Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Bold Brunch and Books; Mohair Flashback; Hawaiian Happy Hour; Cat Pictures

Welcome back, my friends! An awesome weekend has been had!

Public Service Info:

Before we get into fashion and other fun things, following my previous reminder to readers/email subscribers, some of you fellow bloggers asked how to get the Subscribe To gadget shown here on your Blogspot blob

A reminder to readers who subscribe to and receive my blog posts by email: that service will be terminated by Blogger as of July. I have no control over that, as this is a free platform.
Please make sure you Subscribe via one of the alternate routes in my sidebar (it looks just like the image above), or save/bookmark me to your Favourites. Thank you for visiting!

Go to Layout (in your Blogger dashboard menu) and select "Subscribe to" from "add a Gadget" option:
Don't forget to save! There you go - I don't know exactly how it works, but it's a free Blogger plug-in and hopefully our readers can figure it out (y'all seem pretty smart). Fellow bloggers, feel free to copy my text above for your readers, if you wish - use the "remove formatting" (the T with the \ through it in your post edit window menu) to get rid of my background colour/text format.

End of Public Service Info!

Okay, moving on! L and I met up with Nick for brunch at the Ruby, our new favourite downtown diner-type of restaurant. Hopefully, our "Diner Curse" won't affect them - our previous favourite diners - Floyd's and Pluto's have both left downtown in the past couple of years.

I wanted to wear my new-to-me floral skirt, and well, I kind of got carried away with colour!
Bam! While we were waiting in line to get into the Ruby, I had multiple people check me out, stare at me from their cars, and one fellow even came back after walking past us to tell us, "You guys look AWESOME!" Aw, so nice to have one's efforts appreciated!

  • Mohair sweater - thrifted; last worn here in March when Mom and I did a photoshoot at the Castle
  • Blouse - Rock & Republic, thrifted; last seen here in May with greens
  • Skirt - Carven, Spring 2014, consignment; purchased here for $25.20
  • Boots - Effortless Sophia, Fluevog; last worn here in April with many purples

After I bought this skirt last weekend, I immediately realized it would look great with my three-tone purple/pink boots. I am wearing micro-fishnet nylons due to the boots (foot rubbing) and the shortness of the mini-skirt.
This thin mohair sweater is just the right shade of pink, but it needed something else - neon green!

I layered the neon blouse under the sweater, flipped the cuffs, then thought, "This needs something else - something BOLD."
I'd bought L this vintage tie for either his birthday or Christmas (can't remember) for a dollar in a thrift store, and he didn't like it. He's red/blue colourblind, so struggles with anything in the red/purple/blue range, poor guy! I have to match all his shirts/ties in that spectrum for him, although he does well on his own most of the time.

Anyway, all that to say I did some layering! We'll be having a wee Flashback on this sweater shortly.
There's the pink in the boots - on the back.

I added my neon leather purse. There are shades of emerald green and a lighter green in the skirt's floral pattern, so it all goes.
After brunch, we went to Munro's Books, Russell Books and Ditch Records - all locally-owned businesses. Yay!

My Movie Star Wrap for traveling in a top-down convertible.
I tied the scarf to my purse strap for walking around.

Masked up.
This is how most people saw me.

Accoutrements:
Neon green and pink is such a great combination, isn't it?

  • Leather purse - Club Monaco, thrifted
  • Silk scarf - Smoking Lily, vintage 90s, thrifted
  • Mask - by Mom

Boots!
Love 'em. Flashback here if you're interested in seeing how I've worn them before.

Green bling:
My usual "set."

  • Glass bead necklace - vintage 60s, Mom's
  • Glass bangle - thrifted
  • Crystal bracelet - vintage 60s, Mom's
  • Silver/aventurine ring - consignment
  • Silver/amethyst ring - vintage mall
  • Earrings - Stella & Dot, consignment, Vancouver

Oh, I forgot the tie! And these are three of the books I bought for myself. I also found my next selection for Book Club - I am up as the next picker! Very exciting.
"Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote - I've never read the book, but that's one of my favourite movies. "Foundryside" by Robert Jackson Bennett - I just finished "City of Stairs" by him and loved it, so I'm digging for his other titles. We read "The Shining Girls" by Lauren Beukes for Book Club (my choice) last year, and I really enjoyed it, so I was happy to find "Broken Monsters" by her in the used section.

