Bigass Stay-Cation Weekend Wrap-Up: Training Day of Indolence; Floral Brunch and Shop; Brown, Boots and a Bag

Woo, what a whirlwind of a weekend it's been. I could get used to this. I've got so much to share, so get yourself a cup of whatever liquid you desire, and strap yourselves in - we have a lot to get through!

Some of you may recall that for L's birthday he usually throws a Day of Indolence. Everyone takes the day off, we start at a diner for breakfast, and then pub-hop all over town for the day. It's a very merry time - the last time we did it was here in June 2019, two full years ago!

Last year there was no way, but this year we're okay to have up to 6 people at a table in a pub, so we did a mini version, the "Training" Day of Indolence. I like to be funky for these occasions, and you know I was dying to wear my new Vivienne Westwood skirt...
I indulged my rock & roll side - I felt hugely badass in this.

  • Vest - Chiqle, thrifted; last worn here in September 2020 with my doily dress
  • Iron Maiden tour shirt - 2018, Portland, not tracked
  • Skirt - Vivienne Westwood Anglomania, F/W 2011, consignment; purchased here for $125.00
  • Boots - Woodland East End, Fluevog; purchased (for $399.00) and last worn here (4th outfit) in March with this same tee (and duplicated the outfit the next day for work)
  • Leather coat (below - Danier Leather; last seen here (2nd outfit) in April

L and a blurry Vizzini photobombing me.
I had so much fun wearing this skirt - it's very swooshy and intricate.
You can see a bit of the high opening on the side there.
So many gathers and tucks.
It's rather like a pretzel.

Walking boots.
And of course, the plaid goes with the tartan skirt.

Masked up.
The weather was erratic, so in addition to the acid wash vest over my tee, I also wore my yellow leather jacket.
I loved how this all looked together.
Ready to go!

Accoutrements:
We still had to wear our masks when not at our tables, but it was so good to walk outside without one.

  • Purse - Danier Leather, thrifted
  • Mask - Lazy Susan's

The stuff:
I kept these boots out for spring/summer, and I'm happy to get another wearing of them. The weather was quite a bit cooler today after a few days of extremely hot temps.

Badass bling:
I even wore my swear rings!

  • Belt - gift from Ruth
  • Lucite/silver bangle - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Vancouver
  • Lucite "fang" bangle - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Sidney
  • Lapis lazuli ring/swear rings - Wendy Brandes
  • Silver/crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Bar brooch - vintage 1986, Fairweather, gift from Mom and Dad
  • Bug brooch - c. 1999, Le Chateau
  • Ear-balls - Dior, consignment

L chilling out in the morning before we strolled down to the Fernwood Inn.
His beloved Bruins jersey, ready for the next game.

We were shocked as we passed Victoria High School: our Ulti field is gone! What it used to look like here
I have a feeling we'll have to find another field to play on.

We grabbed a table on the patio - Greg was the first to arrive.
It had been sunny in the morning, but by the time Carolyn arrived, the rain was starting to come down.
She rode her bike down.
There's my girl! It was nice to see the Belfry - I hope Mom and I will be able to go back to the theatre next season.

Nick arrived next.
Nick! It was getting pretty windy by this point.

We lasted about ten minutes and then got moved to their semi-indoor patio.
Greg and L - rock on!

Caro, me and Nick.
Ronnie, Caro's husband, showed up an hour or so in, and after lunch we all strolled about 8 blocks to Christie's Pub.
Ron took this picture, with this cool mural in the background. We all enjoy a good pose, yo.
Nick and Greg enjoying cheeky "road pops".

Caro rode her bike alongside us.
Ron in the yellow slicker - we matched!

We thought this house's window sign was funny - "Don't speak moistly." Ha!
Awesome pic, Ronnie! Thanks!

Caro took these two - what a cool little red car this is.
Ha, I'm always ready to pose.
My road pop is non-alcoholic.

Ah, urban deer.
Must be Victoria. We hung out at Christie's long enough to have dinner, and then walked home.

L hung out at Nick's afterwards, and I arrived home to a rapturous greeting.
*snore*

Gee, thanks, Vizzini. I missed you too.

On Saturday, L and I did brunch at the Ruby, then went to our eyecare place where I ordered a pair of prescription sunglasses. I'm so excited - I have never had them before! They should be ready in a few weeks, and rest assured, they are maximum Movie Star!
After that, we went our separate ways - L to pick up some CDs, and me to meet up with my coworker friend, Lada, for a shop at the Velvet Crease and MONA.

