Bigass Long Weekend Wrap-Up: Lavender Friday, Ulti Pics, Boho Winesday, Birthday Gathering

Ah, I am so grateful for long weekends! I really needed that extra day. Well, are you ready? This is a picture-heavy post, but I guarantee I had a good time!

Friday's outfit for work.
I knew I'd be going out for drinks with Elaine after work, so I upped my game a bit and wore a nice dress.

  • Dress - D'Allairds, vintage 60s, thrifted; last seen here almost exactly a year ago in August 2016
  • Shoes - Portia, thrifted; last worn here in July with a statement skirt

It's interesting to see where I was a year ago. My hair is much longer now, and I also have both of my upper arm tattoos since I wore this dress last year.
My life's not that much different, though.

The stuff:
I like that these shoes read as silver, even though they are multi-coloured floral snakeskin (and metallic!).

Silver bling:
A mix of old and new(er).

  • Cuff - Fossil, gift from L
  • Bracelet - Coro, vintage 60s, Mom's
  • Earrings - Fossil, thrifted

It's still hazy here, but it's making for some beautiful light.
That's the sun, and it was actually a big red ball.

It's still warm but not stifling hot.
"I'm a delicate furry flower. It's too hot for me."
Vizzini just flops wherever he feels like.
"These benches are adequate for my flopping needs."
L and I hung out on Friday night, playing board games and chilling with Vizzini. On Saturday, L headed off on a mini-roadtrip with Randall up-Island, so I headed off to the field to play Ultimate Frisbee.
Eh, not my best outfit, but good enough for the muggy morning. My outfit needs for Ulti are: must be easy to take off and on, must be able to put shorts on under it, must have comfy walking shoes.

  • Blouse - Banana Republic, thrifted; last seen here in July with WTF jeans
  • Skirt - Li's, thrifted; last seen here in July in a mod cowgirl outfit
  • Shoes - Down to Earth Hadfield, Fluevog; last worn here (3rd outfit) for a weekend shopping trip in April

Note the bag of cones and Ulti gear in the background
I knotted the corner of the shirt so that I wouldn't have to bother with tucking it in.
A scarf for a little extra sun coverage (although I'm always sunblocked to the teeth for Ulti).

The stuff:
Very comfy shoes - I need to wear these more!

Floral bling:
All leather jewelry!

  • Scarf - Ralph Lauren, consignment
  • Leather cuff - thrifted
  • Wrap cuff - Catalyst Reaction Leather, thrifted
  • Earrings - thrifted
  • Sunglasses - the Patch

I took the camera to the Ulti field. We play at Victoria High School (aka Vic High), and it's a lovely old neighbourhood, so I took a few pictures on the way there.
This is a house now, but used to be a church. I love that it got a new life - also, great landscaping.

There's Vic High - and I see a few players have already arrived.
It's at this point that I realized I'd forgotten to bring all the discs/Frisbees for practice and the game! D'oh! Back home I power-walked - a good game warm-up! - while the rest of the crew set the field up.
We use small traffic cones to set out endzones (sort of like a football field).

We get ready on the steps of Vic high. It's a big wide granite stair.
Everyone brings a dark t-shirt and a light t-shirt and we get our cleats on, and our water bottles to one of the endzones.

I told you I don't play in my "real clothes" - I change into my gear at the field.
My new sports bra! The gang warming up in the background.

Here I am in my gear. I started off on Team White. This is an old Calvin Klein t-shirt that I thrifted years ago. I'm also wearing stretchy shorts, and my Carolina Panthers ball cap, with my hair pulled back into a small ponytail.
 My team-mates Andrew and Lisa.
Nice calves, Andrew! He ended up straining his back during the game and going home. Aw! Feel better!

At the end of a point. I see the disc behind Andrew (stretching his back), so we scored. Team Dark is doing the "walk of shame" back to the other endzone. Each point is full of sprinting back and forth, up and down the field. We run about 10 kilometers in a game, easy - the games last 1.5-2 hours.
Karen and Lisa and I got to be on the same team, which is always fun. It didn't last though - our friend Chris was having breathing issues with the haze in the air, so he also had to quit partway through.

We traded players to make the teams more even, and it ended up being a close game, with a win for Team White.
 Mac, Karen and Nick.

