Slow Fashion Season; Four Snakes, FIT Museum Designers, and a Case of Flop-Butt

Hello, my friends! Vacation day tomorrow, and we are ending this week with a bang, but first, a little word about second-hand shopping, which you KNOW I am a huge fan of.

There's this thing, called Slow Fashion Season* (read about it here at Vix's blog, and she says it way better than me, so just go read it and I'll wait...done? Okay.). I am participating! I commit to not buying any clothing retail at all, between June 21st and September 21st. This will be pretty painless for me, although I do shop retail from time to time.
*All links 'cause I love!

If you are interested in signing up, just enter your email at the link above and take part. Shop your closet, and shop thrift stores/op-shops/chazzas/consignment/resale, whatever it's called where you are, and...just see how it goes. Try it! Maybe you'll like it.

Okay, off my high horse now. Game on! Today's outfit features two designers in the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
I think of this as my "Cinderella's rags" dress.

  • Dress - vintage Kenzo, consignment; last worn here (2nd outfit)in March with boots and a turtleneck
  • Shoes - Lucky Brand, consignment, Powell River; last seen here in September 2018 with Dries and lemon
  • Coat (below) - Lord &; Taylor, thrifted; last seen here last weekend

It has a very architectural feel, but it also looks like I've sat too close to the fire a few times.
The past two times I've worn it have been with tights and since the lining of the dress is a fine woven cotton, I had extreme clinging issues. I am happy to report that it was amazing with bare legs - very swooshy and billowed when I went down the stairs. Whee!

So, the FIT Museum! I have read this book cover-to-cover and while it is not the best book - every bit of text is in English/French/German, which takes up a lot of space, and not enough pictures! - it's another educational book in my fashion library.
Source (linking 'cause I love!)

When I was reading it, I realized I have thrifted or found on consignment a bunch of the designers in it, so I thought it would be fun to show you the pictures in the book when I wear my chi-chi designer things. Cool, right?

Here are the Kenzo pages:
(Ooh, look at me, I figured out how to do collages!)

I love the structure of these and I'm drooling over that floral dress on the lower right. My dress has all kinds of interest folds and tucks in it, more in the vein of the lower left dress.
I paid $68.00 for it on consignment (that means that the owner gets a percentage when the garment sells).

If you could find something this awesome by Kenzo retail, it would cost several hundred dollars (300+ Euros).
It took time to find it - I spent about an hour and a half in the store going through all the stuff there and trying on a million things - but it was worth it.

Coated - very windy today!
The coat was bought for $19.99 at Flavour Upstairs a few years ago; I call it thrift, but is a resale shop (the owner can get less cash or a higher store credit up-front). I've worn it over 100 times, easily.

The stuff:
This is my fourth wearing of these shoes, which I bought in a consignment store in Powell River last summer for $38.00. Love them! Clomp, clomp, clomp.

Snaky bling:
There's my other designer piece: that Fendi "guitar" belt. I bought it a few years ago for $19.99 at the WIN thrift store.

  • Belt - Fendi, thrifted
  • Bracelet - Whiting & Davis, vintage 80s, vintage fair
  • Snake earrings and barrette - Red Sky (first wearing of the barrette - purchased here for $14.00)

The earrings and barrette are both locally-made - no fast fashion, mass-manufacture there - and I bought them at local shop Luna Collective.

My colleagues and WW folks were enamoured of all my snakes - four of them in one outfit. I do like to go overboard on a theme.

Oh, and here's the Fendi pages from my book:
Do you remember all the knock-offs of that bag in the late 90s/early 00s? That skirt and top in the lower left are amazing.

And now, I shall leave you with a kitty who has a case of flop-butt. It was hot last night and Vizzini sprawled out on our enclosed deck.
"And I love it."

Vizzini is a really active cat...except when it's hot out. Then he's very floppy.
"Must get more heat from these tiles."

He's totally used to me taking pictures of him.
"It's so hard being famous."

He flopped out here for hours.
"I have to conserve my energy for napping later."

I am off tomorrow, so have a wonderful weekend, my friends! I will be back soon to regale you with tales of adventure!

  1. Monsieur Vizzini has such a beautiful, shiny coat. Any special products you use? Maybe could be used by us ladies also? Bon Nuit

    1. For Vizzini? Nope, he gets a can of wet food a day, 6 tiny cat treats a night, and regular brushings, that's it.

  2. Yay! Thanks for sharing Slow Fashion Week, since I last looked last night there's now almost 8000 participants. How exciting! Thank you so much for the shout-out.
I remember not being that struck on your Kenzo dress when you photographed it on a hanger but I absolutely love it on you - drooling over those shoes, too!
Those Taschen books are great, aren't they?
Big love to Vizzini, the handsome beast.
Have a fantastic weekend, Sheila! xx

    1. Thank you for bringing it to our attention, Vix! That is so exciting that people are signing up.

I know! You have to try these things on, right?

I have never seen a Taschen book before, but I'll be looking for them now.

Happy weekend to you, my dear!

  3. I signed up for Slow Fashion Week too, and will be spreading the news in tomorrow's post. Like Vix, I wasn't sure about your Cinderella dress until I saw it on you. I always love seeing your Fendi belt too. Aren't you a classy girl? I'll keep an eye out for that book, those Taschen books often turn up in the charity shops here. I agree the three language text can be a bit annoying though. Phoebe says meow to Vizzini! Have the greatest of weekends, Sheila! xxx

    1. Cool, good for you, Ann! It's funny how some clothes can just look awful or dubious on the hanger and then look amazing on. I'm so classy I'm Klassy! Ha!

I didn't know that the 3-languages were a thing for that publishing company - I didn't mind it (I can read French), but I'd have liked more pictures and more text about each designer.

Happy weekend to you and Phoebe!

  4. That Kenzo is beautiful. I bet it's really interesting up close too.

Poor old Vizzini. At least as a cat no-one expects him to go to work.

  5. Ooo, I love a good fashion book. And you've got such a great eye for spotting designer pieces in second hand stores! I read about the Slow Fashion cause on Vix's blog. I'm thinking I might join in on it too. X

  7. I love that Cinderella dress and sandals are fab. What a brilliant book; I rarely find fashion books in charity shops although I have begun looking...

All Vizinni needs is a bikini!

    Have a great weekend.

    1. Oh, I paid for this one new (using a gift card) - it was pricey! Ha, Vizzini in a bikini would be hilarious.

      Happy weekend to you, Vronni!

  8. What a stunning outfit Sheila.
I came across a cactus print Kenzo dress but thought it was too expensive at 30.00 USD.... now I can only wonder.

    1. Thanks, Lorena! I think that depends on how old it is, but Kenzo is pretty desired by "name" collectors. I never see it really cheap here.

  9. Sending head and chin scritches to the floppy kitty. I really like that dress, expecially with the Fendi belt. I would love to find a vintage piece of Kenzo, like those wonky sweater/sweatshirts he did in the 80's.

  11. Oh gawd, isn't it just the way that you commit to Slow Fashion and then buy your concert tee! That's exactly what I'm like! I've been posting on Instagram lately about keeping it green fashion-wise and then I go off to London and have a right old spend up.

    1. I know! But I won't feel guilty about it - I do my part with second-hand shopping all the time, and have for years! Thanks so much, my dear!