  • Jacket - Paparazzi, thrifted, Vancouver; last worn here in December 2020 with leather pants
  • Sweater - Wanko, thrifted; last seen here in February, layered under grey Gigli
  • Skirt - Firenze Santa Barbara, vintage 80s, thrifted; last worn here in April 2020 with blue and birds
  • Boots - BCBG Max Azria; last seen here (2nd outfit) for a Happy Hour Zoom call in April

As you might have surmised from the turtleneck, boots and coat, it was quite a bit chillier. It was very windy and the temps dropped dramatically back down to the 11-13 range.
I had oodles of compliments on this embroidered coat, as I always do when I wear it - it's rather spectacular. You can check out my "last worn here" above for a Flashback, the last time I wore it.
Boots for walking, and an added scarf for warmth.
Acid yellow leather skirt for matching.
I had to take my jacket off only once, when we were shopping at the Velvet Crease - I overheated when I was out of the wind.

Masked up.
This is how most people saw me.

Accoutrements:
The scarf is printed with gold amoebas and parameciums.

  • Silk scarf - Smoking Lily, vintage 90s
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
The boots are too big to photograph. The belt is aluminum - it's really light.

  • Belt - vintage fair
  • Silver/amethyst ring - vintage mall
  • Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Silver earrings - Israel, consignment; purchased here for $12.00

Lada did very well, finding a gorgeous grey striped shirt-dress by Calvin Klein for $35.00, and an H&M black pleated skirt for $26.00 at MONA next door.

I found this lavender thick cotton (almost a denim-weight) skirt.
I love that big floral, and all those colours are so awesome. You know I have a few pairs of shoes this will match!

I spotted the "Carven" on the buttons.
The buttons undo, but the front placket is sewn down (the skirt zips up the back).

Speaking of "sewn down"...
...did the previous owner not realize that these are real pockets?

I unstitched them, and voila!
Massive pockets!

I know the brand Carven from the rack-I-can-rarely-afford at Turnabout.
Sure enough, this is from their runway Spring 2014 collection - it's the 3rd look on Vogue's coverage here (links because I love!), and also in the 5th look here. This would have retailed for between $500-700 - but I only paid...$25.20! It was even 20% off the tagged price! What a score!

After resting up, L and I had Yvonne and Randall over to our place to hang out for the evening - it felt so weird, having people in our house!
As you can see, we got over that quickly, and had a little dance party! Thanks for the pic, Randall!

On Sunday, we slept in a bit, then I made our weekly Big Breakfast and got ready to head to town to meet up with my friend Jen.
We planned our meet-up a couple of weeks ago, when we weren't able to do anything other than go for a walk with someone, so we ducked into Dots to avoid the rain.

  • Blouse - Cache, thrifted; last worn here in March with a corduroy suit
  • Suede skirt - Ann Taylor, thrifted; last seen here in January with a full-length vest
  • Boots - Matisse, consignment; last worn here in January with urban camo
  • Cape (below) - Dafydd Snowdon, vintage 60s, thrifted; last seen here in March

I usually keep a few fall-ish things out for spring/summer, just in case we get some chilly weather.
Shockingly (har), we are back to our "June-uary" weather here, with rain in the forecast. It rained most of the day.

Not that I need a lot of excuses to wear this wonderful blush pink silk equestrian blouse.
Or this butter-soft suede skirt.
Even the boots are old friends.

Masked up - I now will remove my mask outdoors (baby steps for my nervousness).
Ready for whatever the weather brings.
I love this Welsh wool cape. I did get caught in the rain on my way home, but it was just spitting.

The stuff:
Minimal amounts of things.

  • Bag - Ted Lapidus, vintage 90s, vintage fair
  • Mask - by Mom
  • Necklace - Givenchy, vintage 80s, vintage fair
  • Earrings - vintage shop, c. 1996

Jen found a dress and a jacket at Dots, and I found another pair of thin petit-pants for wearing under dresses and skirts in summer.
"These are not edible at all, Woman!"

What a goofball.

They're by B. Young, and retailed for $25.00.
They started out at $14.99 at Dots, then were marked down to $5.99.

On my walk home, I ducked into Rich Rags for a quick look around and found a treasure! My friend Elaine alerted me to the bags of Enid Collins, via an article from the NY Times here
I spotted the bright design, noting that all of the trim and handles were leather.
A plain back - the giant safety pin was in the zippered compartment inside it.

