Stripey, Floral and Aqua

Today's outfit was based around the top - what to wear with a striped top?
Wear my favourite skirt, that's what.

  • Shrug - Marciano, thrifted; first worn here in August 2017 over butter yellow
  • Top - Bellessa, thrifted; purchased here for $7.00
  • Skirt - Maeve, thrifted; last seen here in February with a white shirt (it's not a dress!)
  • Shoes - Prepare Guide, Fluevog; last worn here in June 2017 with the lark dress
  • Leather coat (below) - Danier Leather, consignment; last seen here a few days ago

I don't get a lot of compliments on my outfits in real life (most of my coworkers are all used to how I dress). Does that surprise you?
I really liked this combination of stripes and this fabulous embroidered orange and navy skirt.

The striped top is sleeveless, and I still like a bit of coverage in the office. I've popped aqua off the skirt before (here), so that made picking this greeny-aqua silk/cashmere shrug easy. And then we do matchy shoes!
But not a single compliment! I was second-guessing myself all day - is this really a terrible outfit?

Outerwear - not needed on the way home! It's warm and wonderfully sunny out there.
That looks pretty good to me. Maybe the stripes were too challenging for people?

The stuff:
These shoes are love 'em or hate 'em - I happen to be on the love side of the equation. They are fabulously comfy to wear - all that hidden platform means they are basically flats.

Eclectic bling:
Not even a word about the necklace, except from L this morning.

  • Necklace - thrifted
  • Turquoise/silver ring - local
  • Crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Copper/enamel earrings - Matisse, vintage 60s, vintage expo

I do trust myself that when I feel good in an outfit, I look good in it too - and I really enjoyed this look today. Just so you know.

  1. I'm surprised you didn't get any compliments on this outfit as it's so lovely! I like the print mixing and I love the orange and aqua together too! Your outfit is sure to get the compliments it (and you!) deserve here on the blog :)

  2. I think it is amazing and my 11 year old said 'That is awesome'. I can't imagine anyone not noticing your style choices.

  3. Lovely skirt. Nothing wrong with the outfit. Sure, it's natural to infer things from silence but that's often faulty. There are many reasons other than the attractiveness of an outfit that affects whether observers compliment us or not. Trust your own judgment.

    1. I agree, Ally - and I don't rely on others to make me feel good about what I'm wearing. It was a curiosity only.

  6. Love the outfit! I love how daring you are with mixing stripes and florals and pops of color. I am trying to do that more. You seriously should have your own tv show where you show people how to find thrift clothing and how to put it all together. I would watch it!

    1. Ha, I would watch my own show! I've thought about that: "On the Hunt: Thrift Shopping with Sheila". Thank you, Robyn!

  7. When I first clicked on your blog, I only saw the top, then I saw the whole outfit and went Whoa, then WOW! I like it! Even though the patterns are different it somehow all goes together, fabulously. I like how only the shrug and the shoes matched. Awesome outfit!

    1. Pam, that is too sweet, thank you! Even the shoes and shrug don't quite match.

  8. This is just perfect, Sheila! I love the stripey top with that amazing skirt, but the addition of the aqua shrug and shoes (those shoes: love, love, love them!) makes it even better. Your bling is fantastic too. But the icing on the cake is the addition of the orange jacket. Can't believe you didn't get a single compliment, though. What's wrong with people if they don't recognize utter fabulousness? xxx

  9. I must admit that apart from Polly, I don't get many compliments on my outfits either Sheila, but I think that's because our standard has become our norm. Today's ensemble is lovely, especially as it's my favourite skirt too, but maybe the look didn't capture your co-workers imagination? The thing to remember sweetie, is that we always dress first and foremost to please ourselves - everything that happens beyond that is a bonus. You're always a winner in my book!

    1. It's weird - I even tell people that I don't mind comments on my clothes, so I expected something! I do dress for myself, of course, but a little validation is always nice.

  10. I like it! I love the pops of colour. I think people are afraid to like the boldness of the matching stripes with pattern, but it looks lovely. I always struggle with floral tops and printed pants. Sometimes I am just not brave enough and feel Like I can't pull it off. I think you have done it spectacularly.

  11. This is totally a perfect outfit because you liked it, felt good in it, and because you trust yourself. That's all that is needed to make an outfit perfect. And for what it's worth, I started mixing patterns because of reading your blog, and it took my husband awhile but I think he eventually appreciated the combinations. And, like many others who have commented, I love this outfit! To me it's a wonderful mix of tailored pizzaz, filled with vibrancy and perfect proportions. There, perfect, perfect, perfect!

  12. No this is a WONDERFUL outfit!!! I absolutely adore it- all the elements - the stripes, the aqua shoes and top, the beautiful detailed skirt and the shape of it and the jewellery! I am surprised you don't get more compliments. I mean, my work colleagues are used to the slightly off-kilter wacky things I wear but still they compliment it (and the kids- they are always kind about my clothes!) I would definitely compliment you if you worked with me! The jacket is seriously nice too!!x
P.S. Thanks ever so much for your thoughtful, insightful comment on my friends post- it means a lot to me that you took the time to write that and follow me too!xx

  14. woww, what a lovely outfit! I think that a striped t-shirt and floral skirt make a fabulous combo, and your puffy skirt looks always stunning!
I particularly love how you 'bookended' your look, matching a bolero jacket with your shoes, that's brilliant! And the necklace!
I think that sometimes people is too shy to compliment! because you totally rock!!

  15. There are days when I wear what I think is a great outfit to work, and no one says anything, then I will wear something I'm not that crazy about, and everyone loves it. I work with a bunch of pretty conservative dressers.

I really like the mix of stripes and the flowers, and the silhouette!

    1. What is up with that? I work with conservative dressers too, but they are used to how I dress - I expect compliments!

      Thanks so much!
