Dentist Armour and Mom-Day Adventure at Bowker Creek in the Greetje Dress, and a Wee Shop

Welcome back to Mom-Day, my friends! I had a dentist appointment mid-day (not the "knock me out loopy" kind, just a regular check-up) and then met up afterwards with Mom for a stroll at Bowker Creek. We last visited there here in September 2023 - I always love reviewing the pics from our previous adventures. Where does the time go??

I needed my armour for the dentist, so chose my Greetje Dress, so-called because she gave it to me, link to her blog here (all links 'cause I love, of course).
This magnificent Jammy Dress is even more vibrant in person. The pattern is emerald green, hot pink and bright yellow against a navy blue background.

  • Dress - Boden, gift from Greetje; last worn here in July 2023 with a BYB (which I gave away)
  • Shoes - Zara, thrifted; first worn here in June with a floral jumpsuit

The print is a little muddy in pictures, but it's a big hug of a dress, and always elicits compliments. A shout out to the lovely staff at my dentist's office, Noor and Sarah! Hello!
Gotta love a dress with ginormous pockets. I stashed my glasses and my camera in them.

I started my 'fit with the gold shoes - I walked to the dentist office in Oak Bay, then walked to meet Mom, strolled with her and then walked home from Christie's Pub after a yummy lunch. Lots of walking!
I have been indulging in Risky Shoe Behaviour lately - I'm not really sure why I'm being impractical and not wearing socks and carrying bandaids at all times. Some sort of self-destructive thing going on in my brain, no doubt. There be tygers in there...

Anyway, I did wear a pair of thin socks with my shoes this time. No rubbing!
I also wore my silicone "toe sleeves" on my most sensitive corn-prone toes (a lesson I DID learn last year, after spending months getting rid of my corns).

Incognito. It was a hot day with a light breeze.
I usually do pops of bright pink with this dress, but my eyes alit on my newly-thrifted jelly purse and *bing* the light-bulb went off.

It doesn't have to match - it just has to go!
Showing a peek of my pale pink Betsey Johnson socks - I bought a plethora of sale socks at Winners recently (a rare retail purchase - I really needed socks).

Accoutrements:
Decorated bags (charms, scarves, etc.) are a "thing" now in Fashion - hey, I've been tying scarves to my purses for what? a decade? There's nothing new under the sun, truly.

  • Silk scarf - vintage, thrifted
  • Jelly purse - thrifted; purchased here for $9.95

The stuff:
I cut the backs of the heels on these with an X-acto knife - they were too tight there, and since they aren't leather, they'll never stretch. They're much more comfortable, but I never recommend you fark around with your stuff unless you're willing to ruin a piece!

Gold bling:
Odds and ends - Mom noticed her belt and ring right away.

  • Belt - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Gold cuff - D'Orlan, vintage 60s, vintage mall, gift from L
  • Bangle - thrifted
  • Flower ring - Sidney
  • Olivine/coral ring - Hawaii, c. 1977, Mom's
  • Glass earrings - Venice

We timed it perfectly - I arrived just after Mom.
Both wearing pastel pink. Fabulous necklace, Mom. Thanks so much for such a lovely day! I love you!

Let's do a full 'fit pic.
I love that pale pink ruffled blouse with the grey trousers. Ruffled cuffs!

We strolled the open path near Oak Bay High, with Bowker Creek itself on our right.
There were a few people out walking and biking.

An inviting bridge.
So much lush greenery.

I spotted a lizard scampering along a split-rail fence.
I see you!

I caught her on the other side.
Sorry to startle you!

After crossing a road, the path moved to the other side of the creek.
Yellow swallowtail butterflies flitted around.

Mom and I rested at a bench under a Garry Oak - we kept hearing birds making long chirps so I was keeping my eyes peeled over our heads for the culprit.
And I spotted her! These are all pics of Cooper's Hawks (link here, and a link here for their calls - it's the third one we were hearing). Note the hummingbird checking her out on the right.

She's facing right but looking left.
I moved around under the oak to try to get a better picture.

Another hawk flew to a branch nearby, while two more swooped through the neighbouring trees.
Back view but you can see an eye if you look closely. Must be mating season - birds getting frisky!

Well, hello, aren't you a beautiful creature?
We pointed them out to a family that was walking through.

Two together.
These are large - about the side of a cat.

Adieu!
I hope your love life goes well.

Time to head back - our stomachs were rumbling, as we were later due to my appointment.
Such a lovely place.

The creek appeared fairly low.
We've been having a dry spell.

