Toile Tiers and Talking to Lucy

Hello, my friends! I had a special Zoom call date today, so after my grocery shop and my Mental Health Walk, I dug in my closet for something special to wear.
That glowing ball in the sky felt so good today - we're in for some temps in the mid- to high-20s. Summer weather! Break out the flowy clothes!

  • Toile dress - PartTwo, consignment; last worn here in August 2020
  • Shoes - Wonders, consignment; last seen here in April

I'm having fun playing with my new haircut - it's less a mullet and more of an aggressive shag, but I like it.
I also like this wonderful tiered toile-patterned dress.

All those tiers! It's ruffle-licious!
I like to shake up my usual silhouettes - I am a fan of the flapper-ish up-and-down styling of waist-less dresses. My red dress (when not belted) is also like this.

It's a comfortable non-constrictive style.
This is a total jammy dress - one and done!

The stuff:
I don't feel properly dressed up without my shoes, even if I'm sitting a chair for a Zoom call. These are awesomely comfy, but still give me some height. I clomped around the house in these.

  • Cage cuff - Bauxo
  • Filigree cuff - St. Paul's Cathedral gift shop
  • Shield ring - Nine West
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Silver earrings (not shown) - consignment
  • Brooch - Pastelli, vintage 60s, Grandma S?

I took my "stuff" picture while I was still wearing the dress, and I didn't feel like taking my brooch off and then fussing with it again. I also forgot to photograph my earrings - oops!
It's by Pastelli and belonged to my Gram (Mom's mom). It's from around 1963 - and how do I know that?

From this blog post (here, link 'cause I love), which notes that Pastelli started advertising their brooches in 1963...
And there's my brooch, second one from the bottom! Those are some, um...interesting make-up and hair choices, aren't they, hee hee?

Vizzini, aren't you impressed with my detective skills?
"Are you interrupting my nap again, Woman?"

Yes, I am!

So, my Zoom call today was with the FABULOUS Lucy Bertoldi of Confessions of a Montreal Styling Diva.
We have a SUPER-COOL SECRET COLLABORATION coming up! I'll let y'all know about it when it happens (stay tuned!), but you should all check Lucy out anyway - we discovered very quickly that we have a large style/taste overlap - especially if you enjoy bright colours and vintage clothes.

I was dancing with joy when we finished our call - I think we could have kept on chatting for another hour! It's so much fun talking fashion with someone who shares your passion.
Gettin' my 80s dancing on, baby!

Come on, Vizzini, dance with me!
"I'll pass."

Your loss!

  4. Is that the old one eyed squint that Vizzini is giving you?

I love the floaty layers of your new jammy dress and the pin is so pretty. Just the right touch.

I did a brief perusal of Lucy's site and will be going back to dig deeper. Looking forward to seeing what the two of you are cooking up :)

  5. Your ruffle-tastic dress is gorgeous, Sheila, and just perfect for staying cool on those first Summer days. And it just invites shimmying and dancing, doesn't it. I love that picture of your dancing. How wonderful to have your Gram's brooch, and I'm duly impressed with your detective skills, even if Vizzini isn't.
Can't wait to see your collaboration with Lucy, whose blog I really need to check out! xxx

    1. Isn't it pretty, Ann? I hope I'll get another wear out of it this summer, but I have so many dresses! I know you're familiar with this "problem"! :)

I love digging around and learning the history of my pieces, especially the ones from my relatives.

I'm so excited - we're doing a podcast! You'll get to listen to me ramble, hee hee.

  8. Yes yes, the perfect, easy to style, versatile jammy dress! And I love the pizzazz of your new hair style, it is as vivacious as so many of your outfits! As for the Pastelli hair style, adverts do have a tendency to go over the top! I used to enjoy making collages from the magazines my Mom read in the 60s, and recall thinking “who would actually do their hair like this!” or “do real people dress like this?” Always interesting how fashion can be a marker of a culture at a point in time.

    Happy Weekend and Summer Solstice!

    1. You know I love my jammy dresses, Laurie! This is one of my faves, for sure.

Aw, thank you! It's fun having a new style.

Isn't that ad funny? I'm sure there were women who did their hair and make-up like this!

  9. What a stunning dress! So summery, elegant, and rife with a sense of 1920s attire.

PS: I'm all for a vampy, smoky, heavy eye makeup look (and rock them often myself), but that mid-century mannequin has taken thing a step too OTT for me (lol!).

    1. Thank you so much, Autumn! I do love that 1920s flapper style and this dress falls right in that sweet spot for me.

I agree! I love a smoky eye, but she's got a full forest fire going on there!

  10. That dress is absolutely gorgeous. There is something so comfortable but at the same time elegant about the 1920ties dress silhouette...and we're in 2020ties so why not repeat the history a bit? You do look stunning in that dress. So glad you enjoyed your zoom call and are planning a collab with a fellow blogger. I'm sure it will be fun.

Th Pastelli brooch is gorgeous. I actually sewed a brooch today. The ad is lovely, I like the play of dark and light in that photograph. You know what the hairdo and even the make up makes me think of- The Swan Lake ballet!

    1. Yes, I agree, Ivana - I love that 1920s flapper-ish silhouette and have a few dresses/skirts that fall into that category. Thanks so much! I'm excited to see what Lucy posts.

I love it too - it's so soothing to wear jewelry that belonged to my relatives. Oh, you are so right - it's a very Swan Lake kind of vibe, isn't it?
