Deja Dots - Hole-y Skirt!

It's almost the weekend, and I am looking forward to a wee break! No panicking - I will be back!
Wait, didn't I just wear this skirt??

  • Sweater - Dalkeith, vintage 60s, thrifted; last seen here with visible gauchos in February
  • Skirt - H&M, thrifted; last worn here two days ago
  • Shoes - Fly London; last worn here with the same sweater in December 2015

Yup, I sure did - two days ago, and yes, I cut the lining out of it! I am much happier with it now. I wore a short black half-slip underneath it, but the lining was trimmed off around the zipper and all the way up to the waistband. Buh-bye, big flammable ball of acetate!

Of course I had to do some green pieces (sweater, shoes) for St. Patrick's Day.
The shoes are a one-off swap in for today. They are one of my favourite pairs.

Um...could you tell about my little "oops" above?
Yeah, I was tired last night and a little too hasty with the scissors. I cut a huge hole in the back of the skirt! It's not repairable (maybe if I reinforced it with some iron-on interfacing?), so I said, "F*** it," and wore it all day with a hole in it. It's not really noticeable, although I was conscious of it all day.

And the moral of the story is: don't alter your clothes unless you are willing to let them go if you mess it up. I'll keep the skirt - and wear it! - until I'm tired of it.

The stuff:
I walked several blocks and had a late WW meeting tonight in these. My dogs are howlin'  - and my cat is yowlin' (that part is literally true - Vizzini wants his treats NOW).

Statement bling:
And a bit of icing on top.

  • Earrings - don't remember, Plum?
  • Necklace - Banana Republic, consignment

All right, I will be back early next week with stories and pictures to share - a little break is required. Have a fabulous weekend!

  1. I love what you did with the skirt, it looks great on you and I CANT BELIEVE YOU CUT A HOLE IN IT... nooo waayyyy thats funny though and I have done boo boo's like that before.
One time I sprayed a really expensive red top I had with stain remover only to realize that it was toilet bowl cleaner and it left 2 big white bleach marks on the front of the top. At least I had worn it once before ruining it... hah hah

Those shoes are the best. The look comfy too actually. Funny, the green sweater looks very similar to the grey one I wore today :)

Have fun and I look forward to hearing about your adventures!!

  2. I think it's cool you wore the skirt despite the hole, I do things like that too. The only problem might be that the hole is a weak point, and could grow over time? I think iron-on interfacing would probably show in a bad way; if it were me, I'd go for a visible appliqué (which can also be found iron-on, if you don't want to sew.) - which would be intentionally visible. I might consider black velvet ribbon, in a nod to the 2013 Christopher Kane duct tape pieces.

  3. Very, very pretty statement bling. It has a wonderful early 60s vibe to it.

I wonder, could that skirt be worn over something like a black pencil (or short, not-too-fluffy tulle) skirt as an over layer, which would (in theory) help to hide the hole?

Happy countdown to spring, sweet lady!

  4. I love how different the skirt looks with the lining gone, but what a shame you put a hole in it! It doesn't look noticeable in photos to hopefully it's something that doesn't bother you when you wear it again in future :)

    Enjoy your break! :)

  5. sorry about your lovely polka dot skirt, it looks way better now (and more comfortable, which is the key!). And I agree about the moral of the story, but I will add: don't alter your clothes when you're tired and/or sleepy!, I've made some big mistakes too!
Anyway, love your shoes and accessories!,

  6. Such a shame about your skirt but at least it's not obvious! I love the way you paired it with green as well. It looked very stylish - fab necklace too!

  9. Jessica (Chronically Vintage) - that's basically what I've done here with a half-slip. My black pencil skirt options are leather and wool, so a little thick! I do have a fluffy black underskirt that would give it more volume - good idea!

Other Jessica - I don't follow people until I know them a bit better, but thank you for your sweet comment. :)

  11. What a great improvement you've made to the skirt (despite that gaping hole!) I really liked it the first time around, but can see why you did what you did. The green shoes look uber comfy, yet so cool, love 'em.
Thank you Sheila for following my blog. I'd no idea I had to fulfill a certain criteria first. As you know, I'm a huge fan and love that you come back to me every week to comment. Have a lovely break and enjoy every moment x

  12. Ah, the old "slip of the scissors" trick! I like Jessica's (Chronically Vintage) idea of wearing the skirt as an over-layer with a heavier weight black pencil skirt underneath. I really like the teal/green of the shoes and sweater against the black.

    Have an excellent weekend!

  13. Anna, I never follow people unless I feel like I have a connection or something in common with them. I suspect that some people just want followers, but don't actually want to know me or visit regularly. You, you're quality - I knew it right away. ;-P

  14. Omg I love the skirt. the whole look is very runway ready. Although I have to say, I am so guilty of cutting up things and ruining them. UGH.

  15. Crap, sorry to hear about the skirt. I love a good polka dot.
I had a mishap a few weeks back with a red skirt I bought and thought I could "work on" - its currently at the seamstress' hoping to be saved : )

  16. Oops to the hole in the skirt, but I'd never have noticed until you pointed it out! Love the big polka dots and cute little jumper, and Fly shoes always rock. Xxx

  17. You could perhaps buy another black half-slip an iron it in the skirt? Or stitch it to the waistband first and then iron some self adhesive black stuff to close the gap?
I once cut out the label of a very very very expensive shirt. It was Moschino full price. And there was a little tag/label sticking out the front of the shirt. As it was sewn in the front I didn't dare remove it. Then at night with friends when we were all a bit drunk they teased me and said: "we know you never flash any labels or designer names and that you hate that. But now that you have something really expensive, you leave it there for us to see, don't you?" That was too much for me. So at 2 a.m. not being too sober, I cut it away, indeed, leaving a hole in my new shirt. I ironed it as well with sticky stuff behind it and it lasted forever.
I love how that necklace picks up the dots from the skirt. A very nice outfit. Again.
