Velvet Pirate in Bustier and Tweed, and New Hallowe'en Decorations

I decorated my office's Reception area for Hallowe'en today, and it got me feeling enthusiastic for the spooky season, so I popped into the Dollarama on the way home and picked through the detritus of their Hallowe'en aisle for some new décor. It's time to decorate the house!

I also get my spooky on through my clothes in the days leading up to Hallowe'en. Today, I am a Velvet Pirate.
I also love to pile on the creepy accessories this time of year (oh, who am I kidding, I wear it all year!).

  • Velvet coat - Tahari, thrifted; first worn here in March in a burgundy Velvet Pirate outfit
  • Shirt - Eddie Bauer, consignment; last seen here in August with acid wash and chrysanthemums
  • Bustier - 3.1 Philip Lim, consignment; first worn here (2nd outfit) in May for theatre with Yvonne
  • Skirt - Marc Cain, thrifted; first seen here in June with PANK bookends
  • Boots - Coach, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here (2nd outfit) earlier this month with vintage 80s leather

I wore my outfit without the Velvet Pirate coat for most of the day - I was up and down ladders, sticking rats, bats and spiders to the walls, and festooning all the doors with "Caution" tape. I had a glow on by the time I was done!
All of the main components of this outfit - the Velvet Pirate coat, the black bustier and the tweed skirt - have only been worn once each previously.

That's how you know your wardrobe works - you can just mash things together and make an outfit.
Add a white shirt and black boots and BAM. Outfit.

All of this was very comfortable overall.
One of my readers dubbed this aesthetic "Soft Goth" many years ago.

With the Velvet Pirate.
Avast, me hearties! We've been watching the new season of "Our Flag Means Death" (which I dearly love) and all that swanky piratry is rubbing off on me.

This is the perfect coat to wear under the bright overheads at the office, where you can see all the embroidery.
This coat is covered - check out the front (here) and the back (here) for edited photos.

Coat done up.
I did up two of the snaps only when I was outside, and I was appreciative of the generous pockets.

Incognito outerwear.
Matchy! My hat stayed on, even in the gusty wind.

Accoutrements:
I love having a full "set of wines/burgundies.

  • Wool gloves - Parkhurst
  • Velvet scarf - thrifted
  • Hat - Club Monaco, thrifted

The stuff:
I adore these suede boots, which do not get worn for walking more than a block or two outside - I change into a pair of Doc Martens to walk to and from work. I carry all of my shoes to work, either in my backpack or a tote bag.

Spooky bling:
I realized just as I was about to leave the house, that I'd forgotten to put on earrings. I hastily grabbed...a pair of spider earrings!

  • Necklace - The Bay, c. 2008
  • Silver/obsidian ring - Tocara, vintage fair
  • Silver/obsidian spider ring - gift from Mom and Dad, c. 1986
  • Silver snake ring - BC Museum Gift Shop, 1986
  • Silver/obsidian chunky ring - vintage mall, gift from L
  • Spider earrings - gift
  • Snake brooch - gift from Mom and Dad, c. 1985
  • Spider brooch - vintage mall, gift from L

Here's my wee haul from the Dollarama.
A tablecloth, a glittery bat, two gold tinsel curtains, a purple glittery spider (she glows in the dark!), a pink glitter spider, three bags of glitter gourds, and a paper fold-out chandelier.

I also pulled these out of the closet that I picked up last year at end-of-season.
A paper circle, "Enter at your own risk" tape, spiders and webbing, and an orange and black glittery spider garland.

Off to decorate! Stay tuned!

  1. My eye immediately goes to the bustier and skirt - gray shoulder straps on top, bustier body is black, then the skirt body is essentially gray with a black bottom band. Repeating pattern harmony!

Your decoration finds are so colorful, they take the sting out of spooky and make it fun! Do you receive trick or treaters? As much as we sometimes grumble about all the door answering, we quite enjoy seeing the youngest children having a ball being costumed and collecting candy.

    1. The straps of the bustier are actually organza, and are sheer black - I know they look grey here.

We do not get ANY trick-or-treaters in our 'hood - condos usually are no-gos as letting in random people isn't secure.

  2. This outfit definitely has goth vibes! That bustier is fantastic, and so are the embroidered coat velvet coat and those boots. Also loving the spooky bling, the spider brooch and earrings in particular. The range of Hallowe'en stuff on sale never fails to amaze me. When, back in the early 90s, my ex-boyfriend and I hosted a horror movie night on the 31st, I had to search long and hard to find anything at all. I remember we had ghost and bat bunting! Hallowe'en wasn't a thing yet here at the time! xxx

  4. Love your pirate outfit and the Velvet Pirate Coat is amazing! Soft goth is a great description. I love Soft goth and now that the weather is finally cooling off here I think I'll search my closet today for velvets, suede and whatever else I can find. Sounds like a something fun to do besides changing and washing the sheets. Cool decoration finds! I decorated last week and was afraid the new kitten who we adopted from our back yard would mess with the decor. So far he's left it alone. Halloween is my favorite! Happy decorating!!

  5. The bustier with the velvet coat over the top is just magic, what great proportions. If Philip Lim had a brother called Severed he'd have the most seasonal appropriate name ever.
I had to scroll past that spider brooch very quickly, it gives me the heebie-jeebies! xxx

  6. See? Carrying your (high heeled) shoes to the office, is what I used to do as well. Now I can do that no more. Enough about the wining Greetje, they all know by now.
The boots and coat are favourite with me.