Cory and I after the game, collecting the cones and water bottles. I was traded to Team Dark midway through the game, so now I'm in my Alice Cooper t-shirt.
I also have a dandelion in my cap.

Woo, off with those cleats!
Greg is on the right - he's just moved back to Victoria after nearly 20 years, so it's awesome to have another friend and player here.

Most of us, getting out of our sweaty gear and uncomfortable cleats.
From left: Zeb, Mac, Steve, Dave, Cory, Karen, Nick, Greg and Lisa.

Dave volunteered to take this one so that I could be in a picture.
From left: Zeb, Mac, Steve, Cory, Karen, me, Nick, Greg and Lisa.

Compare to this old picture, probably from around 2003.
From left: Nick, Andrew (bending over), L in front, Steve, Chris, Kelly and Casey. Everyone except Steve and Kelly still plays, all these years later. They've also repaired the granite steps, so that there aren't gaps between the slabs anymore.

This is one of the big old oak trees that we take shade under between points.
I didn't even notice this plaque until this week.
And that is a 100 year old tree!

I was so sweaty during and after Ulti, that when I shook out my wet hair, it turned my fingers all purple!
It came off easily, but I was sweating purple.

I showered and then got ready to go to town for brunch on my own, and a little grocery shop.
"But you just got home!"
I like how Vizzini poses with the two toy mousies on his post. One is near his tail.
"I'm ignoring you."
He expressed his displeasure by having a go at his post.
"This is your leg I'm scratching!"
I put on something cool and walked to town.
Flowy dress, hat and sunblock. I am good to go!

  • Dress - Kate Moss for Topshop, thrifted; first worn here (3rd outfit) on the July long weekend for bevvies with friends
  • Shoes - Born, consignment; last seen here (2nd outfit) in June to the Ulti field

It was warm and muggy with a slight breeze, which caused this dress to billow in a most pleasing way.
 Swoosh swoosh!
I love clothing with lots of movement, don't you?

The stuff:
Very minimal stuff. Grand shoes after all that running around.

  • Leather cuff - thrifted

By the time I got back from town, L was back, so we napped and then headed our separate ways. Him for Mansday, me for Winesday!
Same outfit, but I went maximalist on the bling and added a cover-up for the evening.

  • Kimono jacket - Urban Renewal; last seen here (4th outfit) in April for a movie date

Getting my full Stevie Nicks on, ha ha!
Our Winesday was a mini version: just the core group at Cat's place for a barbecue, some sangria and wine and lots of yummy nibblies.

The stuff:
Three pieces of Mom's jewelry there, all from the 60s/70s.

  • Spiky cuff - Midzo, vintage fair
  • Bronze/leather cuff - Mom's, vintage 60s
  • Wire choker - Mom's, vintage 70s
  • Leather/bead choker - Mom's, vintage 70s
  • Coin necklace - vintage 80s
  • Long necklace - Eaton's, early 00s
  • Floral ring - Sarah Coventry, antique store in Powell River
  • Amber ring - late 90s

I remembered partway through Sunday that I got a pair of pants at Winesday. Caro's Mom, Hazel, sent these awesome high-waist trousers for me - she knows I like funky clothes!
They have a very wide, rounded leg, slightly tapered at the ankle, with two pockets up at the hip. The fabric has stretch to it. These are not my usual silhouette, so I'm excited to try something different!
Linda Lundstrom was a high-end Canadian designer, who manufactured in Canada - sadly, she went out of business in 2008.

On Sunday, L and I both slept in, then walked to town to meet up with our fabulous friends to celebrate Nick's and Ross' birthdays (both in the past couple of weeks). It's a long weekend tradition of us all gathering, one that I love.
Our "theme" was to dress in something that reminds us of Nick and/or Ross. I was stumped. However, this is my entry for "Visible Monday" over at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style - I was certainly visible!

  • Top - Clover Canyon, thrifted; purchased here for $9.95
  • Shorts - Danier Sport; last seen here (2nd outfit) during our anniversary in Vancouver in March
  • Shoes - Michael Kors, thrifted; last worn here in July for a weekend wander
  • Jean jacket (below) - Ann Taylor Loft; last seen here on Monday as cover-up

Nick wears jeans and plaid shirts (we call them "Nick shirts") and fedoras. So naturally orange leather shorts. It's the opposite of Nick.
And Ross is a rocker, known for his love of the band Judas Priest and for also wearing small-brimmed fedoras. So yeah, a shirt with accordions. Perfect! I wore a black tank layered under this top for armhole coverage.

