Plaid Bodybag and Boots

Another late night - Tammy and I went out for our mutual Happy-Birthday-Catch-Up dinner. We've been friends for almost 25 years!

Knowing I'd be going for dinner after work, I dressed simply but stylishly.
New Jammy Dress Alert!

  • Dress - Bodybag by Jude, consignment; purchased here for $22.99
  • Sweater - Zara, pass-along from Rae; last seen here in December 2021 with gold and jungle
  • Boots - 1883 Luchesse, thrifted; last worn here in October (I was totally NOT a vampire)
  • Coat (below) - Halston, vintage 70s, consignment, Sidney; last seen here on the weekend

This dress is by Bodybag by Jude, a Canadian company - they make all of their clothes here in Canada.
Showing off the big pockets  I layered the thin mustard sweater underneath for extra warmth.

I've owned a few pieces by Bodybag by Jude over the years. This black and red poncho (pic here) is a current firm favourite, bought for me as a Christmas gift (from a consignment store) last year.
I also used to own this corduroy cowgirl dress (pic from 2013 here), which I thrifted, and my Origami dress (pic here, also 2013), bought new at a local boutique.
One of you readers asked me to define "thrift" and "consignment" recently. This is what I have in my "My Favourite Second-Hand Stores" tab (link here):

  • Consignment - The seller gets a small percentage of the cost of the item after it sells. Selection tends to be curated based on clientele.
  • Resale - The seller gets cash immediately (less) or a store credit (more) for the things the store wants. I usually call this thrift when I shop because the prices are pretty close to thrift store or cheaper.
  • Thrift - Stock is received by donation. Thrift stores are run and staffed by volunteers and proceeds go to registered charities. Totally not curated, although most of them have a "boutique" section for designer brands. Also known as "op-shops" and "charity shops" in other countries.

I shop more consignment these days (Turnabout, House of Savoy, the Velvet Crease, MONA) - there is a higher proportion of good quality items, although it's more expensive than thrift. The WIN stores I shop at are thrift (stock by donation), as is Flavour Upstairs (although technically resale). The Patch was curated vintage (bought in huge lots and priced low to sell), but I called it thrift.

Masked up:
It was a quiet day in the office, and I had a chance to get caught up on the mounds of work.

Outerwear - we continue to miss the snow that's been dumping on Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
But it's still cold! Brrr! I wore my Halston to show off to Tammy - I love that she loves fashion as much as me!

Accoutrements:
I did subtle bits of blue to go with the slate blue of the plaid dress.

  • Toque - gift from Tammy
  • Brooch - Monet, vintage fair
  • Scarf - Forele, consignment
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
I didn't want to carry a bag of shoes to the restaurant (we went to our favourite, Il Terrazzo), so I walked to work in my boots - we shared a cab home.

Silver and blue bling:
Did you notice the big brooch at the neck of the dress?

  • Mesh bracelet - Sidney
  • Brooch - vintage, thrifted
  • Smoky topaz ring - Anneli Neuman, Sweden, vintage mall
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Earrings - thrifted
  • Bracelet - vintage, consignment

  1. I knew that dress would look good on you, it's beautifully cut.
Back in the mists of beyond my Mum and Grandma occasionally used, what was known in the 1970s as a dress agency, where women would bring their unwanted clothes which were assessed by the manager, a selling price agreed and they'd get a percentage when they sold (or they'd be returned if they didn't). I haven't come across one in decades although they tended to only exist in posh towns - few and far between these days! xxx

  2. There is a thrift shop in a local Church. It’s a fairly large space (a good portion of the basement) but it always feels a bit musty to me so I don’t visit it other than once or twice when i first explored. There is a shop one town over, consignment I believe, but it is priced for the poshness of the town and is out of my budget! I know there are likely many places in Manhattan but I’ve yet to feel comfortable entering the excitement and fray of the city.

In any case, three cheers for another jammy dress!!! I like how you layered the long sleeve top underneath; that’s my technique for extending the wearability of my fall dresses. Also appreciating your non-vampire boots - low heel, walkability, yes!

My fashion decision today…wear a dress for picking up Fred or wear pants?! Time will tell ;)

    Cheers,
    Laurie

  3. My girls have found a love of thrift shopping, particularly the younger one who will be building a work wardrobe. The plaid dress with the sweater and tights looks fab.

  4. Very cute. I've been curious about consignment stores (there are many here) but haven't explored them yet. Your prompting, as usual, pushes me in that direction.

  5. Two late nights in a row, I would be properly exhausted!
Your new jammy dress is gorgeous, and I love how you picked up the mustard stripe with the thin mustard jumper. Me being me would probably have worn mustard opaques as well :-)
I shop mostly in thrift shops, but then again there aren't that many consignment stores around here. I know a couple - there's even one here in our village - but they are usually quite posh and expensive. Love the brooch and mesh bracelet, by the way! xxx

  6. I love sack dresses like that. I carry my weight in my middle. I am a wood tick skinny arms and legs and a big body.

  7. That dress looks so good on you and I like the mustard underneath too - great layering! We don't have a lot of consignment stores here - there are some for kids clothes but I have boys, their clothes don't last long! And I know of one for designer brands that I consign my bags and accessories with, but that's it really! Less chance to have the great luck you do opshopping, but I enjoy the browse, as I'm sure you do too :)

  8. So lovely jammy dress, love a comfy dress and love plaid and love that it has pockets! so it ticks all the boxes!. And you have some fabulous comfy boots!, admiring them!
Great remarks on differences between thrift and consignment, we have not a lot of consignment shops in my neck of the woods, they're usually in bigger cities. Only charities (some of them are well curated) or usual second hand stalls where you have to rummage.
