Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Pleather and Paisley; Brunch and Vet in Velvet; Rockin' Amethyst and Amber Winesday

Welcome back, my friends! Pull up a chair, grab a cup of something yummy, and settle in as we look at outfits.

I've got the new pleather culottes for you, plus my brunch outfit and a trip to the vet for Vizzini, followed by Winesday. And today's the Oscars, and I plan to watch ALL the red carpet, so let's get this going!

Funky Friday's outfit.
New things need to go with old things! I had to wear these culottes right away, and why not wear them with a top that is 50 years old?

  • Shirt - Pant-Man, vintage 70s, thrifted; last worn here in March 2022 with a blue vest
  • Culottes - Zara, consignment; purchased here for $22.50
  • Shoes - Hispanitas; last seen here in December for a Mom-Day at Beacon Hill Park
  • Coat (below) - Mallia, consignment; last worn here in February

This is a double-knit polyester shirt from the 70s that I thrifted from Flavour Upstairs back in 2019 for $19.99. This is its 6th wearing.
I hadn't worn it in close to a year, but I still like the paisley pattern - it's a good neutral...for me!

The culottes were excellent, very comfortable.
I like the lower-sitting waist, and the deep pockets.

I did check out the rear view before I got them. No one wants a saggy bum!
No sagging here!

It's Friday, hooray!
It rained in the morning and then was just cold and dry on the way home.

Accoutrements:
It's slightly too warm for this hat and scarf now.

  • Fur scarf - thrifted
  • Hat - M&S, consignment, Powell River
  • Gloves - Aldo, consignment

I'll be swapping over my Accoutrements for spring soon.

The stuff:
These shoes have gotten much more comfortable over the years.

Black and metal bling:
Some favourites.

  • Necklace - Stella & Dot, thrifted
  • Collar points - vintage 80s, consignment
  • Fang bangle - Alexis Bittar, consignment, Sidney
  • Open bangle/earrings - Alexis Bittar, consignment, gift from L
  • Crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Smoky topaz ring - Anneli Neumann, Sweden, vintage mall

I moved where I store my collar points, as they were "out of sight, out of mind" for me in my vintage jewelry box.

I did a close-up for you so you could see how they look attached to the collar.
I showed them to one of my younger colleagues and regaled her with tales of button-covers as well. "Yeah, we really liked to embellish our clothes in the 80s/90s!"

After a quiet evening of board games on Friday night, L and I headed out for an early breakfast at the Ruby with Nick, followed by grocery shopping.
Getting in a wearing of this massive velvet vest, plus my McQ mini.

  • Vest - Phool, vintage 90s, consignment; last worn here (3rd outfit) by L for his Hallowe'en costume as Galileo in October 2022
  • Cashmere sweater - Prada, consignment; last seen here in February with a new kimono topper
  • Skirt - McQ by Alexander McQueen, 2013, consignment; last worn here in January 2022 for a Winesday in the park (I don't miss those!)
  • Boots - Matisse, consignment; last seen here a couple of weeks ago in March

I look a bit ruffled here. I hate rushing in the morning.
This mini-skirt is snug on me, so I tend to wear it with things where I can hide it a bit.

And can you believe I haven't worn this vest yet this season? Tsk!
It does require some pre-planning, though. You can't just throw it on over anything.

Without the vest, although I never took it off.
Thick fleece-lined tights for clambering in and out of Vlad the Jaguar convertible. That car needs handles!

All done up. It was a gloomy but warmer day with highs of a balmy 8 degrees!
The vest is super-snuggly, and long gauntlet gloves kept my arms warm while we waited to be seated at the Ruby.

Accoutrements:
I moved my thinner "dress" gloves and gauntlets to a less hidden-away location so that they can lay flat and I can see them. Oh yeah, I forgot about these!

  • Purse - Ted Lapidus, vintage 90s, vintage fair
  • Fur scarf - thrifted
  • Gauntlets - vintage 1940s, consignment

The stuff:
Tall boots always help mini-skirts feel less short.

Green and brown bling:
I'm feeling the allure of long dangly necklaces lately.

  • Snake bracelet - vintage 1930s, antique store, Sidney
  • Bangle - consignment
  • Brass ring - vintage mall
  • Wooden ring - Dots
  • Amber/silver ring - antique store, Sidney
  • Necklace - Plum, c 2007
  • Earrings - consignment, Powell River

I picked up my forgotten hat at the Velvet Crease on the way home, and then we rested a bit before jamming Vizzini into his cat carrier for a check-up at the vet.
I took off some of my jewelry (the bracelets and rings) and changed into my stretchy knit "fin" skirt in preparation for cat-wrangling.

  • Skirt - TKStyle, thrifted; last worn here in December 2022 for an outing with Mom

We'll have to wait a few days for Vizz's bloodwork to come back, and have to somehow get some of his urine (we have special cat-sand and instructions) and drop it off, but he was a very good boy. He hid under a towel and let the vet and techs do their jobs without a fight. He was quickly back to his old self when we got him home again. No pics as I have been shunned, as the person who shoves him into the cat-carrier.

Those visits are stressful for us humans too, so it was a relief for L and I to be able to soothe ourselves in the company of our friends. L had Musical Appreciation Night (aka MANday) and my gals and I gathered at Cat's for Winesday.
I always want to be comfy enough to lounge on the floor. Winesday is about chilling out!