The tie is by Peacock and is made in West Germany.
I love the two-tone purple woven pattern. I suspect this is from the 1960s.

Vizzini, what do you think of all these books and bright colours?
"Zzzzz...don't care...sleeping..."

Flashback: Pink Mohair Sweater

I found this sweater at Flavour Upstairs here in October 2018.
It's a very fine mohair knit - I always have to layer something with it, as it's very sheer.

No labels other than this Chinese one.
It was $24.99, but it looked like it had never been worn.

I wore it right away here in October 2018.
I have a dark red cami under it, and the sweater is thin enough to tuck into the paper-bag waistband of this black silk skirt. I love red and pink together.

I'm holding up the wall here in December 2018.
I've layered my viscose black turtleneck under the sweater, and picked up the colour in these awesome floral tights which I've had forever.

Layered again, with a cream Victorian-style blouse here in September 2019.
I mixed orange, pink and lavender to go with this groovy Ted Baker skirt.

As well as layering stuff underneath it, this sweater is thin enough to be a layer under something else, like my fabulous vintage Dolce & Gabbana sweater slip-dress.
I wore this out for brunch with my coworker Simona in December 2019.

Back to layering blouses underneath here in February 2020.
Matching the pink to my then-new pink and blue Fluevogs.

Burgundy red and pink again here in November 2020.
Not sure about that skirt - it's a fine houndstooth but reads grey. It's fairly new, so I'll have to give it another couple of wears in the fall.

And here's the last time I wore the sweater, in March 2020.
That's the first time I've worn it layered under a jacket. This was for the photoshoot with Mom at the Castle.

Mathy stuff: I've now worn it 8 times, which is a $3.12 cost-per-wear so far. I'm happy with that - this is a great colour and very good quality piece that I'm sure I'll have for years.

Vizzini, what's your favourite outfit?
"I like the one with the sweater that I can sleep on."

That's all my sweaters, which is why I put them away immediately!

Although it feels like our Saturday Zoom Happy Hour is winding down - we'll soon be able to have larger gatherings outdoors - it's still happening for now.
Sneaking in a wearing of my new-to-me Hawaiian dress!

  • Dress - Hilo Hatties, vintage 00s, thrifted; purchased here for $32.99
  • Shoes - Lucky Brand; first worn here (2nd outfit) in April for the Zoom Happy Hour!

By the time we got home from our jaunt downtown, the weather had gone from warm and overcast to hot and sunny.
Without the shoes, I hung out and read on the deck for the afternoon, until it was time for dinner and then our Zoom call.
I completely and utterly love this dress.

It's a perfect fit, which is a good thing, as it has no stretch.
I used to be horrified by exposed bra straps, but I've gotten over that in recent decades. Whatever, it's a black strap.

A saucy glimpse at my underlovelies.
I have bare legs here.

The stuff:
I'm still breaking these shoes in, so they haven't been worn out and about yet, but they are getting softer with each wear.

  • Earrings - thrifted

And there we go, another weekend over so soon.
"Do you mind? I'm sleeping here."

Vizzini has been happy to have us around - we spent Sunday listening to music, reading and watching TV.
"Sounds like a wonderful time."

It was. And I hope you've all had a wonderful weekend, full of good times and friends! Thanks so much for stopping by!

  1. That first outfit is so bold and colourful, I really love it!

I also love your dress for the zoom catch up! Such a perfect fit on you :) Sounds silly but while I've seen the movie I had no idea Breakfast at Tiffany's was a book also!

    1. Thanks, Mica! It was fun to wear. I love the Hawaiian dress.

I knew it was a book (because it says so in the movie opening credits!), but have never seen the book in a shop. It's a much darker version of the movie.

  3. You are a superstar! Thank you so much for sharing those straightfoward subscription instructions, I've just added them to my blog!
That Hilo Hattie dress looks fantastic on you and the colours in that floral mini are just a joy.
The blurb for Broken Monsters sounds wonderfully gory, I'll have to look out for that.
Vizzini looks deliriously happy. Our beasts have got so used to us being around all the time and have got terribly spoilt in the process. Jon bought Frank a pack of Bavarian ham as a treat last week! xxx

    1. Aw, glad that helped, although I have no idea if those replacement options actually work for people.

Thank you so much, Vix! I really enjoyed "The Shining Girls" - I think you'd enjoy it too.

