at all).
There is a green stripe in it that's not really visible in photos - a slightly better look here.

There are pockets, but they are kind of awkwardly placed.
Handy for paperclips and sticky notes.

Coated - it's still chilly in the morning.
I wore it open and got rather glowy on my walk home!

The stuff:
These heels are rather high, but it was a pretty quiet day. These booties get packed away for the season - I prefer wearing them with tights or nylons, like I did today.

Matchy bling:
Some of my slight dissatisfaction is from the red/green colour combo. I worked in a year-round Christmas store (really) for 11 years, from 1986 to 1997 (really! check out my Christmas stuff, here, here and here and I recommend you embiggen the photos if you can to truly take that in), so I'm somewhat averse to spot-on holiday colours.

  • Bracelet - thrifted
  • Klimt ring - consignment
  • Jade/brass ring - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Gold hoops - 5th anniversary gift from L

So, I'm not wearing the above outfit to Book Club, so I changed. Here's a casual look for sitting around eating delicious food and drinking wine with my literary ladies.
All comfy stuff - once I decided to wear these silver trousers, I had to do the glittery top, and that led to the Star Wars shoes. Space!

  • Cardigan - Ports, vintage 80s, consignment; last seen here in January in two different outfits in one day (how unusual)
  • Sparkle tee - Ted Baker, thrifted; first worn here in November 2018 with grey and leopard
  • Pants - H&M, consignment; last seen here (2nd outfit) in January for brunch
  • Shoes - Star Wars collection, Irregular Choice; last worn here in December 2019 with some Friday armour

The cardi can be tossed on a chair if I get too warm, and because it's wool, it'll be warm enough to walk home in buttoned up.
 I love the vibrant blue!

This is one of my best finds, just for sheer quality.
I always give it a good steam before wearing, as it's kept folded.

All casual and ready to chat books. We read "Asymmetry" by Lisa Halliday, which was Karen's pick.
I liked the first section the best, and enjoyed it overall. It felt a bit like an exercise in writing. Our next pick will be Mindy's. We rotate the person who picks the book, they buy all of the copies, and present it to us as a surprise when we meet. It's actually a great way to pick books - we have been picking like this for over 10 years. I'm up soon...whatever shall my next book be? Any recommendations from you readers out there?

The stuff:
Good shoes for walking - I don't wear these enough.

Silver bling:
"Discuss the book we shall."
"No! I forgot to read it!"
"Idiot, you are."

  • Crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
  • White gold hoops - Frances Jewelers, 10th anniversary gift from L

  1. 21 degrees is still pretty good! We're set to see the heady heights of 15 degrees today, a day of gardening, I think!
Love your Toppers jacket, the print is aligned really well for something modern even if the pockets are in an odd place.
Jon says to tell you he loves your Star wars shoes! The silver trousers are just wonderful and I'd steal that jade bangle off you in a heartbeat.
A year-round Xmas shop? You're a brave woman, Sheila! xxx

    1. It is! We're back down to normal now, close to your temps.

Agreed, I feel the jacket is a good one. Thank you, Jon! Wait till you see my Luke and Leia ones!

It was an interesting time in my life, that's for sure, Vix.

  2. We're also having warm temperaturas these days, 20ºC (but it was 2ºc this morning, spring is a high fluctuations season!).
I've enjoyed reading about your previous job, which was something really interesting. Anyway, I understand you don't like a Green&Red combo! ;D. But your jacket is stunning and love it with the pencil skirt and booties.
I'm loving your Star Wars shoes and the fab blue cardigan, it's such an stunning ensemble, comfy&cool rocks!
    besos

    1. Such a funny season for weather, isn't it? Thank you for reading that - it's an odd part of who I am.

      Thanks, m'dear!

    1. They do! Thanks, Lorena - I liked it more the longer I wore it.

  4. Book recommendations: All Systems Red by Martha Wells - this is a series but the first one stands along just fine, Saga by Brian K. Vaughan if you're up for a graphic novel, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch - read this for my own book club recently and even the non-scifi readers liked it.

