Studs, Spots and Boss Lady Shorts

Yesterday's Mental Health Shop and Zoom call with Mom really helped to lift my spirits, but I'm aware that I'm in a low place on the mood swing pendulum right now (ah, menopause), so I'm being extra careful to dress using my mantras and tools to make myself feel more confident and in control.
A coordinated look of spots and studs with Boss Lady shorts should do the trick!

  • Jacket - Dolce & Gabbana, vintage, thrifted; last worn here over a dishy dress in July
  • Shirt - J. Crew, thrifted; last seen here in July under a tiger-striped bustier
  • Shorts - David Brooks, vintage 80s, thrifted; first worn here in April with Stella and daisies
  • Shoes - Effortless Vivian, Fluevog; last seen here in June with baby blue and bronze

I'm still working through the pre-planned outfits from a Mental Health session of closet creativity a few weeks ago. I'd been saving this look for when I needed to feel "large and in charge."
Aka Boss Lady! I like how the jacket suggests an informal suit here, and also lends an air of casualness to the more dressy and masculine vibe of the shirt and shorts.

I totally look "profesh" here. And since we had three VPs in the office toda, I was really glad I looked the part of the Boss Lady.
"Fake it till you make it" or "fake it till you feel it" - however you say it, this is Clothing as Armour.

I seriously love these wool shorts - they are just the right length, and the big pockets are fantastic for jamming my hands in them.
I am wearing nylons again, as the weather is cooler. I might keep these shorts out over the fall/winter season and play with tights and more suit jackets. I wonder how boots/booties might look?

Masked up.
The studs on the jacket echo the dots on the shirt - it's very noticeable in person. My coworker Killian's reaction was, "Oh, wow!"

  • Mask - by Cat

I rolled the shirt sleeves up after I put the jacket on (it has 3/4 sleeves) to show off my bracelets.
I really liked this outfit - my tools and mantra really do work.

The stuff:
I am fond of these baby blue shoes - they go with a lot in my wardrobe. They're insanely comfy too!

Black and white bling:
I wore the little black cat pin on the jacket pocket flap.

  • Cat pin - Charmaine's; purchased here for $8.00
  • Black and white cuff - vintage fair
  • Lucite/crystal bangle - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Sidney
  • Shield ring - Nine West
  • Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Earrings - thrifted, Sidney
  • Belt - Lady Footlocker, thrifted

As my periodontal appointment is tomorrow/Thursday and I'll be woozy afterwards, I'll be back on Friday to wrap up the week. Stay gold, my friends!

  5. That is one perfect outfit, Sheila! You are really rocking those boss lady shorts, which I can definitely see you wearing with opaques and boots in Autumn/Winter.
The way the studs echo the polka dots is absolutely brilliant, and I'm loving how the jacket, belt and shoes match. Such divine shoes, by the way! xxx P.S. Keeping my fingers crossed for your periodontal appointment!

  6. Echoing everyone’s comments about your outfit. It is a perfectly WOW combination from proportions to colors to matchy matchy and every piece seems as if it were intended just for this ensemble. May you carry the outfit’s vibes with you through your day and into the periodontist’s chair! Here’s to a sound night’s sleep afterwards!

  8. Oh, I love this outfit; the shorts are great for Summer but I can also imagine then looking good with thicker tights and chunky boots in Winter.
Love the shades of blue. x

  9. The Cat Pin! I remember when you got it! It's absolutely perfect echoing the outfit's dots and studs. I truly appreciate your subtle touches like that! (well, I love the bold ones too, don't get me wrong...) ^-^
The swell Boss Lady shorts outfit = perfection. I agree that the shorts would do quite well with tights and boots for fall/winter, if we want to think that far ahead right now.....
Menopause's mood swings just plain suck and I'm sorry you've been blue. When it happens to me, I try to tell myself that it's just errant chemicals and that I can prevail. Usually I do. It's sooooo good that you've got self-soothing activities. You are very attuned to your self care needs, and that's a fabulous thing. Also, as a fellow frequent periodontal/dental flyer, I commiserate and I hope the dental visit went well. (((Big hugs!)))

    1. It wasn't that long ago, Rita, but yes, I finally wore the cat pin! Aw, thank you - that is really sweet of you. I can easily think that far ahead, ha ha! I'm already starting to get excited about having my fall/winter clothes back!

Oh, yes, add menopause to the mix, just for fun, right? I've always been prone to bouts of depression, and I'm a naturally anxious person - menopause just adds another layer of mood swings. I have gotten better at recognizing when a down-swing is coming and taking measure to self-soothe (love that term).

Thanks so much for the good vibes! It all went well, and I swear I felt everyone's positive thoughts. :)

  14. I am with you: I really like this outfit.
Question: could you email the brand of your nylons? They look rather invisible and that is what I like and is hard to find.

    1. Thanks, Greetje! Done - I just buy drugstore nylons, but always in beige, never "nude" which I find too light.

  17. Fantastic outfit. It is so nice to see classically tailored shorts like this being style in a dressed up, yet concurrently wonderfully fun way. I feel like that was something I saw a lot more as a youngster in the 80s and 90s, but which has, unfortunately, not been as common in recent decades. You are showing us all that we need to remedy that posthaste and elevate (some types of) shorts once more from being mere leisure wear (and turn them) into chic boss lady attire.

    1. Thank you, Autumn! I am a fan of these shorts, and enjoy the envelope-pushing that they give my wardrobe. Yes, we haven't really seen shorts come back in a dressy way since the late 90s. It's so funny how these things come around again, isn't it?
