Monday Mint and Orange, and Goodbye Camper Flashback

I could really get used to 4-day weekends! I did not feel like going to work today - gah, Monday! - but I put my Big Girl Clothes on and faced the day.
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this outfit and 2 out of 3 items in it are leaving my closet. We'll have a Flashback on one of them shortly.

  • Kimono - Dries Van Noten, consignment; first worn here in December 2021, winterized
  • Jumpsuit - Kensie, consignment; last seen here in June 2021 with turquoise bits
  • Shoes - Camper; last worn here in April 2021 with lace and embroidery
  • Leather trenchcoat (below) - vintage 70s, thrifted; last seen here in April

Don't worry, the orange jumpsuit is staying - it's awesome.
Not like this Dries Van Noten kimono, which is horrendous. It wrinkles if you look at it sideways, the sleeves don't stay rolled up and I dislike the mint shade of it. Mint is one of those colours that really doesn't work for me.

Why did I buy it?
I love the fabric! The print is beautiful, with lovely chrysanthemums on it in dark orange and black.

But that's the only thing I really like about it. It covered up all the best parts of the jumpsuit (flutter sleeves, nice small waist, good back view).
Let's add "unflattering rear view" to my list of kimono grievances. I don't even want to think about my horrid cost-per-wear, which is slightly under $45.00. Ugh.

Masked up - I am taking no chances in my office after last week's kerfuffle.
Not that I saw many people.

Incognito outerwear.
It's starting to veer into that weather where it's too warm to wear an actual coat. Hooray!

Accoutrements:
All good things.

  • Scarf - thrifted
  • Gloves - consignment
  • Mask - Lazy Susan's

The stuff:
If you guessed that the shoes are the other thing leaving my closet, you get a gold star. They're not me - too futuristic-looking. I love the heel and the colour and they are comfy, but I do not reach for them.

Copper bling:
All winners here!

  • Necklace - Renoir, vintage 60s, vintage expo
  • Both enameled cuffs - Matisse by Renoir, vintage 60s, separate vintage fairs
  • Rings - consignment
  • Earrings - Matisse by Renoir, vintage 60s, Grandma J's

And now, a wee Flashback on these buh-bye shoes.

Flashback: Camper Shoes

I like Camper brand of shoes - they have clean lines and come in bright colours - and I've had a couple of pairs of them over the years. Local shop Footloose Shoes carries these and I picked up this pair here in January 2020 for $75.00.
Good colour, comfy shoe.

Little nubbies on the bottom.
They feel like slippers!
But I don't like them. Should not have bought them.

I wore the right away here in January 2020.
They have a ballet flat type of look to them, but that vamp is too high over my toes.

I gave away my fake Gucci (Gookey!) bomber jacket this past year (I got my $3.00's worth out of it!), but this is a super-cute outfit.
I still have that skirt. This was in April 2020.

Another item that exited my closet during the pandemic - I gave this (and the green lace bomber) to Ciara.
This was in May 2020.

I didn't wear them again until April 2021.
Same formula as the other skirt outfit, and even the same jacket. I also still have this skirt.

Mathy stuff: Another poor cost-per-wear! I managed 5 outfits in 2 years, for a whopping $15.00 per wear. Move along, ugly shoes.

To amuse myself, I dug up three other pairs of Camper shoes that I've owned since I started blogging:
Oh, my gosh, I LOVED these shoes so much. I literally wore them out (you can see the scuffs on the toe there). That lavender colour rocks my world. I wore them close to 20 times between 2012 and 2016.

I always referred to these as my "concrete" shoes, as they were the same colour as our concrete stairwells at my old office.
They got worn about a dozen times between 2010 and 2012-13-ish. I think I gave them to Cat - they were too tight and too high for me.

I thrifted these around 2018 and wore them a a few times.
I love the idea of these, but they didn't fit right.

Well, I am going to stop beating myself up for making choices that didn't work out, take a deep breath and let it all go! Tomorrow's another day...and another outfit!

  1. With all the gorgeous, one-of-a-kind, amazing items you find, it's unsurprising that occasionally items don't work. Good for you for just moving on! Someone else will love them :)

  2. Whew, glad the jumpsuit is remaining! As for those items that no longer pass muster, nothing ventured, nothing learned, what once felt possible is now spurned, but how would you know if you didn’t give it a go.

At this point Fred would quip that I’ve used up my rhyming quota for the day. ;)

Still smiling over your fabulous weekend and Happy Birthday to the newly minted 50 year old Caro!

    Cheers, Laurie

  3. I never thought I would hear you say "too futuristic-looking" about shoes. Girl you have far more too futuristic-looking shoes and boots in your closet. But I agree, they are a bit too high up your instep, which makes them less pretty.
The jumpsuit is, as you say, perfect and I would have had the same idea as you had: the mint colour of the kimono doesn't matter when I am wearing orange underneath it. But the sleeves and especially taking away your waist is a shame. Perhaps you could sell it on eBay? If is a great brand.
Now I am off to look at alllll you other posts as I have been neglecting you.

  4. Phew, am I glad to hear you aren't ditching the orange jumpsuit! I would have been first in line if you did though ;-)
I'm hearing you on the kimono, even if it's Dries van Noten, which I suspect is the reason you were persuaded to buy it.
Hearing you on the shoes too. I do love the look of them, but the high vamp would bother me as well. I don't recall if I currently have a pair of Rieker shoes, but I used to have a pair of boots by them. Not sure what happened to them ... xxx

  5. Kimonos are hard to wear. I have several that just stay in the closet unworn. The shoes are cool though, I'm sure someone will be delighted to get them.

  6. I love the jumpsuit and am pleased it's not being jettisoned to the giveaway pile. The kimono is far too wishy-washy for you but I'm sure it'll soon find a deserving home.
I love the last pair of flatform Campers, what a shame they weren't right. Jon found a pair of their iconic Pelotas in a charity shop oince but they squeaked like mad! xxx

  7. You could wear the kimono over your night wear at breakfast........ well, no, its just not your colour. If we wouldn't make mistakes, we wouldn't try out anything. That's boring.

  8. That orange jumpsuit is gorgeous. I'm glad it is staying.
The shoes are very cool, it was nice to see a flashback with them, but if you don't feel them, better to get rid of them. Life is to short to wear shoes we don't like.

  9. I'm very glad the jumpsuit is staying. Although I adore kimonos I get the frustration when you feel you have to fuss with an outfit as something like sleeves won't stay in place, so it's definitely better to let it go. At least you got to enjoy it briefly! I think you have such good cost per wear on so many other pieces that you shouldn't feel bad about a slightly higher cost per wear on the shoes and kimono - you're still getting such good value from your clothing!

  10. Glad that the jumpsuit is a winner!, I almost faint when I read that you were going to get rid of some items!, phew!. I really agree about mint colour being difficult (one of my less favourite colours ever), and not a huge fan of kimonos that wrinkle and don't flatter!. Sorry that the Camper shoes didn't fit your style, I think you made the most of them and wore them in many interesting outfits!
    besos

  11. Such a wise approach and outlook on both fashion and life in general. There can be so much liberation and lightening of life's substantial weight on our shoulders when we willingly opt to let things - be they literal objects or otherwise - go.

It is terrific that vibrant, seriously cool orange jumpsuit is staying. It looks SOOO good on you!
