The Day of Indolence: Weird Adidas, Many Friends and Venues, and a Few Finds

Welcome back, my friends! If you've been reading my blog for a while (I've been posting for over 15 years!), then you know that around this time of year, we celebrate L's birthday with the Annual Day of Indolence! You can join us in our adventures here last year (there is also a listing of the previous DOIs at that link, if you are inclined to delve back even further).

We encourage our friends to take the day off work, and join us for breakfast followed by doing whatever happens to strike our fancy - no plans, no schedules, and lots of day-drinking and shenanigans. I always try to slip a bit of shopping in there, and that happened this year too.
I always push the envelope when dressing for a DOI. I need comfy shoes, things I can sit and eat in, and I want to look super-funky!

  • Jacket - Adidas, thrifted; first seen here in March with pink and grey sweatshirt
  • Shirt - Denver Hayes, consignment; last worn here in May under Moo Marimekko
  • Tulle skirt - Adidas, consignment; last seen here in May under a denim emoji dress
  • Tule underskirt - Luc Fontaine, thrifted; first worn here (3rd outfit) in May under an embroidered dress
  • Boots - Doc Martens, consignment; last seen here in March for a Mom-Day Adventure at the HCP

I also enjoyed showing off some of my "Weird Adidas" collection to my friends.
After a week of mid-20s temps and hot sun, we woke up to...grey and drizzly rain. Gah! Of course, the day we spend out and about is cloudy! Ah, well. If that is the worst thing I can complain about, then my life is pretty good!

I took the jacket off once or twice, when I overheated from walking.
I layered my new-er floofy underskirt (technical term, heh) under the sheer tulle Adidas skirt - see the stripes?

The second skirt gave me a lot more coverage, but also still left the skirt sheer.
I wore sheer grey tights (and socks!) for extra warmth.

I had tons of compliments on my look from folks in the various pubs and on the street.
And my feet were happy all day too.

Incognito. I wear my sunglasses, even in the rain.
I wore my silk scarf for extra neck coverage, but ended up doing the Movie Star Wrap multiple times to keep my hair from frizzing out from the humidity and rain.

Accoutrements:
This bag got a lot of use this week!

  • Purse - Roots 73, consignment
  • Silk scarf - fake Louis (Lewis!) Vuitton, thrifted

The stuff:
I'd banged some toes on a piece of furniture the other night, so needed some wide-toed shoes to accommodate the swelling (much better now!). These were awesome.

  • Steel cuff - thrifted
  • Crystal hearts bracelet - Juicy Couture, consignment
  • Silver/crystal ring - Soul Flower
  • F@#! Swear rings - Wendy Brandes
  • Wooden cat pin - consignment
  • Porcelain cat earrings - Winnie Tam

We started our day at the Ruby, where Nick and Casey had already arrived. L and Nick had the drink special with their breakfast, some sort of bourbon concoction.
L is wearing a new-to-him blazer that I bought for $5.00 at Upcycle Vintage. The blazer itself is by Jack Fraser Menswear (a long-defunct menswear store that closed in the 90s), with the guitar head patterned fabric added by a seamstress from Duncan (here on the island).

Randall arrived shortly after, looking very indolent!
I love the Creem magazine tee ("Boy Howdy!" says the bottle, link about them here - all links in this post 'cause I love). L is wearing his Margarita Villains roller derby shirt.

Chris and Ron joined us.
Alison appeared in the late afternoon, once she got off work - unfortunately, Caro couldn't make it.

Casey, longtime pal (I've known him and Nick slightly longer than I've known L).
What's that on the wall beside you, Case?

L's cowboy hat and Casey's chapeau...
Hanging from a set of moose antlers.

Me and Casey and Chris.
My boys!

Where to next, kids?
To the Garrick's Head Pub!

We strolled up Government Street, where I noticed a detail on this old c. 1890s building.
There's a tree growing on the ledge! The cluster ball lights on the bottom left are one of those things Victoria is known for.

Inside the Garrick's Head, in our "usual" table, watching all the people walk by.
Chris and Nick. I see we're all fortified with beers!

Hey, my boys! Give me a smile!
Peace out from Casey, Randall, L, Chris and Nick, from left going clockwise.

I got bored around this time, so I went for a quick wander down to Bastion Square and said hi to coworker Wilma who was manning her/her husband Dave's booth (he sells photography, link here). I also popped down to Upcycle Vintage (only a block from the Garrick's) and found this amazing jacket.
It's upcycled, so is a combination of a c. 1990s top and a cheap black Garage jean jacket.

You know I can't resist all this shiny bling and gewgaws!
The gold stretchy fabric is classic 90s. She's opened up the upper back, the mid-back and the sleeves with, and added gold ragged stitching as edging - all done by hand.

