Funky Friday: Stella Daisy Flashback, Cat-Bombed and Big Boss Lady Shorts

Hello, my friends! We made it - it's the weekend! Just a short post today with a wee Flashback, as I feel the need to slow down and be chill, and spend some quality time with my guy and my kitty.

It's Friday, so you know I'm going to either be super-fancy or a little funky. Funky!
Of course, I had to wear my new business shorts. What does a Big Boss Lady wear in warm weather? Why, Big Boss Lady Shorts, obviously.

  • Jacket - 2014 Stella McCartney for Adidas, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here in August 2020 with dotty orange
  • Shirt - Ann Taylor, consignment; last worn here in February under a tiger dress
  • Shorts - David Brooks, vintage 90s, thrifted; purchased here yesterday for $22.99
  • Shoes - 5yMedio; purchased here for $89.00

Today's indoor pics all include Vizzini, who plunked himself down and photo-bombed me.
"My fans miss me."

I LOVED wearing these shorts all day, and showed them off to coworker Gary, as well as the security guard and the IT guy, Keith. General reaction, "Um, okay." Gah, I miss my stylish colleagues!

In case you are wondering, I am wearing nylons with my shorts. I'm pretty pasty and it's not warm enough right now to go bare (the weather's turning to rain as I type), and I also needed a layer between my skin and these new white shoes that also got their first outing.
"I could go to work with you."

As I mentioned when I bought the shorts, I wouldn't want to style them the same as when they were new back in the mid-to-late 90s - I'd look too dated. However, adding a fun printed bomber jacket gives them a sporty vibe, don't you think?

The bomber jacket is Stella McCartney for Adidas (so posh!), by the way, and we'll have a little ol' Flashback on it in a bit.
"Or you could stay home with me?"

I'd like to try making a modern suit with the shorts, just for fun - I'll probably do that next time I wear them. What would you wear with dress shorts? Did you do them "back in the day"?

Masked up.
"The hallway should also fall under my dominion."

I didn't bother with anything else for outerwear, just wore this.

Mask:
I could have worn the yellow one, but went with grey so as not to clash with my scarf.

  • Mask - Lazy Susan's

The stuff:
I was worried that these shoes would tear up my feet, but aside from few tight areas that got a good hand-massaging during the day, they loosened up and were amazing. That is such a comfy heel. I really liked how they looked with shorts - I often include a masculine element in my outfits.

"Beautiful shoes," murmured a slightly creepy guy in the drugstore this morning.

Yellow and black bling:
I took a vintage silk scarf and folded it corner to corner, then rolled it into a wide band. I wrapped it around my throat twice, knotting it in the back, to give an ascot sort of appearance. Another masculine element - I used to wear my dad's scarf like this in the 80s.

  • Silk scarf - vintage, thrifted
  • Square silicon bangle - Materia Design, thrifted
  • Lucite "fang" bangle - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Sidney
  • Silver/onyx ring - Toccara, vintage fair
  • Silver/crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Silver earrings - M&M, consignment, Vancouver

Flashback: Stella McCartney for Adidas Daisy Bomber Jacket

I purchased this snazzy bomber jacket here in March 2019 for $46.40 in a consignment shop in Vancouver, during our last jaunt to the mainland for our anniversary. I didn't blink at that price, as in the 2020/21 collection, for example, lightweight jackets run from $175-330.
I liked the daisy pattern - the centers have been overprinted with yellow, which gives it a slight hand-tinted feel, like an old-timey photo. Because of that, I often wear it with yellow.

The jacket was 20% off that price. "Stella McCartney" is also printed in yellow across the top of the back of the jacket, which you can see in the back picture above.
I am fairly certain this jacket is from the 2014 collection, as it has a tag down the side seam that says, "10/13", i.e. October 2013, where that would be the timing for shipping for the Spring 2014 collection. I can't imagine daisies being in a fall collection.

I wore it right away in April 2019, pairing it with my yellow cords.
Those are in my around-the-house wardrobe now that skinny pants are on the outs, fashion-wise. Shoe Flashback here

I wore it as outerwear during the summer of 2019, as it's a very light nylon (the body is lined with mesh).
This was in June 2019. Shoe Flashback here

I was quickly reminded that nylon doesn't breath. It's so hot to wear in summer!
Worn as a topper again in July 2019. Skirt Flashback here

I was fully prepared to wear it a bunch in 2020, but then...oh, right, that pesky pandemic. This was in April 2020.
I just wore that dress last weekend!

The jacket has two-way zips, so I tried unzipping it from the bottom to show off the waist here in August 2020.
So cute! Shoe Flashback here. I can't wait to wear that skirt again.

Mathy stuff: It's still really early in this jacket's tenure in my closet, but I'm currently at 6 outfits, which brings us to $7.73 per ensemble. I know I'll wear it a bunch more in the future.

Do you have a favourite look? Are you a fan of bomber jackets?

And now, my friends, I am off for the weekend, which looks to be rainy and quiet. Take care, stay safe and be kind (to yourself and others!). Thank you so much for stopping by.

  1. I wore dress shorts with a matching top, nylons and high heels to work in the late 8O's/early 9O's - ONCE. I got called into my boss's office, I worked for the Ann Arbor News. He and two woman evaluated my outfit for it's properness for the office, a no shorts policy. These were pretty much down to my knees are full-skirted. They all ended up voting that they passed the dress code requirement. I was so embarrassed that I never wore them again to work. I was about 2O years old. Having 3 grown ups evaluate my clothes freaked me out.

