Colour-Blocked and Rainy Florals

I find it interesting to see how colours look when I make one of my pictures black and white. What colours do you think I'm wearing based on this picture, for instance?
 Grey? Cream?

  • Denim vest - Only, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit) in April with a PANK jacket
  • Turtleneck sweater - M&S Collection, consignment; purchased here for $16.98
  • Skirt - John Laing for N. Peal, vintage, vintage fair; last worn here in March for brunch and a shop
  • Shoes - Down to Earth Hadfield, Fluevog; last seen here (3rd outfit) in June to see a movie
  • Coat (below) - L'Atiste, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here in November

How about bright pink and red with a blue vest? I was bright!
I've had this skirt pulled aside to remind myself to wear it, and today was the day.

I really liked how the bright pink went with the bright orange-y red. Unexpected blocks of colour, aren't they?
Sometimes I wear this vest-y thing as a vest, sometimes as a dress. I've worn it with pants too. Pockets!

The back detail is nice - it accentuates the waist.
I only tied it like this for the picture - I left the ties hanging when I wore it open during the day.

I wore it done up sometimes too.
The two bright colours together are less noticeably contrasted.

Outerwear - this was not sufficient for a very windy, rainy and cold afternoon. I was fine in the morning.
I went out for lunch with one of the groups at work, and it was lovely, although a bit chilly. By the end of the day, however, when I was standing at the bus stop in the cold after my haircut, dripping with water, I was a grumpy camper.

  • Hat - thrifted, Vancouver
  • Cashmere scarf - Portolano, thrifted
  • Gloves - Parkhurst

But I looked good!

The stuff:
My hat blew off at one point, rolled down the sidewalk and landed in a puddle. It seems to have survived, and it did well at keeping my hair dry. The floral shoes are also soaked through, but they'll be fine.

Gold bling:
Including my-pin (the larger tree) from when I worked in a year-round Christmas store (check out a speech I wrote about it, here, from 2009). Aw...that was a fun job.

  • Bracelet - Butler Fifth Avenue Collection, consigment
  • Amethyst ring - Frances Jewelers, c. 1965, Dad's
  • Earrings - Plum
  • Small pin - Avon
  • Large pin - Keyes, gift from Ev

And now, my friends, it is time for me to snuggle up with some tea and this little monster.
"Your brain is clearly addled, Woman. I am not a monster!"

Says the cat who pulled down the curtains in the bedroom!

Have a wonderful weekend, my friends, and enjoy the magic of the season! I will be back on Sunday with tales of adventure (and party outfits).

  1. I like the brights together and the vest is a great topper = sorry you were a bit cold and wet with the weather though! I hope you warmed up and dried off when you got back home :)

    1. Thanks, Mica! Being wet and cold is a fact of west coast life, unfortunately! I warmed up once I was home.

  2. Love those lovely opulent jewel-like colours on you.
We've got that incessant rain, too - you could have wrung me out after a morning in town yesterday.
Have a fab weekend and give Vizzini a big cuddle from me. xxx

    1. I love brights like this, Vix. Gah, the rain - we need it, but still, so rainy! Happy weekend to you, and snuggles back to Frank and Stephen Squirrel.

  3. I'm loving your black and white pictures, but - unless I recognize the garment(s) in question - it's impossible to guess the colorus. Here, I certainly didn't guess pink, red and blue. I'm always surprised at how well red and pink can go together, and in this outfit they are a - literally - brilliant pairing. Both that skirt and the turtleneck are gorgeous on their own, but they really lift each other to a higher level. Oh, your poor hat and shoes! And isn't Vizzini an absolute monster? Pulling down curtains, no less! Phoebe's sitting next to me as I type. Must make sure she's not getting any ideas ;-) Wishing you a most wonderful weekend, Sheila! xxx

    1. I know, it's so hard, isn't it, Ann? Black and white totally fools me. I love pink and red, have since the 80s, when I first "discovered" the combo. Getting stuff wet is just a fact of life on the we(s)t coast. Vizzini is such a little monkey-cat! This is not the first time he's gone after the curtains. Better tell Phoebe to behave! Hope you had a happy weekend too, my dear!

  5. I can never tell what colours you’re wearing from your first black and white photo.

I thought your skirt might have been camel coloured but it’s wonderfully bright!
Your shoes are soaked – oh goodness! Are you sure they’ll be alright? I’ve had boots ruined due to rain.

    Happy Christmas. X

    1. It's tricky, isn't it, Jess? Pah, me in camel? Not likely! Oh yes, the shoes will be fine. I have never had shoes ruined from rain.

  6. I actually guessed the blue of the long vest correctly but I was wrong about the skirt, I thought it was dark yellow or light orange but it turns out it is orange red....well, one out of two isn't bad. It is hard to guess colour correctly with a bw photo reference but it is a fun challenge.

You look fantastic in this combo....love the coat as well.

    1. Thanks, honey, it was good.

Funny how colours distort in black and white, isn't it?