The name of the bag: Roadrunner.
Enid Collins (EC) and a copyright symbol - she created hundreds of whimsical designs and actually did copyright 766 of them!
The leather is nailed to a wooden bottom.

The inside of the bag has a rigid backing material - this one has slight cracks, due to its age.
Below is the Collins of Texas logo, which tells me this is past 1970.
There's an excellent resource here of many of her designs, although I didn't find this exact one (there were many variations on the popular designs like this one).

These are very highly collectible, and sell now for between $50 and 100 for a common design like this! Julia of Rich Rags generously let me have this for $25 (it was marked at $29.00).

And...phew! You made it, that's the end of my post. I'm exhausted and the cat is pawing at me to feed him, so I'll leave you with big thanks for visiting! I'll be popping around to your blogs soon!

  8. Sounds like a fun weekend! Fabulous outfits; I really loved the embroidered coat/yellow skirt ensemble and the pink equestrian blouse and suede skirt was brilliant. And of course the Vivienne Westwood skirt looked terrific on you. The handbag is glorious! I think Goody from 'Eat the Blog' has several Enid Collins bags; they're so quirky.

Hope your weather improves - we're into a second week of warm, mostly sunny weather. I think it might be summer!

Ugh, it's not summer yet, not by a long shot. Still 3 more weeks of spring!

  9. Yet another fun-packed weekend, Sheila! I'm pleased to see you've already been wearing the Vivienne Westwood skirt as I couldn't wait to see you styling it. And what a stunner of an outfit you've created with it. Vivienne herself would love those punky vibes!
Your mini version of the day of indolence and pub-hop sounds perfect. It must have been wonderful to do something verging on the old normal with your friends!
Your brunch outfit is gorgeous too, and I'm not surprised you are complemented on that embroidered coat whenever you're wearing it.
Sunday's outfit is very Classy (with capital "C") and surely that Welsh wool cape is worth having a June-uary day for.
Love that skirt you found (yay for pockets!) and I'm swooning over that Enid Collins back. What a wonderful find! xxx

    1. Thank you so much, Ann, and yes, I had to wear it right away! I loved the outfit, and I hope Dame Viv would appreciate it too.

Our mini-Day of Indolence was a lot of fun - it was so good to be with our friends again. Thank you - the embroidered coat is amazing in person.

Thank you! I like sneaking in a non-seasonal wearing of a cape in June. What a great score on the bag, eh?

  11. First off, I am IN LOVE with your bad-ass rock star outfit - the t-shirt, skirt and boots are PUUUUUURFECT together. You have had amazing luck finding fab skirts - the Carven one is very cool too.

I have about half a dozen Enid Collins bags that I found at thrift and vintage stores almost 30 years ago and have kept. Some of them are missing a few jewels and I display them on my kitchen wall. They are quite collectable now as it's unusual to find one "out in the wild".

    1. Along with Nancy, you're my other rock & roller friend, Shelley, and I'm so glad you approve. :) The Carven one is a bit tight, but I had to have it!

Oh, how awesome! I didn't see anything wrong with mine - no missing stones. That's so fun that you display them on the wall - that's a great idea! I just learned about Collins recently from that NY Times article, so have had my eyes peeled.

  12. Yessss, this was such a fun post to read! So much enjoyment of all of you who you included in the post, delight in your celebrating, indulging, indolence and thrifting! And while I wasn’t a fan of the Vivienne Westwood skirt at first glance in your prior post, it is styled oh so perfectly for this outing. I cannot imagine the skirt being worn any other way.

Appreciating all the outfits you wore and items you purchased. LOVE that you four had a dance party chez vous. And the copyrighted patterned bag is an art piece as well as a functional one.

Yeehah for wonderful celebratory weekends and days off!

Thank you - I love dancing and party music, and we all got our groove on. Hooray for vacations!

  13. What a weekend! It's almost like normal times!!
What a shame about the weather but you've captured the sunshine with your splashes of yellow.
The Viv skirt is perfect with the band tee, moto jacket and fabularse boots.
The embroidered jacket is a triumph and I always love seeing the Welsh Wool cape even if it is June and you should be in a strappy something!
Several of my friends collect those Enid Collins bags, I recognised what it was immediately!
    I loved this post! xxx
