Colour and Texture Therapy: Wintery Blues

I need to go through my closet and build one more week's worth of colourful outfits - with this outfit, I've hit the end of my pre-planned looks. I have really noticed that all the bold, bright and cheery colours I've been wearing all month have had a positive effect on my mental health.
Colour Therapy is real! So is Texture Therapy, and this skirt is like wearing silky velvet kittens (only not as bite-y, ha ha).

  • Baby blue blouse - no label, vintage 80s, thrifted; last worn here in July in a scarf-based outfit
  • Skirt - Linda Lundstrom, vintage 90s, thrifted; last seen here, caped and draped in July
  • Vest - Pink Martini, consignment; last worn here in March with Gaultier and Valentino
  • Shoes - Big Presence Desmond, Fluevog, consignment; last seen here (2nd outfit) for my first look at our October party!
  • Coat (below) - L'Atiste, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here a few weeks ago

This baby blue blouse has been a favourite of mine for over five years (Flashback here) and I'm getting close to 20 wears on it. It's such a useful style, and even though it has all these ruffles, I like the contrast with my "harder" clothes.
However, today was a day for soothing, soft clothes. The vest gave me a nice cozy layer without being too bulky.
This skirt is a silk velvet and as noted, it's incredibly soft and flowy to wear. It's cut on the bias, so it has a lot of movement, although one side of the hem dips down to the floor.
I hiked up the waist for my walk to work so that it wouldn't get damp on the sidewalk.

Masked up:
Matched to my shoes.

Outerwear - it's getting to be a little chilly for this cloth coat.
In weather news, we are in for more "atmospheric rivers" (aka torrential downpours) later this week, which will be super not fun.

Accoutrements:
More warm/soft things.

  • Pashmina - thrifted
  • Toque - gift from Tammy
  • Gloves - vintage, thrifted
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
I love these shoes, which is why I have had them in 3 other colours plus a variant style. When I spotted these snake-y patterned ones on consignment last year, I snapped them up.

Sparkly bling:
I'm starting to look ahead to December, which will be a "Glitz and Glitter" month.

  • Necklace - Alain, vintage 60s, gift from Alison
  • Earrings - vintage fair
  • Brooch - Sarah Coventry, vintage fair
  • Crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes

Do you break out your sparkly stuff at this time of year?

  3. I really don't have a lot of sparkly pieces but I do have a couple Christmas events coming up and I've been thinking about ways to add sparkle - your post is good encouragement for me to do so! :) Of course you know I love blue so I really like your outfit - that's such a great skirt!

  5. Ohhhhh, that skirt is so beautiful and drapes so wonderfully! I'm pretty rubbish at putting together outfits with luxurious items like this so this is a really useful post for me. Thanks!

  7. I do believe in colour therapy....Wearing colours makes me feel better and yes, texture therapy is totally a thing! I love how you described that velvet maxi skirt (baby kittens but not as scratchy). The baby blue ruffled shirt is lovely and I like the knit vest. Wonderful snake print shoes as well. Beautiful necklace and earrings....love these sparkly accessories. Nice reminder to wear more sparkly accessories. I do have some! Your coat is wonderful as well.

  8. I'm sitting at my desk in sweat pants and a long sleeve t-shirt, with fuzzy slippers. My hair is in a ponytail not a bit of glam to be found. I need to live through others in their color therapy. Gorgeous ensemble.

  9. I've been trying to take a leaf out of your book and put together a week's worth of outfits. I really do miss the days of my 2 and 3 day working weeks and having the time to play around in my closet ...
This outfit is a triumph, Sheila! I really love how the frilly baby blue blouse, velvet skirt and long flowing vest work together. It does look like the epitome of comfort, in both senses of the word. The matching snake patterns of your shoes and mask are a brilliant touch!
To be honest, I haven't even thought of December and the impending holidays yet. The way things are here in Belgium at the moment, we will probably be restricted again by Christmas. Perhaps wearing some glitz and glitter might help to get me in the mood? xxx

  10. I got a kick out of SAM’s comment….that’s me on a rainy day at home or a really cold day. As for your outfit, I appreciate how the burn out pattern of the long vest shines on the back with the blue blouse and velvet skirt as backdrop. Your skirt description painted a vivid image for me of nestling up with kittens before they’ve discovered they can scratch! So soft…

We haven’t pulled out any holiday decorations but have given thought to the holidays. With our children being long plane rides away the holiday preparation is more low key as they will be with the families of their partners. Our holiday indulgence is an overnight a 3 hr car ride from us in Stockbridge, MÀ. We have plans for an art museum during the day and a holiday lights walk at an old mansion, spending the night at an old favorite inn.

Here’s to putting together outfits for your Glitz & Glitter month! I know you will have fun, and we will be the beneficiaries!

  11. A wonderfully put together outfit. The waistcoat is perfect with that fabulous skirt.
Xmas doesn't get a thought here until my birthday is done and dusted although we've got three friends coming over for Xmas dinner and only four chairs so really ought to give it some thought before 25th December. xxx

  12. This term sometimes gets used negatively in certain contexts, but rest assured that I mean it wholly positively: You look like the most stylish and beautiful Ice Queen ever here!!!

  15. Oh, how I love that skirt! The colour is fantastic, and it looks so soft and sumptuous. But also *warm*, which is what I personally go for at this time of year, never mind sparkles.

  16. I love the skirt and the shoes. Not too keen on the rest (sorry). It is not that I don't like the outfit, but this is where our tastes each go their separate way haha.
