Birthday Month: Mom-Day in Emerald

Ah, a day off! I need to recharge my batteries to deal with Friday before I go into my weekend. I am a person of habits, and all this disruption lately has been very stressful and anxiety-ridden. I need to put on some armour and a bright colour, stat!
Mom and I got together today, and I also wanted to look fancy for her. Plus, Birthday Month is starting!!

  • Sweater - Sonia Rykiel, consignment; last worn here in September with red, white and black
  • Dress - Escada, consignment; last seen here in February with blue velvet
  • Shoes - Summertime Moonbeams, Fluevog 2007, consignment; last worn here a couple of weeks ago to debut my mullet

This is only my third wearing of this wonderful coat-dress. The colour is such a deep and rich emerald green, and it's a joy to wear. Pockets!
I added a bunch of "tough" accessories for extra punch. I always make it a goal to wear all my favourite things around my birthday.

I layered a thin black sweater underneath it for warmth and coverage, and I have a short black half-slip on the bottom half. I scrunched the sweater's sleeves up when indoors.
I love the wide rounded shoulders on the dress - there's no padding, just amazing construction.

One deep vent on the back.
This is 100% silk, even the lining. Escada is a high-end brand.

Masked up - Mom and I walked down to the pub for a late lunch.
It was sunny and crisp, and the sun felt good our faces.

I just added some extras for going outdoors. This dress doesn't work under a coat.
I had two lovely compliments on the way. A construction worker hollered that she loved my coat, and another lady gushed over how gorgeous I looked. Aw!

Accoutrements:
I took off my rings and popped them into my pockets before pulling down my sleeves and putting my long leather/wool-lined gloves on. They're brown (not black) but I didn't care.

  • Gloves - Club Monaco, consignment
  • Scarf - Pierre Balmain, vintage 80s, thrifted
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
These shoes are far more comfy than they look - I easily strolled to the pub and back in them. That's only a 1.5" heel when you subtract the platform - shoe math!

Brassy bling:
I wore three things of Mom's - she's got an eagle eye and spotted them all.

  • Belt - BCBG Max Azria, consignment
  • Bronze brutalist ring - vintage 70s, vintage mall
  • Silver ring - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Earrings - Aldo
  • Brass/leather cuff - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Brass astrology necklace - Mexican, vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Poe cuff - Jezebel Charms, gift from L

Vizzini briefly roused himself from his day-sleep to say hello.
"I know you."

Mom's wearing a black and pale pink sweater (very Chanel, but she was inspired by Audrey Hepburn), and one of her awesome 70s Brutalist-style necklaces (it has matching earrings) that I covet.

Vizzini wanted to sleep on me.
"I can't believe you woke me up for this."

He crept under my TV blanket and snoozed on my lap for a couple of hours while Mom and I gabbed and drank tea.
"I like this kind of visit. I nap, you keep me warm."

Aw, what a cutie!

Mom and I took our selfie in the hall before leaving for the pub.
Love you, Mom! Thanks so much for the early birthday present and the lovely card!

When I got home, someone was waiting for me.
"My tum is cold."

He looks like a Venus Fly-cat, but he's totally fine with a good tummy rub.
"Don't spill all my secrets, Woman."

As you may have surmised, my birthday is this weekend! And it's a long weekend for Thanksgiving in Canada, so I'm signing off now and will be back on Monday with tales of adventure! Have a wonderful weekend yourselves, and if you lift a glass on Saturday night I shall do the same, and we can toast me turning 54 years old. Thanks so much for visiting!

  5. You can't start celebrating your birthday early enough, or long enough for that matter, so I'm already wishing you the happiest of birthdays, Sheila!
I'm a creature of habit too, so I totally get how you feel. I always need time to get my head around things and adjust, although I must say I've become slightly better at it with age!
That emerald green coat/dress is a real stunner, Sheila, and I love your tough accessorizing, which suits it perfectly.
How lovely to start off birthday celebrations with your Mom. It'll be the weekend - and long one at that - before you know it. Enjoy! xxx

    1. I so very much agree, my friend! Thank you so much, Ann!

It's a hard adjustment - I really don't want to go back to the state of high stress I used to work in, so hopefully this past year and half have helped me manage it better. It does get easier.

Thank you - I love the rich green, and the 'tough' accessories. I know, I'm knee-deep in it now!

  13. I hope you had a wonderful long weekend birthday - how convenient that the calendar gives you an extra day off to celebrate. The Escada coat dress is such a splendid piece - the colour, the fabric, the shape, it's gorgeous and perfect for a Birthday lunch with your Mom. I think you should celebrate your birthday all month. Mine is in November and it's a big one this year so even though I can't go to New York I will make the most of the entire month.
