Squeezing in one last outfit post...and finally finished the &^^%$ book!

I was busy last night and didn't have a chance to get this pre-break outfit post up. Again, feeling lazy...so I wore a dress!
This is nice comfy t-shirt material, and it's even lined.

The stuff:
Loving those shoes.

And...I finally - FINALLY - finished reading my latest book:
Book: "Midnight's Children" by Salman Rushdie, a Book Club selection by the lovely Caro.

Stats: 533 pages of the most dense, rich writing I have ever read. I stopped keeping track of my hours read and focussed on just trying to finish this. I know I started it in early March, so it took me two months to read it - and I didn't read any other books during that time!

Blurb: This book has the distinction of being the only Book Club book in over 5 years that not one of the members finished - until now! Muahahahaha!

It is dense, I mean, like this is the 99% dark chocolate of books. You just can't sit down and fall into this book for a couple of hours. Maybe one hour, at the very most. Some nights, I couldn't do more than a couple of pages. This book's language is so rich and complex that I had to re-read paragraphs to make sure I took everything in.

Now, don't get me wrong, this was a wonderful book. It evokes India and its narrator's character beautifully. You can smell, touch, hear and taste everything in it, feel the rhythm...this book is alive. But...it was really a struggle to finish it. Even when I had 4 pages left, oh, how I wanted to put it down.

This is easily the most difficult book I've ever read, even more than when I tried to read Nietzsche. I would rate it a 3/5. It would have been a 4 if I could have read it faster.

Dress (Le Chateau), shoes (Camper), belt (some tourist shop in NYC), necklace/earrings (Plum), bracelet (Oscar & Libby's).

  1. I love that dress!

I must confess, I've had Midnight's Children on my bookshelf for, probably, years now. I think I've started it once but just wasn't in the mood for something heavy going (Crime and Punishment is taking an age to read for the same reason, and it was sheer determination that got me through Ulyssess when I was at Uni!). Perhaps I should pick it up again - I understand what you mean, though. The bit I read was so linguistically dense and rich that I felt I needed to come back when I was feeling more patient!

  3. Midnight's Children is one of my all time favourite books so I'm glad you got a lot out of it. If you fancy reading more Rushdie, The Ground Beneath Her Feet is lighter and probably more fun. It still bends your head but it's very enjoyable!

  4. Lovely dress! It makes your waist supertiny. That particular shade of red is really flattering. I need to take some inspiration from this. =]

  5. So pretty! I really love that dress! Hey, I don't know if you've read them or not, but have you read the Outlander series of books by Diana Gabaldan? I just finished the third book, Voyager. I'm really enjoying them.

  8. Wow you made it, good for you! I, sadly, will not. Life is too short to read books that make my head hurt.

Gorgeous dress. Looks fabulous on you!

    Kasmira, you show-off. ;)

Alison, thanks, and yes, I've read most of the Diana Gabaldon books - they are awesome, although the later ones...well, I kind of wish she would end the series.

    Thanks, Jane!

Lesa, I don't know - I just buy them when I find one second hand.

Sherylyn, yes! I now have bragging rights, haha! Thanks!

Thanks, Kristen, it won't be long before the outfits are back (uh, like tomorrow). I couldn't just leave the blog hanging.

Sam, it's up there with "Invisible Monsters" for me - I really enjoyed it. I will do a blurb in the next couple of days. Thanks!

    Thanks, Wendy!