He's very content, lots of snuggling and naps on us. Aw, Frank deserves it. Vizzini doesn't get any people food (except tuna), but he's mad for his treats.

  4. This weekend really did whiz by in the blink of eye. Hard to believe it is the last full one of spring 2021. Thank you for sharing some the highlights it housed on your end with us, my dear friend. 5. First of all, thank you so much for sharing that info. I'll be adding it to my blog later.
Your brunch outfit built around your new-to-you floral mini skirt is a sight for sore eyes, and a prime example of colour therapy. I've had a bit of a rough day, but it's made me feel better already! I always love seeing those amazing boots, and the mohair jumper is such a gorgeous colour (I loved trawling through its flashback) and the tie is fabulous, as is its peacock label.
I loved Breakfast at Tiffany's, which I read before I ever saw the film.
Your Zoom maxi dress is a stunner, and I giggled at that saucy photo of you showing your under lovelies :-) I love that Vizzini's hanging out with you guys. Bess certainly seems to appreciate our company, more than Phoebe ever did! xxx

    1. I hope it helps, but again, I have no idea if it will work. Sigh.

Thank you so much, Ann! I really felt great in it from head to toe, and glad it gave you a little colour therapy too. I love that tie's label.

Oh, wow, you're the first person I've met who's read the book before the movie! Amazing! I love the movie so much.

Thank you - hee hee, I have to keep it real! Vizzini has been very lovey with us lately. I think we've been forgiven for moving things around.

    1. I think you would like both, Nancy - the movie is really all about the fashion, which is incredible. Givenchy on Audrey Hepburn? Swoon!

Thanks so much! I loved this outfit.

That maxi purple dress with vertical strap of white flowers is so gorgeous! You wear it so well. The sandals are lovely as well.

    1. I think you would enjoy the book - it's very different, much darker, but has the same basic story line. It also focusses more on Holly.

  9. What a versatile jumper - which is not what you'd expect a pink mohair jumper to be! It looked fab with every outfit that you wore! Loved the pink floral Carven skirt as well. Your hair is looking gorgeous.

Glad you had a great and warm weekend and you found some books which is always a bonus in my opinion...

Same here, I love buying books!

  10. The sweater is quite versatile and I love just about every outfit you created with it! As for the Hawaiian dress, Oh My Gosh, it is a stunner, made for you! The color, pattern, fit and style are fabulous! Ahhhhh :-)

In need of some good fiction I scoped out the blurbs for your books. Like you, I had never read Breakfast at Tiffany's but did see the movie. Always enjoy seeing what other people are reading.

And am now off to read your most current post!

    1. It's been a really great buy for me, and I love the colour. So glad you like the Hawaiian dress - I really adore it.

The book is quite dark - I hope one of my books caught your eye.

      Thanks, Laurie!

  11. I completely and utterly love the Hilo Hattie hawaiian dress on you! It is a perfect fit and very sexy (but in a classy way). Also love the pink and green with your flowered skirt. I would have stepped out of the line to compliment you too.

I read Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's some time ago - Hepburn's character in the movie is a much more "light-hearted" version than in the book.

    1. Aw, thanks so much, Shelley! I love it and get what you mean - my goal was sexy but classy! Thank you - I really loved that look.

Yes, for sure, and not anywhere close to the book's Holly being very open about basically being paid for sex.

  12. Sheila, those boots are amazing! And I am loving the vintage tie over the sweater. I don't wear ties enough! I have a few that I picked up at thrift shops over the years and I have been wanting to add more, but it's always the last place I get to when I am thrifting. By that point I already spent more money than I wanted so I bail out on scoping through the ties. But now I am inspired to make more of an effort. I also love your floral maxi dress and the snakeskin sandals are so great with it! It really is such a great feeling when people stop you in public to compliment your outfit. I try to make it a point to do that for other people. A simple compliment from a stranger can really perk up one's day!

    1. Thanks so much! I have a small collection of ties that L has culled from his personal stash, but I don't wear most of them that often.

I'll probably be wearing that dress again soon, with the temps we have right now! It does feel amazing when a stranger compliments us, doesn't it?