  • Silk blouse - J. Crew, consignment; purchased here for $20.00
  • Jeans - Wilfred, consignment; first worn here (2nd outfit) in January with the above Prada sweater!
  • Boots - Mamzelle, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit) for another Winesday in November 2022
  • Coat (below) - Halston, vintage 70s, consignment, Sidney; last worn here last week

I've been watching the excellent documentary series "Women Who Rock" directed by Jessica Hopper, who wrote "The First Collection of Criticism By a Living Female Rock Critic," which both L and I have read (thanks, Cat!). Link to the series here and the book here, all links 'cause I love.
And I've been feeling like a rocker! I put on some Heart ("Little Queen") last night after watching the 2nd episode in the 4-part series.

This oversized silk blouse is perfect for that louche rockstar look. I have a black cami underneath.
The jeans are wide legged, thick and soft.

Good rear view!
Always important.

The first time I wore the jeans, I did this exact mix of scarf, gloves and coat.
I do love a good formula. I skipped the purple hat this time, though.

Done up and snuggly warm.
I walked to and from Cat's, after a long night of food, laughter, tears and love, and crashed into bed at 3am (stupid time change).

Accoutrements:
The purse was already out and ready to go.

  • Purse - Ted Lapidus, vintage 90s, vintage fair
  • Scarf - fake Coach, thrifted
  • Gloves - vintage, consignment

The stuff:
These boots worked great with the jeans.

Mixed bling:
I mixed metals and colours, from amethyst to amber.

  • Belt - Notes du Nord, thrifted
  • Shark cuff - Tom Binns, 2012, consignment
  • Leather/chain bracelet - thrifted
  • Gold chain - Dad's
  • Amethyst/silver ring - vintage mall
  • Amethyst/gold/silver ring - gift from Mom & Dad, c. 1984
  • Amethyst/gold ring - Frances Jewelers, Dad's, c. 1965
  • Amber necklace - vintage mall, gift from L
  • Amethyst crystal pendant - gift from Mom & Dad, c. 1992
  • Gold hoop earrings (not shown) - gift from L, 2002

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I'm off to goggle at Oscar fashion!

  2. I absolutely love how you styled those culottes, they look absolutely amazing on you!
Those collar points couldn't be more 80s if they tried! You're so right, embellishing our clothes definitely was a thing back then. I remember having several bow/flower clips to embellish a plain pair of shoes. Those were the days!
I'm swooning over the delicious colour mix of Saturday's breakfast/grocery shopping outfit. That massive velvet vest is looking particularly yummy.
Loving the groovy jeans in your final outfit, they look absolutely perfect with the oversized blouse. I do wish my rear view was as fabulous as yours :-))
Keeping my fingers crossed for the result of Vizzini's bloods! xxx

    1. Aw, thanks, Ann! Oh, I also had those shoe-clips - and dress clips for the back of the big baggy granny dresses too!

Fingers crossed that our little guy is stable.

  3. My favorite is the Hispanitas loafers, and the way you wore them with a skirt. I'm taking notes!
And OMG, that faux Coach scarf--I know that pattern! I became obsessed with it in (checks blog) 2005. I was in a massive purple and brown phase at the time and am happy to say that I bought the bag and carried it with great joy, even though it wasn't big enough and hand-held bags make me a little crazy. But a scarf is better. Things don't fall out of a scarf. (I don't mean to spam, but if you're curious, there's a picture here: https://tinyurl.com/yc6rcn5r)

    1. That's not a skirt - it's culottes, Poppy! Thank you!

Yes, I remember that Coach colourway too (as well as blue) - sounds like the right era. Enjoyed your post - glad you got the bag. Do you still have it?

    2. Thanks, Sheila! No, I donated the bag to a charity event a friend was running called "Handbags and Halos." Attendees were asked to donate a gently-used designer bag for the Brown Elephant, a legendary thrift shop whose proceeds benefit the Howard Brown Health Center here in Chicago. So it was for a good cause. I really felt like I won a halo when I donated it! But I so seldom wear brown now that it would be gathering dust in my closet.

    3. That sounds like the perfect way to re-home it, Poppy! I like donating my expensive stuff too - I always give away to friends and coworkers first, then off to charity it goes. Good to move along the stuff that isn't "you" anymore.

  4. Another fab weekend - apart from the cat wrangling of course! Loved all your outfits and the wonderful accoutrements and jewellery. I think my favourite was the Winesday one; the silky blouse and patterned jeans combo - brilliant!

I'd heard of collar points before and knew what they were but the covered buttons were new to me! I had young children in the 1980s and no money so fashion/style was at the top of my agenda and in the 1990s I was going through a divorce and being a single mum so must have missed this trend!

Hope the news from Vizzini's bloods is good.

    1. Cat-wrangling is never fun! Thank you, Vronni! Ha, I totally get that fashion went by the wayside while you were a young mum!

Thank you, will let y'all know when we hear.

  5. All red carpet worthy outfits, but my favourite has to be the second one....just gorgeous! Love the vintage Phool and those earthy tones are stunning! x

  6. Cat wrangling, I remember it well, I hope all's good with the little man!
That paisley shirt, Halston coat and the Phool waistcoat are amongst some of my favourite things of yours. I loved that we embellished clothes back in the 1980s, the last decade when individually was embraced and we didn't all want to have the same hair, eyebrows and clothes. xxx

    1. Same here, Vix. We should hear soon.

They are amazing pieces - I find it hard to let go of good vintage! I so agree - I wish people would embrace expressing themselves more!

  7. I really like how you styled the culottes and I always love that green vest on you !I like both skirts with it :) The jeans at the end are so fun - I know that you have had fashion projects with jackets and dresses and bags (love mine!) and shoes - have you ever drawn on a pair of jeans? They are a lovely print but it made me wonder if you have ever that! :)
