Lace and Flocked Denim

Today's outfit features another new-to-me item, one that I was initially not that sure of when I bought it.
But after wearing this flocked denim jacket, and getting all kinds of comments on it, I must conclude: it is a good purchase.

  • Jacket - Dolcezza, consignment; purchased here for $20.80
  • Dress - Luisa Spagnoli, thrifted; first seen here (3rd outfit) in February 2021 for a Zoom call
  • Shoes - Poetic License; last worn and Flashbacked here in February 2021
  • Coat (below) - Stop Staring!, thrifted; last seen here in October 2021

As I mused last night over what to wear with it, I browsed through my skirts, thinking something red or coral, or maybe black and white.
Nothing grabbed me, so I checked my as-yet-unworn dresses, and my eyes alit on this lovely red and black lace dress.

I bought this last year in a thrifting expedition for a mere $12.50 (score!), without being able to try it on.
I knew right away that the dress would be awesome under the jacket.
The casual vibe of the jacket keeps the "I'm a party dress!" vibe down to a dull roar.

The dress solo.
It's large on me but I knew that it would be when I bought it.
It has zero stretch, so I like the extra roominess. A belt cinches it in and gives the skirt volume - the dress came with a fabric belt, but I removed it.

Masked up - can you tell I like black/white/red together?
I was pleased with how nicely all these pieces harmonized.

Outerwear - the expected rain ended up being all blue skies!
I'll take it, although the wind was bitterly cold. Brrr.

Accoutrements:
More black and white and red.

  • Scarf - fake Louis (Lewis!) Vuitton, thrifted
  • Beret - Parkhurst, consignment
  • Gloves - Parkhurst
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
Aren't these shoes fabulous? I've had them since 2008 and this is their 27th wearing. The toes were coming apart last time I wore them so I super-glued them then; they were totally fine this time.

Thematic bling:
More matchiness!

  • Belt - gift from Ruth
  • Bakelite stretch bracelet - vintage, gift from L, vintage mall
  • Lucite bangle - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Sidney
  • Earrings - vintage fair
  • Silver/enamel ring - antique shop, Sidney
  • Silver/onyx ring - Toccara, vintage fair
  • Cat pin - Charmaine's

The little black cat pin got lost in the maze of flocking on the denim jacket pocket. I should have stuck it to my beret. Next time!

  1. The red dress is such a fun pairing with this jacket and I'm glad you've decided it's a keeper - it does look so lovely on you! I like the studded belt with the dress as well :)

    1. Thanks, Mica, yes, I enjoyed wearing it - I love the grommet belt!

  2. S T U N N I N G ! My second thought was that the dress is a perfect fit so it was eye opening to realize the impact that the right belt can have on an outfit where sizing could otherwise be an issue. Third thought - hair style and outfit complement one another.

I *knew* the jacket would be a keeper and am so delighted you decided the same! The entire ensemble reminds me of another era, only modernized. Maybe the 40s?

Venturing out today (LOL with snow still on the ground) with a friend to the NY Botanical Gardens in the Bronx to see the orchid displays. Between the weather, our tickets for opening time, and it being a weekday, we figure it will be fairly low in terms of other visitors. In any case, makes me think of the outings that you and your Mom enjoy together!

    1. Thank you, Laurie! No, the dress is a couple sizes too big, but I'm larger in the top (boobs!) and with no stretch, I actually prefer it large for movement. The belt works a miracle. Thanks for the hair compliment!

Yes, the shape of the coat is very much Dior's "New Look" of 1947. The brand does retro-inspired pieces - I scored it for less than $10 years ago.

Oh my, that sounds like so much fun! Enjoy and take lots of pictures!

  4. I'm not sure why you weren't sure about that flocked denim jacket. It's a great piece and it works so very well with the lace dress. Pairing it with red was the perfect choice. Oh, and how I love that coat! Loving the shoes as well, although my feet hurt from just looking at them :-) xxx

    1. Sometimes I am reminded how much I like something when I put it on - I liked this when I tried it, and should have trusted my instincts. Thanks, Ann! I love the coat too.

I didn't walk much in the shoes, but they do have a platform, so it's not as high as it looks.

  5. I can see where Laurie's coming from, there is a nod to a previous era with the retro coat, beret and lace dress brought bang up to date with the denim jacket and rivetted belt.
Your weather sounds like ours, Spain's spoilt me, I haven't felt warm since I got home! xxx

    1. Yes, for sure, Vix. I really liked the mix in this outfit.

Yup, lots of rain. It's spring...almost!

  6. Oh my, I am drooling. Love the shoes. As I look down at my navy dansko clogs, with the toes worn off and then spy the brown dansko clogs I flung off last night before bed, I just have a little sad sigh of jealousy.

    1. I thought of you, Kim! I can't wear these that often due to the heel, but I didn't do much walking in them. Sounds like you should get some new shoes! Live vicariously, don't be jealous.

  7. Oh my goodness Shiela, the whole outfit is a big Wow; I love every single piece of it!
The dress is fab; I adore the colours and scalloped hem-line; the swishy, side buttoned coat with great collar and belt; the equally fab shoes with ribbon bows (I have a thing about ribbon bows) and the ‘stuff’ which matches perfectly. X

  8. Hard to go wrong with a red dress (I mean, unless you're on trial for murder or something) and that jacket is lovely with it.
Completely in love with the long coat. I need something like that.

  9. I'm a big fan of your outfits that have a touch of bad-ass rocker chic to them, this being no exception. I liked the jacket when I saw it in your previous post, and I think you made an excellent choice pairing it with the red lace dress.

I think this jacket enhance any red or black piece nicely, lots of possibilities!

  11. I love that the dress and jacket together have a mildly grunge(?) aesthetic!

  12. Yes, the jacket looks good with the dress, but on its own with the tough belt and with these shoes I really like the dress as well. A Luisa Spagnoli..that is a posh brand.

  13. Hardcore love this awesome black & deep red ensemble. Little by little, I am working to up the percentage of both those colour in our home decor and have long made them staples in my wardrobe. Whether together or separate, they just feel like me. :)