I feel another wear or two for the blazer coming, but if you're iffy I'm sure it won't last long.

    1. Ah, good, books! Thanks, Charlotte - I'll check those out. I have read the first 5 or 6 of Saga - I own them all.

Hee, you know me so well, and you are probably right. : )

  5. Haha, well I'm glad to have my suspicions confirmed. Anyway, I think 19-21°C is still pretty good for March. Better make the most of it. I do love your skirt and blazer, but I can see what you mean about it having a bit of a Christmas vibe. I have a dress which always reminds me of Christmas, so I hardly ever wear it during the year. I can't get over the fact that you've worked in a Christmas shop for *gasp* 11 years! Loved your essay, by the way. Your spacy outfit for book club is totally fabulous! xxx P.S. What, no Vizzini?

    1. You're on the ball, Ann! It is still good for March, and it's cooled off substantially. Those seasonal-looking things are so tricky, aren't they?

Yes, I really did - it was an odd part of my past. Thank you! Vizzini will be in today's post!

  6. The Top Shop jacket is fab but I understand what you mean by the Christmas vibe...how on earth did you cope with 11 years of Christmas? You deserve a medal!

I loved your Space outfit; those shoes are simply wonderful and the Klimt ring is gorgeous!

I could recommend a book - one that leaps out is a recent read; 'Oliver, Loving'. It's about the victim of a high school shooting and its effect on all the members of his family and one or two others. It's beautifully written and is even funny in places despite the sad situation. I really enjoyed it and it could invite a lot of discussion including the final decision the family had to take.

    1. Vronni, I cannot stand Christmas music AT ALL anymore. I did enjoy that job overall, though. The essay explains it a bit (the first "really").

Thank you for the recommendation - I know you read a lot. Wow, that sounds very powerful.

  7. That blue wool cardi is gorgeous! Loving the silver pants, too! I can't wait for it to be a bit warmer already!

  8. Haha, you dressed as R2D2 with those colours for that second outfit! You just needed a round red necklace to complete the look- the shoes are gorgeous!
I do like the first outfit but I prefer the second- the plaid coat looks super cosy and cute!

  9. How lovely to be in a book club!

I like biographies and autobiographies about old bands but I'm not sure if your group of girlfriends are into that.

What are you thinking of picking for the next book? X

    1. Yes, we read everything, Jess! It makes it nice that we're each able to pick books that appeal to US, rather than having to factor in everyone else's tastes (although we do consider it). I don't know what I'll pick - hence, asking for suggestions. :)

  10. Book club - what a wonderful social thing. I should look into that for here. And the clothes, as always, outta the park. I have a special weakness for those silver pants! The weather has been spectacular. At least I could get out a bit to enjoy it. Let's hope it keeps up for a while!

    1. I love my book club - we really get into the meaty parts of discussing the books, too, unlike many book clubs that are just an excuse to drink. :)

Aw, thank you! I love the silver pants. I'm hoping we are in for a nice spring!

  11. Hello dear friend. I must admit that the jacket is not among my favorites. I love the fact that it has pockets, but something about it is just awkward. Whereas that stellar metallic silver outfit that you wore to book club is simply amazing.
Enjoy the warmth.. exaggerated or not!

    1. Hello, Elle! Thank you for providing your honest opinion - I tend to agree with you on the jacket, but I still like it enough to maybe try another wearing of it next fall.

  12. You have been having much warmer temperatures out there then we have. Our highest has been around 8 or 9 degrees. I hope we get Spring first before jumping right into summer. I tried joining a book club once but the other women seemed more interested in talking about their kids than the actual book, so it was not the right fit for me.

That long cardigan is a beautiful colour, and looks fab with the silver pants (I'll be wearing mine soon).

    1. It was a weird little period of really hot weather! We are back to normal now, though.

Ugh, that sounds like a bad book club.

Woo, we'll be matching in our silver pants!
