Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Friday Wrap, Saturday Swoosh, Designer Connections and Cat Pictures

This felt like a very short weekend, didn't it? Friday feels like only yesterday!
Going through my as-yet-unworn clothes for spring/summer and what do you mean, I haven't worn this dress yet? That's an oversight!

This is my entry for "Visible Monday" over at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style.

  • Dress - Diane Von Furstenberg, thrifted; last seen here in August 2017 looking very familiar
  • Shoes - Effortless Bebe, Fluevog; last worn here (3rd outfit) in July with the eyeball dress for theatre with Mom
  • Jacket (below) - Club Monaco, thrifted; last seen here on Thursday

Or maybe I just have a lot of dresses...Yeah, I have a lot of dresses.
I will try to get one more wearing out of this one before the summer is over - I just loved wearing it. It does have the usual issue that wrap dresses have: it gapes open when you sit down or if a breeze hits. As you can see from the top picture, I either have to hold it shut or rely on my trusty camisole and vintage slip to keep me covered.

After work on Friday, I treated my dear friend Elaine to a swanky dinner and movie for her going away gift - she's moving to Hamilton, Ontario, and wow, am I going to miss my "Artner in Crime"! Elaine and I have done so many fun artsy things over the years!
We went to see "McQueen," (link to the site, and here's a good review - all links because I love!) an amazing documentary about the late Alexander McQueen. Highly recommended, if you are interested in fashion, design, and the art of creating clothes. It was quite tragic, as he killed himself, but seeing so many beautiful outfits and finding out more about his life and the business of fashion was very insightful.

And OH, the clothes! I spotted Isabella Blow wearing the matching jacket to my pants in a clip. If you've never heard of her (I hadn't until I saw the film), check out this article here about an exhibit about her that I wish I could have seen! The first picture is her and Alexander McQueen, and in the second picture, there she is in the jacket!
It was a late night, and I was glad of my own jacket as it got quite chilly. I'm certainly getting my money's worth out of it.

The stuff:
I love these shoes - so comfy!

Gold bling:
I liked how the pink and gold worked with the colours in the dress.

  • Bracelet - Lia Sophia, thrifted
  • Cuff - vintage fair
  • Amber ring - c. 1996
  • Amethyst ring - Frances Jewelers, c. 1965, Dad's

Late night - L caught Vizzini sleeping right behind my head.
"I thought this was just between us."
It's hard to catch him being cute - he's still 75% monster, even though he's a middle-aged kitty of 7 years old now.

On Saturday, we played Ultimate Frisbee.
What I wear to the field - I change into my gear there - and out to lunch after.

  • Top - INC, thrifted; first worn here in June with much sparkliness
  • Skirt - LA Hearts, thrifted; last seen here (3rd outfit) in April for a shopping expedition
  • Shoes - Rivers Tambo, Fluevog; last worn here (2nd outfit) last weekend
  • Jean jacket - Ann Taylor Loft, NYC, 2007; last seen here in May

My leg was still bothering me, so I didn't push myself into sprinting as much as I usually do - it is sore today, but not too bad.

It was muggy in the morning, and started raining while we were eating lunch. We need the rain - can't complain! - but the hem of my skirt dragged along the sidewalk and got soaked, even though I'd rolled the waist.

Ah, well, into the wash it goes!
I love the dark "rainy" look of this maxi skirt.

My jean jacket is a classic.
11 years old! It's lasted a long time with me.

The stuff:
You can see that my wet feet left footprints in my new Fluevogs (which were lovely on second wear). Arg.

Turquoise bling:
I am glad I remembered that I own this wonderful 80s leather belt.

  • Belt - thrifted, vintage 80s
  • Cuff - thrifted
  • Earrings - used furniture store
  • Ring - local

Vizzini got up to his usual monkey-business this weekend.
"I attack this shopping bag with vigour!"
What a silly thing.

After my grocery shop today, I wandered into Rich Rags for a poke around - just to look! (Famous last words).
Yes, it's a big sack of a dress with really long arms. It's grey wool, very thick, very luxe - it felt VERY expensive. I could tell immediately it was quality.

Romeo Gigli: I actually recognized this name from the "McQueen" documentary! Alexander McQueen worked for Romeo Gigli as an assistant in the 90s - there is a funny anecdote about him in the movie from Mr. Gigli.
I didn't know much about him as a designer, though, until I starte doing some research this afternoon - he would have been up there with 90s designers like Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Prada if not for some bad financial issues. He was revolutionary for being counter to the big shoulder-pad/heavily made-up look of the 80s, instead focusing on cocoon-like shapes and soft draping that showed off a woman's neck and shoulders - all qualities of this dress I found. A couple of good bios here and here, if you're so inclined.

My dress was in with the XLs in the shop (it pays to look through every size!) and is labeled a size 46, which is about a modern size 10. I'm 100% sure it's wool (the content/made in tag is missing), and most likely made in Italy. I think this is probably from the late 80s or early 90s.
It's a very drapey fit on top, and the sleeves are crazy-long, which I actually really like, and it's fitted through the hips and ends at the calf - a really amazing silhouette! It was half-price at $27.50.

Okay, I still have some weekend time left, and I'm going to spend it with my two guys.
"Me, and the Man."
That's right, bud! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, and wishing you all the best for the week ahead!

  3. What a great find on that dress - while I've heard of Alexander McQueen I'd never heard of that designer. I have a rather embarrassingly large number of McQueen skull scarves, they are just so fun and a bit of an unexpected print with my outfits :)

I really like your ulti outfit, such a nice maxi skirt!

  5. Love your DVF classic wrap! And what a find on the Romeo Gigli - that silhouette sounds divine. I love it so much when my cat Stinky sleeps on my head in the early mornings, that's like heaven to me (she's really old). Thanks for sharing the great looks, xox,

    1. Thank you, Patti! I was so excited to find a Gigli piece! Vizzini has just started doing this, stretching out behind my head, and it's so nice to have him sit so close (he is mostly a lap-cat). Aw, sweet Stinky!

  7. Love the wrap dress, even though I understand the issues of wearing one. This one's definitely worth it, though. Saturday's outfit is my favourite. That belt is just fabulous! I do love a dark denim jacket, they're so versatile. I wear mine all the time, and it's been with me for years as well. The documentary sounds quite interesting and I had a look at the Isabella Blow link: that jacket indeed matches your trousers! xxx

  9. I'm not usually a fan of wrap dresses by your DVF is magnificent on you - those colours rock! Loving the sweeping maxi skirt and super cool glasses, too!
Vizzini's antics always have me in stitches.
I'm keen to watch the McQueen documentary, I've heard great things about it. Are you a Wes Anderson fan? Blow had a cameo in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. xxx

    1. Yes, me neither - I hate how they open up when you wear them - but (same) I love the colours on this one. It's really nice quality too (silk). Thanks, Vix!

Oh, I will have to look for that! I love Wes Anderson! Thank you.

  10. A few weeks ago i tried on a DVF wrap dress and I did not buy it because my boobs showed and also it opened at the front... I could have layered it !
Oh and Romeo Gigli ! I know that name very well because about 10 years ago I actually worked with that fragrance ;) and I picked up a red skirt suit by him in the consignment shop for under 5.00 USD.
