Mom-Day Birthday Lunch at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, in Denim, Plaid and Ruffles

Welcome back to Mom-Day Adventures, Gentle Readers! I missed seeing Mom last week due to our Seattle Getaway (here).
Mom went on a shopping splurge for herself at her favourite shop, Laura, and is wearing one of her new blouses, a pink ruffly number that we'll check out in a bit. The necklace was a gift from my Dad's mom, my Grandma J, she of the copper jewelry.

I'm still delighting in playing with all my old friends clothes, so nothing new in today's outfit. I really need to take some time to try on all my new-to-me purchases and create ensembles with them - life is so hard, har har.
I am always happy to wear this amazing Vivienne Westwood skirt - it's tricky due to all the swoops and swirls and twists of the fabric. Sometimes I get the skirt right, and sometimes not. It worked today, phew!

  • Denim jacket - G-Star Raw, consignment, Powell River; first worn here in August with bronze pleats
  • Stretch silk tuxedo blouse - no label, thrifted; last seen here in March with pirate velvet
  • Skirt - Vivienne Westwood Anglomania F/W 2011, consignment; last worn here (2nd outfit) in June with primary colours
  • Boots - Baroque Velasquez, Fluevog; last seen here (2nd outfit) in March with the Tsarina vest

I nearly always pair this skirt with at least one primary colour, but as a result of my brilliant boots re-org in my closet, I "discovered" that my frilly boots look pretty darned good with it.
It was just a matter of pulling my ruffled blouse as a bookend and I nearly had an outfit.

Add a fitted dark jean jacket for a modern edge.
Demonstrating the confounding skirt's twistiness. What is this random piece? The fabric is a shiny blue woven plaid, probably a linen-cotton blend.

This crossover part looks better in the back. Now I just have to remember that for next time!
Mom dropped me off after lunch, and I had a browse through Turnabout where the staff were agog at my outfit. I love an appreciative audience, people who love clothes like I do.

I've had this thrifted stretch silk blouse for ages. I like the little ruffles down the front and the long "tux" cuffs.
I adore a burgundy - it's one of those shades that looks good on most people.

Incognito - the day started sunny, then changed to fog! Then it went back to sunny and hot. Oh, October, you scamp.
With all this dark, I needed pops of brightness. Copper is a fun pick - my purse was admired at House of Savoy by Emilie.

Accoutrements:
A copper metallic purse, my bug scarf and wooly gloves.

  • Leather purse - Arcadia, consignment
  • Silk scarf - Smoking Lily, vintage 90s, Mom's
  • Wool gloves - Parkhurst

The stuff:
My boots were much admired, wherever I went - people on the street, even.

Copper bling:
A bunch of my copper is back in my jewelry wardrobe - I love wearing it, it's such a warm metal.

  • Copper belt - Renoir, vintage 50s, vintage fair
  • Copper/brass necklace/earrings - vintage 50s, Grandma J's
  • Copper ball ring - vintage 50s, consignment
  • Shiny O ring - Glee, local
  • Bronze ring - P. Sarpaneva, vintage 70s, vintage expo
  • Shiny ring - Glee, local
  • Copper brooch - vintage 60s, thrifted
  • Copper/turquoise ring (not shown) - vintage 60s, Grandma J's

Yes, that belt is solid copper!

Mom and I parked near the golf course and walked to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel (last visited here for L's birthday in June).
We chatted and marveled at the fog rolling in, when...

Is that a CHICKEN??
A bevy of chickens! So many chickens!

I see their coop in the distance.
They clucked at us in a friendly way. Note the two sitting in the tree together, having a good gab, no doubt.

We're there!
We had a lovely lunch.

Mom in her gorgeous pink blouse. Great colour on you!
I LOVE the full sleeves and ruffled cuffs. "Not so long that they drag," noted Mom.

I peeked into the dining room afterwards.
Fancy!

This looks like a cozy spot to hang out.
I have sprawled across these couches (proof here).

Spooky fog!
I like how layered the trees look.

This is why it's called "Oak" Bay.
Garry Oaks, all over the place, dropping acorns and leaves like mad!

We drove through the golf course on the way back to the Ave, where Mom dropped me off.
It's rumoured to be haunted!

Mom gave me a big bag of mixed chocolates from Rogers Chocolates and there's a gift card at Fluevog with my name on it.
The card is so apt - it describes us perfectly. "And we didn't even kill each other," Mom quipped.

Mom, I am so happy I inherited your warped sense of humour! Thank you so much for the lovely birthday lunch! I love you!
And in case your wondering, my friends, what I bought at Turnabout and House of Savoy, the answer is...nothing. Nothing rang my bell or grabbed me - it does happen every so often!

I'll leave you now to be off to meet L for dinner at Zambri's - it's birthday dinner and I'm wearing the exact same outfit! I'll be back on Sunday with tales of adventure - please do swing by and visit!

  1. Hello Sheila and Helen! You both look fabulous. Helen's pink blouses is so pretty and She, you've nailed it with the tricksy skirt, positioning the crossover at the back gives it a late Victorian look, something Dame Viv was very fond of. The boots are glorious!
The dining room looks very elegant and the chickens very Autumnal in their shades of red and bronze.
I bet you'll have fun spending those vouchers! xxx

  4. Thank you for the flashback to 2013! I hadn’t yet “met” you on your blog so it was fun to get a glimpse of your past!

Helen, between you and Sheila my tastes in clothing are softening! Am usually not a fan of ruffles but your blouse has just the right touch and, as you noted, they won’t be scooping up the food. ;) The color is soothing.

Happy Birthday again Sheila! Special to have a day with your Mom celebrating. Um, Helen, I have come to feel that a child’s birthday is also cause for the Mom to celebrate, just saying. :)

Sheila this is perhaps my favorite incarnation of outfits with this skirt. The colors, accessories, and proportions are perfect, am not surprised people commented as you crossed their paths.
I know you will enjoy your birthday dinner with L!

Happy weekend to all of you and Vizzini too!
    Cheers, Laurie

  5. That's one glorious outfit, Sheila, and I'm nodding in agreement with Vix on the late Victorian vibes. Your copper bling is magnificent!
Loving the spooky fog photos, your Mom's pretty pink blouse, and the birthday card you got from her. Wish my Mom was still around. So many things have been left unsaid. xxx
