Try Again Tuesday: Brolly Skirt

Nothing like a long weekend to make you really want...another long weekend! I wish!
August is the dead month of my work, for me - the fewer people there are around (all off on vacation), the quieter my days are. I'm savouring this for when it inevitably gets super-busy again for the next 11 months.

  • Cardigan - Wolford, thrifted; purchased here on the weekend for $19.95
  • Cami - Mexx, thrifted; I won't be tracking this, but this is the first wear, and I thrifted it at the same time as the cardi, for all of $2.95
  • Skirt - SP; first worn here in July with the whale sweater
  • Shoes - Asos, consignment, Vancouver; last seen here in June with Valentino and equestrian pink

And since it's dead, people barely noticed that I wore this skirt again, only 2 weeks later! Here it is again, just to refresh your memory:
The proportions were not right: my waist is lost, and my legs look really short.

This time, I did a more fitted top that emphasizes the waist - and I am wearing a cami under it! The blush pink colour of the cami is not as close to my skin colour as it looks in these pics, but good to know that the colour doesn't show up well in photos!
I chose to wrap this beautiful cardigan around my waist and tie it in the back to give it a more "ballet sweater" look. This is a gorgeous cardigan to wear - it was so soft! Not too hot to wear outside, and not too cool in the AC'd office.

Ties at the back, like so.
I liked the skirt much better this time. It's a longer hem than I usually do, and because I'm short, I have to watch how I wear a big piece like this or I end up looking swallowed up by it.

Hatted for the very hot day - it was in the upper 20s today and we're supposed to get the same for the rest of the week. Phew! I'm a delicate flower!
 Pockets for the win!

The stuff:
The slight heel on these shoes worked better with the longer skirt too - and the pinky colour again blended in with my skin. Compare with the black ankle-strap shoes last time, making my legs look very stumpified.

Shiny bling:
I'd planned to wear my hair up and show off the earrings more, but I can't wear a hat if I do that. And I needed the hat!

  • Earrings - vintage fair
  • Crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Amber ring - c. 1996

  1. Thanks for the reminder to try a piece that doesn't quite work with different assessories. The change in sweater length and shoes made a big impact.

    1. Thank you! I'm going to try to do this more frequently: wear an item I didn't like or that didn't quite work the first time, and change things up to see if it's better.

  2. This is stunning. I'm so intrigued at absolutely no necklace with this... This is just so low-key sexy fem and cute and flattering. The umbrella print sighhhhhh.

    1. I was tempted, but I liked how it got that ballet vibe from NOT having a necklace. It was a perfect "Monday" outfit after a long weekend.

  4. What a difference the top makes! And I noticed your hair, too. Mine is about that length. I wonder about bangs....hmmmmmm. Tempting!

    1. Thanks, Rebecca! I know - I look at my forehead wrinkles in that "last worn" picture, and I'm so glad I went with fringe, lol. I say, go for it! It's only hair - it grows back. :)

  6. I'm glad you went back to achieve this great look with the skirt - it's truly a conversation piece with its brollies and structure. And the sweater looks as soft as you describe. Your hair looks great down too. Oh, revel in the quiet. How lovely.

    1. I know, I'm really enjoying the low-stress aspect of my job right now. Such a nice breather. Thanks, Mel - I'm glad I tried again so soon. The sweater was a dream - so soft!

  7. Although I liked your other brolly skirt outfit, I admit that this one is better proportioned. What a great idea to wear the cardigan as a wrap top! Love your massive sun hat and the dainty pink shoes! And guess what: it's cooled down about 10 degrees here, and I actually wore a cardigan today ;-) xxx

    1. Yup, amazing what a few tweaks can do! The ties were long enough on the cardi to make it around my waist, so why not?

Ha! And we are up to 30 today!

  8. COMPLETELY agree with your assessment of the two outfits; the fitted black sweater with cami and the pink heeled shoes make the skirt a keeper. Enjoy the relative calm at work! :)

    1. Thanks, Laurie! I always feel better about an outfit when I've spent a little more time thinking it through and considering the proportions.

Ah, the work calm is so nice!

  10. Indeed, much better with this cardi. Woolfort is the best. Love the top with the shoes. Unexpected colour adding. You are good at that.
    Love the shoes. As always.
You reminded me of our bloggers meeting when I read: I am a delicate flower. Gosh, how I laughed over that. Especially with the swear word in it. Was it the F word? Or something else? Cannot remember.

  11. I do it’s up at the ballerina vibe from this outfit. The black wrapped top is a good choice for such a full skirt. Speaking of skirts, I simply adore this one. I also really appreciate your choice of shoes. The pink suede lace ups are beautiful with this.

  12. The moment I laid my eyes on that skirt i knew it was a stunner... and you could try wearing the black top backwards, it would also look good - i think -