Fully geared-up, with my little neon green leather purse.
Walking shoes were needed. Lots of walking!

The stuff:
I wore a lot of round bling.

  • Purse - Club Monaco, thrifted
  • Green glass bangle, thrifted
  • Silver bangle/turquoise ring - local
  • Dragon bangle/earrings - Lazy Susan's
  • Shield ring - Nine West

I took my camera again, so lots of pictures of my "family I choose."
Including that guy, my dear L. He's doing his outfit correctly: plaid shirt, hat, and Judas Priest t-shirt!

I always take a picture of the blue bridge - it'll be gone soon.
We walked through town (tourists!) and over the bridge to Lure, to sit out on the patio and enjoy the hazy day.

Always watch your step.
 Looking back across the harbour.
Paddleboarders, kayakers, harbour ferries, seaplanes, the Coho ferry, the Clipper ferry...it's a working harbour!

The annual Symphony Splash was in the evening - over 40,000 people at the harbour to hear the symphony (on a barge).
It always ends with the "1812 Overture" and fireworks, but by that time, L and I were at home, enjoying more boardgames and music and chilling with Mr. Grumpy Kitty (because we've been out all weekend).

My wonderful friends.
Birthday guy Ross is wearing a silly wig, pretending to look like Nick (who doesn't have that much hair anymore!). Yvonne's wearing my old Zac Posen purple leopard dress (last seen here on this exact weekend in August 2016, for a visit to this same patio!). It looked awesome on her!

Cat (Ross' wife) wore her own Judas Priest shirt.
L is wearing his tour shirt from the "Nostradamus" tour back in July 2008, check it out here, I went to that concert! Ha, I wore the same jean jacket and I still have all the accessories in that outfit, including the belt last worn with the purple leopard dress. It all comes around.
Cat's tee says "Ram it down, shove it up." Nice.

Casey in a vintage shirt, keeping it classy.
I've known Nick and Casey for slightly longer than I've known L.

Randall in his hat, and classic white shirt.
 Such a great guy!

Karen with Ross and Yvonne.
Always lots of laughs with this crew!
 Nick being Nick.

Nick and Elaine chatting.
Recognize the necklace on Elaine? It's one I got tired of. I love seeing my stuff on others!

I sat and chatted with Justin for a bit.
Everyone did the hat!

Chris and Ali look relaxed.
Chris was doing better from the smoke a bit.

Vero arrived, looking gorgeous!
My lovely women!

And now, I'm off to enjoy my Monday. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

    1. I know, I'm very Visible! They were a little impractical for sitting, but I looked great standing!

      Vizzini is so pretty. :)

  3. Oh MY Gosh, that wasn't a blog post, it was a graphic novel! Guess I'll start at the beginning (a very good place to start). Lavender dress is very pretty and looks really nice with your ink. I confess to not knowing anything about Ultimate Frisbee. I know how to play Frisbee, but what makes it "Ultimate"?

My Sylvester is a "flopper" too! I would so wear that outfit with the orange leather shorts; it looks comfortable AND fabulous!

    1. Lol, yeah, I'm a maximalist in my posts as well as my wardrobe. ;-P

      Ultimate is like other sports:
*Soccer - lots of running around up and down the field. The disc can get knocked down, missed or intercepted - then it goes to the other team. Lots of back-and-forth and trading possession until you score.
*Football - you catch the disc in the endzone to score (no running it in).
*Basketball - you can't "travel" or run with the disc; you have to throw it within 10 seconds.

It's a super-fun, and very active sport! It also allows men and women to play as equals, as it's non-contact. It's also self-policed (if you feel you've been fouled, you call it, and there is no arguing).

Aw, here's to our flop-cats! And to leather shorts!

  7. Addendum to my last comment on the orange shorts . . .they would be too matchy matchy with the vintage orange leather italian moto jacket I scored at the GW boutique (aka Goodwill thrift store), but they're hutzpah reminded me of the jacket. I can't wait to wear it when this inferno in California finally cools off.

    1. Oh yes, they would definitely be TOO MUCH with the matchy jacket. We'll let that style stay back in the 80s, lol. However, worn as separates, yes, yes, YES! I'd love to see your orange jacket!
