Blasted Buttons, Plus More Copper

I did a bunch of mending and repairs over the weekend, including finding a new button for this recently-thrifted plaid skirt.
And many of you were enthusiastic about seeing it right away, so there you go.

  • Leather jacket (without lining) - Boss by Hugo Boss, consignment: last worn here earlier this month for a Mom-Day at Finnerty Gardens
  • Sweater - Intimates, vintage 1960s, thrifted; last seen here in December 2022 with orange, copper and sequins
  • Skirt - Brooks Brothers, thrifted; purchased here for $9.50
  • Shoes - Big Presence Desmond, Fluevog; last worn here (3rd outfit) in September 2022 for Vero's birthday party

I tend to steer clear of patterns that are only two colours because they really limit what you can mix with them.
I wore...blue and brown with my $9.50 woven-in-England wool skirt.

Shocker.
It's a lovely skirt, which is to be expected, as every piece of Brooks Brothers I've ever owned has been beautiful quality.

I didn't take the jacket off at all, but I couldn't toss these pics.
"Isn't this the point? Pictures of me?"

This is a vintage sweater, likely older than me (so, over 55). They don't make 'em like this anymore!

I have at least 3 cobalt pullover sweaters - I can't resist them.
"You know what else you can't resist? Me!"

You can see how nice the skirt fits in these pics. I really wanted to love it...

Oops, forgot to take my outerwear pic until I was almost ready to walk out the door!
I get so discombobulated on Mondays.

  • Shoes - Geox, consignment

Accoutrements:
I snagged L's vintage silk fringed scarf from the Scarf CD Shelf.

  • Scarf - vintage, thrifted - borrowed from L
  • Gloves - Parkhurst

The stuff:
I was flabbergasted to see that I haven't worn these shoes since September?! Outrageous! I do keep them out all year round.

Copper bling:
More of my copper collection.

  • Necklace - vintage 1960s, consignment
  • Wide mesh bracelet/skinny link/hinged cuff bracelets - all Renoir, vintage 50s, either thrifted or vintage fairs
  • Earrings - vintage expo
  • Silver/sodalite ring - Scotland, 1995
  • Copper ring - consignment
  • Shiny copper ring - Glee

As I was about to leave the house this morning, I reached down to pick up Vizzini for a final cuddle and POW! ZIP! two of the buttons flew off the skirt. I cursed and crawled on my knees to dig them out from under the bed, and quickly grabbed a needle and spool of navy thread and tossed the blasted buttons into my bag. I grumbled all the way to work, as I held the suddenly VERY high side slit closed. I quickly sewed both buttons on at my desk first thing.
The bottom button is from my stash and replaces the missing button - I only had this one, which is a drag, as it's nicer than the originals.

One of my repair/mend missions was to touch up the flaked black paint on the original buttons with permanent black marker. It worked...but rubbed off, although it's slightly less flaky-looking than previously.

Grievances:
  • The fabric stretched out around the buttons and didn't lay flat.
  • There's no reason for this to be a real wrap skirt. Sew the damn front closed and put in a hidden side zip (and pockets, while you're at it!).
  • Flaky paint on the buttons.
  • Limited colours for matching.
  • 3/8 buttons missing or off within first wearing.

This skirt hit its limit with me today, so it's off to the giveaway pile. Good riddance!

  1. Clothes rage! I hate it when something you've found that you're so excited about wearing goes wrong. The skirt looks fabulous with the vintage jumper and the leather jacket but something that causes so much trouble doesn't deserve a place in your wardrobe. Be gone, damned skirt! xxx

    1. Ah well, the money went to a good cause! I'm glad I tested it out before packing it away for the season, anyway. Begone! Thanks, Vix!

  2. Oh, I do hate it when something like this happens! I guess you can't win them all, so good riddance to the skirt. It might be quality but you own far nicer ones anyway. I do keep a needle and some generic spools of thread in my desk for those quick sewing fixes by the way! xxx

    1. It's disappointing, for sure, Ann. I agree, I do have nicer ones. I should probably keep a sewing kit in my desk, good idea!

  3. The outfit is relatively calm save for the top and those bold super blue shoes, so off with the skirt and have an end to it! When an item requires more work or workarounds then the delight it brings being worn, it’s time to part ways.

Harkening back to a comment you made quite awhile ago about your taste changing, recently I’ve noticed the same with me. My taste and body are no longer comfortable in my winter pants. I have found myself admiring Robin’s pants and, with his assistance sharing the link, yesterday ordered a pair for myself in a woman’s cut. We shall see…

    Cheers,
    Laurie

    1. Yes, it's pretty sedate for me, but I like a plain(er) outfit to show off my copper. I adore the shoes.

Oh, good for you! It can be hard to shift one's mindset out of a style or look that we identify as "us" - but it's good to change and evolve. We're never the same person, so why should our clothes be the same. Thanks, Laurie!

  4. I have always loved Brooks Brothers, back when they were my source for "Dress for Success" suits in tropical weight wool, and now because I discovered that if I size up, their fitted button up shirts fit me as though they were custom-made, with no gapping at the balcony. I am sorry about the skirt. That English wool is lovely! But what I really loved about today's outfit is the cobalt blue, especially the shoes. From the front they look very ooh la la, as if they're stilettos, and then the heel is a surprise. Thumbs up emoji!

    1. I have a beautiful pink BB jacket that I'll be pulling out from my spring wardrobe soon, Poppy - they usually make great stuff. That's so nice about the shirts (I love the "balcony" reference!). Yes, the cobalt blue is gorgeous, isn't it? The heel cutouts make a heart when you put the shoes sole-to-sole.

  5. The skirt looks so pretty but how annoying it was! I love your cobalt copper combo (alliteratively satisfying!)- the Fluevogs are insulted they haven't been worn yet this year! But now they are happy.
I discovered what Ephemera meant this week- how did I not know that's what it meant!?!
Happy to see ol' Vizzini! Such a babe!x

    1. It was super-annoying! I couldn't wait to get it off. I love the copper and cobalt too - so pretty. Heh, I'm always amazed at how few people know the word - most have heard of "ephemeral".

  6. I need Bitcoin to soar so I can afford to hire you to fly across the continent and sew my clothes. :)

  7. Cobalt blue really suits you. I can see why you have multiple garments in that colour in your wardrobe!
It's infuriating when an item of clothing lets you down. Sometimes it pays to be ruthless. A worthy replacement is out there!

  8. It is such a beautiful skirt but if it's not going to live up to normal everyday life and Vizzini cuddles I think it is better to let it go. Maybe someone who will pick it up next has another way to fix it. It does look good on you, but much better to not be frustrated by clothes!

  9. That's an interesting way to think about patterns. I really struggle with them, but perhaps it's the simplicity that's causing the issue - two colours seems easier because there are only two to think about, but perhaps that is not why it should be easier but why it's hard!