"Mom, take my picture!"
Bridge drama.

One lonely duck.
Dude, your pals are all at Beacon Hill Park!

A crow supervised as we walked back to the car, past the high school track.
I see you - we're leaving!

I took this pic of Christies on my way to the dentist in the morning.
This is a pub that locals eat at - skip the tourist pubs in town!

I stopped in at House of Savoy on the way home, where I found this cool cocoon skirt.
It's almost a maxi length. Of course, I love the sporty vibe.

Nice big pockets!
It's a soft knit cotton.

With just a bit of stretch to keep it from bagging out.
Made in Italy, nice. Fully washable will be handy when I spill things on it.

Not to be confused with AcquaLimone, a Swedish brand, Acqua & Limone is a small Florentine company.
This was $40.00 on sale.

At Good Things Consignment, I was paying for a a friend's birthday gift when I spotted this in the jewelry case. At first I thought it was a spider, but it only has 6 legs, so it's an ant (note the gold pincer at the head).
"Take me home!" It was only $28.00 and it looked like good quality. I don't see amber in gold very often - it's nearly always set in silver.

I discovered a million of these online - they are Baltic amber and likely inexpensively made in the USSR and sold as a souvenir (much like my eelskin "Gucci" bracelet) in the 80s.
It's very good quality - there is a mark near the arrow that even my eagle eyes can't read. I did find one Esty source (here) that notes:, "Gold-plated 9kt vintage ant, spider brooch with Baltic amber from the USSR. Stamped Königsberg," and "...manufacturer brand 2ФЯ (Famous Kaliningrad - Königsberg - Bernstein factory)." I saw this brooch priced in the $100-225 range, so I got a score!

This pic is from when L did the laundry on the weekend.
"Thanks for the clean sheets."

He hid from the cleaners today!

I'm signing off now for the weekend - thank you so much for stopping by and reading! I see every comment, even if I don't respond (hi, Laurie!). Please do stop by on Sunday for tales of adventure!

As always, I loved accompanying you and your Mom on your walk.
I had to pick up my jaw after seeing that stunner of an ant brooch. How unusual. I think I need one for my collection :-) xxx

  4. Your stroll at Bowker Creek sounds delightful, and I completely relate to how time seems to fly. Your Greetje Dress looks fabulous, and I can see why it's a favorite – the vibrant colors and print are stunning! Those gold shoes from Zara complement the dress perfectly, and it's great to hear they held up well during all that walking.

Also, a big shout out to Noor and Sarah at your dentist's office for making the visit enjoyable!

By the way, I just posted a new blog entry on how to style jeans and a tank top for date night. I’d love for you to check it out and share your thoughts: https://www.melodyjacob.com/2024/07/how-to-style-jeans-and-tank-top-for-date-night.html

Looking forward to your next adventure!

  5. The maxi dress you're wearing for a visit to the dentist is gorgeous. I love the pattern and the colour. My dentist and his staff are pretty nice, too. It makes the ordeal of going easier a bit.

So nice that you had a lovely walk with your mother. Lovely to see the two of us smiling.
Adorable photos of wild life- I love birds of prey. The lizard is very cute as well.

The photos on the bridge are very pretty, too.
Congrats on your new purchases...and I'm sending virtual kisses to Vizzini. He's always a charmer.

  6. Your Greetje dress is always a joy! I love it. You and your mum both look lovely and I'm sure you turned heads on your walk which looked wonderfully cool and verdant. I've seen those Baltic amber brooches on eBay, they're excellent value for money.
William's doing a Vizzini since we got back and more or less refuses to leave our bed unless food's involved! xxx

  7. Ahh... there it is again. I am glad you get some wear out of it. That fun jelly bag is great with it. Your risky shoe behaviour is stopped quite quickly by the consequences I guess. I so know what you mean. Blisters every summer.

  8. Hi Sheila! :-) This is a quick comment because family is still here (and will be for the next 3 weeks) and I have to squeeze in my visits to your blog whenever there is a moment. Now I'm being paged for water activities BUT wanted to say this is perhaps the first time I truly appreciated the wonder of your Greetje dress. Perhaps it's the accessories or maybe having seen it often enough that it's grown on me. Anyway, seems like the perfect day for your outing with Mom, a wee shop and a dental appointment!
    Cheers, Laurie

  9. The Boden dress is stunning. You blended in very well with your surroundings on your Mom day.
    Love the ant brooch.
Hope the dentist wasn't too horrific! I just got my routine appointment out of the way too. Result!