That gold edging is a nice detail on the side pockets.
A lot of work went into this!

I like the tag.
"What's my origin story?" by Kelsey T.

This was half-price, at $88.00 - it's still pricey, but I also know that all that handiwork takes time and time isn't free!
It says, "A glistening gold fabric and a denim jacket from two different homes join together - alongside a few details - to become a jacket fit for a glam rockstar!" Yup, glam rockstar, that's me! @kelstitch, thank you for this cool garment! Her/their Insta here.

Time to move on!
One last look at the Garrick's Head - hi, Casey and Chris! - before we go to the next stop.

Quazar's Video Game Arcade!
It's off Trounce Alley, down the stairs, below the street. From left: L, Casey, Nick and Randall (taking a pic of me).

They have all kinds of pinball and arcade games, including classics - about them here
Casey's on some sort of Jurassic Park game, and L and Chris are on the Led Zeppelin one.

Nick and Ronnie.
I became severely bored at this point - this stop was totally NOT my jam - so I popped into a store in Trounce Alley.

Pom-Pom Boutique is a mix of new and some vintage jewelry (FB link here - I like the video of the person dancing in Trounce Alley).
I spotted this 1970s brooch on a display and grabbed it.

I like the abstract design and enamel.
A nice rusty brown - the texture is under the enamel.

I spy a signature! I know this one, de Passille-Sylvestre.
I used to have a giant pendant by them (last worn here a year ago), that I passed along at my last clothing giveaway.

I paid $10 for the pendant - the brooch was slightly more at $36.00 but it's in very good condition.
About the artists here (you may need to translate to English) - this is from the 1970s, and falls under the Brutalist category.

After our brief dalliance at Quazar's, we needed more fortifications - to the Drake!
We've been here before, but they only serve beers and ciders, and not very much food.

Greg joined us!
Good to see you, man!

Yvonne finally pried herself away from work.
Good to see you too, darlin'! Screw that work stuff - it's Friday, come party with your favourite people!

We hung out at the Drake for a round, then ventured down to Craft Brewery.
Love that classic Mustang. Chris and Randall in front of me.

While we stood around, waiting to see if Craft was willing to seat a party of 9 people, we popped into the Swift, a "good time tasting room", next door.
Oh, my, I'm having flashbacks to my childhood! Those chairs!

It's set up like a very Klassy lounge area, with all kinds of retro-vintage accessories.
Craft was disinclined to seat us, so we said, "Screw it! Let's go to Swans!"

And so we did!
Swans has upgraded from the old days (late 90s to early 00s) when we used to come here every Friday night - we were regulars, skipping the line, in the know with Eddie the old manager. We even had "our spot" at the bar, saved for us - our beers were always waiting, freshly tapped when we walked in.

After a quick dinner - how the hours fly by! - I walked to my hair appointment.
There's my gal, Kaitlyn! Thank you for the awesome haircut, honey!

I joined the crew back at Swans after my cut, and then we ambled over to the Artemis Whisky Bar, underneath Market Square (link here).
They have a secret door bookcase at the bottom of the stairs. The trigger (a book titled "Artemis") was way too easy. I guess it keeps out the riff-raff, heh heh.

It was very dark - phone-lights were activated for reading the menu.
Ha ha! L and Ronnie, looking spooky! I see Ali on the far left.

I wandered around the place, and took a pic of their robot mascot, "ARty" who was in the DJ booth.
By this time, it was getting late, and mindful of a hungry kitty at home, it was time to wrap up.

One last stop in the loo!
"This girl has solutions!" it says in the mirror.

And home we went.

I hope you enjoyed our little jaunt in downtown - it was a blast hanging out with our pals. To the Family We Choose - huzzah! Thanks for being there.

  1. The question really is, did you miss me?!!!! I have not been keeping up at all with any blogs for a while. But it was so fun to read about this year’s Day of Indolence! Great day for me to return to the world of Ephemera.

One reason I stopped reading for a while was trying to keep my personal time focused on the rose skirt project. That blouse you wore for L’s special day will go perfectly with it, I think! I am determined to have it done in the next week or so. I’ll be in touch….

  2. That sounds like a wonderful and busy day! We spend last Tuesday the hole day with friends as one of us got married. I love to spend time with them. People you love are precious. Of course.... love that denim jacket. Black and gold is my favourite colour combination.

  4. I loved tagging along with you, L and the gang!
How cool is the Swift? The decor is so groovy and check the pair of you out, too. The Adidas skirt is wild and L's jacket is amazing.
Good for you for wandering off for a bit of a shop during the games stop, they do nothing for me either even though they're great to look at. xxx

    1. I could imagine you there, Vix! I would have liked to hang at the Swift, but our group was a little large and getting hungry and they don't do food. I always wander off to buy something - it's part of my day.