  2. I was very curious as to how you would style your new to you shorts. I've never worn dress shorts, but I do love a good bomber jacket and the daisy jacket sure does fit that description! I think the softness of the jacket looks great together with the crispness of the shorts. I'm glad your shoes are comfortable - sore feet can ruin your day!

  3. Oh dress shorts, how I loved them back in the early 90’s! I used to wear mine with thick tights for the winter and bare legs in the summer, with penny loafers. Tops varied - shawl collar tops in pastels, a massive shawl collar cardigan with a pastel pattern (I had a t-shirt in each colour to wear underneath), smart floral blouses. My favourite though was a cotton cable knitted cream short sleeved jumper with a square neck with a navy stripe running round it.

All teamed with a peach lipstick, and massive tortoiseshell glasses!

I thought I was the bees knees!

Looking back I would have spent most of that time looking like death warmed up, as I definitely shouldn’t wear pastels or cream!

Still loving your blog Sheila and reading daily. Stay safe. Tat x

  4. Yeah, leather shorts! Love then, and that gorgeous Stella jacket. I have my eye on a pair of Stella platform sneakers! I wore shorts in the 90s. I wore them with a sweater and sort of biker boots. What is it with creepy guys and shoes!!!! I know them too! Have a great weekend!

  5. The shorts look so fun with the bomber jacket! I don't actually have a bombers in my wardrobe - I don't have a lot of jackets really, mostly kimonos, haha!

  6. No need to explain wearing nylons. If I could dress in public, I'd wear nylons/tights EVERY SINGLE DAY.

  7. Such a fun styling. Thos bermuda shorts are fabulous and pairing them with a daisy print bomber jacket made this styling so fun. The white shoes look lovely too and they match white daises print perfectly. I agree that white daises sound like a spring /summer kind of pattern.
I wear nylons in spring all the time, sometimes even in summer (if it is not too hot).

I enjoyed your flashback, I love how you paired that bomber jacket with bold colours in the past. Have a fun weekend!

    1. Thanks, Ivana! Yes, the jacket always feels summery. Yay, I'm not the only nylons-wearing one! :)

Thank you - it's outerwear in those pics, but I like that pop of colour too.

  9. I actually did do dressy shorts a lot back in the mid 90s. I even wore a "short suit" for my sister's wedding. I love how you styled yours in a distinctly non-90s way by wearing them with the daisy patterned Stella McCartney bomber. Trying to make a modern suit with them sounds fun, and I can't wait to see it! I'm hearing you on wearing nylons underneath. It'll be a while yet until I'm ready to go bare-legged :-)
Love the bomber's flashback. My favourite outfit by far is the one from August 2020 with the orange polka dot skirt! Gorgeous!
    Enjoy your weekend, Sheila xxx

    1. Oh, gosh, I love that, Ann! I'm looking forward to a suiting look with them too. I stay in nylons until they are too hot, which is often around July.

Thank you! Yes, I like that one too - doing two colours is a good look.

  10. I quite like your main outfit and yes, I would wear dressy shorts if I had any. I tend to think of dressy shorts as really short trousers rather than spiffed up shorts. As for wearing a bomber jacket, I like yours/Stella’s but for my frame I’ve never been a fan, preferring Jean jackets instead as they can be a tad more fitted. My favorite bomber jacket outfits are with the pink and with the orange skirts. The boldness of the skirts looks just right with the patterned jacket.

Here’s to the weekend of R&R!

    1. Thanks, Laurie! That is an excellent spin on how to style short, as though they were short trousers. Of course! Yes, I get that - I'm fussy with bombers and careful how I style them, as they can add a lot of visual weight. Agreed, the jacket looks best with a bold bottom. Yay, weekend!

    1. Hello, Shaz! Thank you so much! Ha, yes, I'll always own up to - my legs don't look this good naked! Your mind has obviously blocked out your traumatic wearing of dress shorts, ha ha! Take care, my dear.

  12. That's a fun look and what a shame there was noone to appreciate your sartorial efforts!
I used to have a pair of "city shorts", they finished on the knee and were quite fitted with turn-ups (Monsoon sale, slashed from £60 to £6). My favourite combination was over black opaques with mustard suede governess shoes and vintage silk blouse in chartreuse but passed them on to a friend when I became self-employed and had no need for office attire.
I flirted with bomber jackets in the 80s when I was into Hip-Hop! xxx

I waffle on bomber jackets - some years I love them, some not so much.

  15. Love the way you jazzed the shorts with the funky bomber jacket and cool shoes. Brilliant idea!. I wore this kind of shorts back in the 90's with a leather jacket to add my own rock'n'roll vibe.
The daisies are so lovely and you always rock in yellow!, looking adorable in your summery outfits with polka dots shoes!

  16. I never wore dress shorts when they were in style. I did have a pair of below-the-knee german army shorts that I wore in the summer with t-shirts and tank tops, but longer shorts weren't my thing. I like the way you've styled these with the bomber jacket. They would look cool with a pair of converse and a funky t-shirt.

  17. With that stellar first outfit, I think you could single handedly bring elegant, dressier shorts back into the fore of the fashion world. A revival that is long overdue, IMO. You are rocking them to no end!!!
