Striped Jammy Dress and Yellow

Well, I had planned to wear my new-to-me Dries Van Noten skirt today, and had an outfit all picked out. This is not it.
This is what happens when you don't actually do try-ons with your new purchases mixed with your current stuff. Jammy dress to the rescue!

  • Dress - Eliza J, consignment; first worn here (3rd outfit) for Alison's 50th birthday party in April
  • Shoes - Big Presence Desmond, Fluevog, via Fluemarket; last seen here with my banana-bird-butterfly outfit in July
  • Shrug (below) - Le Chateau, thrifted; last worn here (3rd-ish outfit, way down at the bottom) in July 2018 after our trip to Powell River

I love experimenting with fashion and my own personal style, so I'm not afraid of unusual shapes or "challenging" pieces, but the Dries skirt was just not right with what I'd planned. Nope. And no time to properly wardrobe something else, so pull out a dress!
My recent Eliza J dress thrift purchase reminded me that I had another Eliza J dress (also with wacky sizing). This one!

Sidetracking: I also still have this gorgeous lace dress by Eliza J, which is due for a re-wear soon - it's been nearly 5 years since I last wore it! Oh, and I'd forgotten all about this chartreuse green satin dress (once seen here in 2009, but worn a few times pre-blog), that I purchased in NYC at Filene's Basement in 2008 - it has been long gone from my closet. I guess I like this brand!

And I know how a fit-and-flare dress works on my body (awesomely).
This dress requires minimal thinking about accessories - the dress does most of the work.

This is nearly the identical way I wore it the first time.
The only difference is the yellow bangle and earrings vs. silver/steel last wearing. I'll have to try it with pink or orange shoes next time, shake things up a little.

Covered up for the sun.
Mark my words, shrugs will have a comeback! This one is sparkly silver and light as a feather.

The stuff:
You can't go wrong with yellow shoes. It's the new neutral!

Yellow bling:
Slight yellow theme going on. The yellows don't all match, but I don't care.

  • Belt - Liz Claiborne, vintage 80s, thrifted
  • Bangle - thrifted
  • Bakelite earrings - vintage 60s, vintage fair
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes

Vizzini was rubbing all over my legs to get me to feed him, so I saw on the floor and took his picture.
"You will feed me NOW."

Then I planned tomorrow's outfit properly - by trying things on!

  2. Thank goodness for a favourite dress to fall back on! I love it with the yellow accessories and the fit is perfect. Can't wait to see the Dries skirt in all its glory once you've played around with it a bit.

    1. Agreed, Vix! I'll be doing the Dries in today's post.

Oh, he's been fed twice since then...but then our beasts are always ravenous, aren't they?

  3. Such a classy look for a fallback outfit - I tend to default to dresses when things don't work out too! I still haven't gotten into the habit of trying things on the night before like I used to before kids came along - I just never seem to have the energy now, haha! But I'd like to be more organised and try things on rather than just planning the outfits out.

    1. Dresses are the best, aren't they, Mica? I rarely have time for try-ons the night before, but I need to do it with non-standard shapes or materials when I purchase something new. I find I like my outfits more when I put in that extra work.

  5. Ha ha, you and numbers! Hilarious. I never chose my clothing the night before. Doesn't work for me. It's all about the mood I'm in.

    1. I guess I am just a numbers kind of gal, Nancy! :-P If I left it till the morning, I would be wearing very boring outfits.

  6. I always put together my outfits the night before as well, and like you sometimes due to lack of time I do not actually try them on. But never mind, I have to wardrobe full of dresses to fall back on. That dress is gorgeous and I love all the yellows you've accessorized it with. Never mind if they don't actually match! Looking forward to seeing how you've styled the Dries Van Noten skirt tomorrow! xxx

    1. Yup, dresses as fall-back options always work, don't they, Ann? I love this classic one. I hope you like today's outfit, featuring Dries, of course.

  7. When that happens a dress is usually my go to piece too. This is a great piece to fall back on - it matches your arms ;)

    1. Thanks, Lorena! We stylish women know what works!

I actually factor in my tattoos when I buy anything sleeveless. I've put back lovely items because they clash with my ink.

  8. It's always great to have reliable dresses to fall back on. The yellow in the dress and accessories is gloriously sunny.

I look forward to seeing how the Dries Van Noten skirt gets matched with your other pieces.

    1. Oh, for sure! And you can't go wrong with stripes and yellow.

I am happy with today's Dries-focused outfit. It took a while last night to get it right.

  9. What a great outfit! Love all the colors together. Fit-and-flare dresses are my favorite kind of dresses. Vizzini has those hungry cat eyes. Our cats always have hungry cat eyes. They follow me into the kitchen every time I go in there.

    1. Thank you, Cheryene! I love a good fit-and-flare - they suit my shape well, and I always feel like I'm putting my best foot forward in them.

Ha, he does! It's very seldom that he doesn't have a "gimme food!" face, now that I think of it.

  11. This is a fabulous dress and you styled it perfectly with those yellow accessories!, you can't go wrong with yellow shoes! (love them). You are Gorgeous!
And it's amazing how having a new piece in your wardrobe makes you think on similar things you already own and how to style them. It has happened to me too!

    1. Oh, you are so sweet, thank you, Monica! I agree - you really can't go wrong with yellow. :)

Yes! I am so glad I pulled this dress out again!

  12. I recognize that "I want food now!" face! I see it twice a day at my house ;) I envy your collection of bold colourful shoes. It's hard to find anything like that when you can't wear heels or pointy toes. I would wear that dress if I had some bright yellow shoes to go with it too.

    1. Subtle, cats are not! I'm slowing working towards flats and minimal heels - my feet are continuing to rebel over too-high heels.
