Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Brunch Tiger Flashback; Liz Framed; Zoom Lions; the Superb Owl

I'm back - I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! We've had a quiet one, but I still managed to squeeze out a few outfits. One of my favourite "one-off" dresses is getting a Flashback, plus our art print is done. I also got my gold on for our Saturday Zoom Happy Hour, and of course, it's Super Bowl Sunday, so I have to show my team colours, even though they aren't in it (go, Chiefs!).

So, here we go, my brunch outfit.
Rar! It's a tiger!

  • Dress - Kenzo, thrifted; last worn here in January 2020 with fringed boots
  • Shirt - Ann Taylor, consignment; last worn here in January with pink and purple
  • Shoes - Miista; last seen here in December 2020 on a successful thrift expedition
  • Coat (below) - L'Atiste, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here in December 2020

I amuse myself by asking people, "I wonder who this dress is by?"
Obviously, it's Kenzo! We're going to have a Flashback on it shortly.

I layered a sleeveless white blouse under it.
The dress is very boob-smooshy, and I would never have bought it if L had not been with me at the time.

I have worn it with these exact purple tights multiple times.
I have a short black half-slip underneath so that I didn't flash anyone getting out of Vlad (the car).

Ready to face the public.
I picked a tiger-print mask, of course!

It wasn't that cold out and was sunny (but very windy).
I was only outside briefly.

Outdoor stuff:
The coat has lines of yellow in it, which I picked up with the golden brocade purse.

  • Purse - Aldo
  • Leather/wool gloves - consignment
  • Mask - by Mom

I love pink and yellow together.

The stuff:
A favourite pair gets another wear.

Purple bling:
I pinned the brooch at the top button of my shirt.

  • Brooch - Eaton's, c. 1999
  • Earrings - Myka, gift from L
  • Silver/amethyst ring - vintage mall
  • Silver/gold/amethyst ring - c. 1984, gift from Dad

Flashback: Kenzo Fleece Tiger Dress

After one of our Saturday brunches back here in March 2016, L and I wandered up to Flavour Upstairs where I tried on this skater dress. I recognized the Kenzo name from a fashion magazine, but didn't know much else about him. The founder of the design house was Kenzo Takada, who died this past October 2020 of COVID (obit from the NY Times here).
As I mentioned, it's a very snug fit - the fabric is super-thick plush sweatshirt material with zero stretch. It's a size Large, and I've always suspected it was a child's or junior's style.

I love the embroidered tiger with his yellow eyes.
There are sections in the mouth and ears that have dark purple embroidery. It's made in Portugal. I wasn't going to buy it, but L loved it on me and insisted on buying it for me. It was $24.95 - what was I thinking? I'm so glad I have it!

There aren't that may ways to style it, but I think I hit most of them in this outfit, from March 2016.
Layered white shirt (check). Purple tights (check). Tall black boots (check; Flashbacked here). Yellow accent (check). I did learn that this dress is HOT to wear.

I shook things up a bit here in December 2016. From here on, I only wear it in winter, as it is extremely warm and snuggly.
With yellow sparkly tights and a bold cream necklace.

Since my styling is so limited with it, I'm showing you my outerwear look in December 2017.
My wonderful yellow leather jacket (11 years old!), my purple wool beret and my magenta gloves, to go with the usual purple tights and tall boots.

Deja vu!
December 2018!

At least I changed up the boots the last time I wore it, in January 2020.
Although I gave them to my coworker, Camille, as they were too high and slightly too big.

Mathy stuff: We're at 6 wearings now, which is $4.16 per outfit. Strong work! I tend to only wear it once per season (hence, a one-off), and I'm good with that.

Vizzini was utterly disinterested in us until we unwrapped our newly-framed picture.
"Why didn't you say you'd brought me some sticky tape to chew on?"

After brunch, we picked up our framed Myfawnwy Pavelic print of "Liz" aka Her Majesty Royal Highness [edit: thanks to the anonymous commenter for correcting this!] Queen Elizabeth II. L found a listing of this print in the Art Collection of the University of Victoria (here). There's a bio of her here, and you can browse some of her works in their archive here
I remember this original painting (here) of former Prime Minster P. E. Trudeau hanging in Swans Pub, where our gang used to hang out every Friday night for well over 10 years. Robin Skelton (here) was one of my poetry professors in the Creative Writing department at UVic back in 1985 - I had a drink with him at the Faculty Club (I was very nervous/shy).

We did a warm grey mat with a thin line of black and a plain black metal frame.
"You can go now, I've found the tape."

L is going to hang it in his office at work. Bye, Liz!

Zoom Happy Hour on Saturday - time to break out the golden lion dress.
And my vintage fur - it's chilly in the evening.

  • Fur - Foster's Furriers, vintage 60s, vintage fair; last worn here (2nd outfit) in September 2020 for Vero's birthday
  • Dress - The Arkin Collections, vintage 60s, vintage fair; last seen here in August 2020 with gold shoes
  • Shoes - Tod's, thrifted; last worn here in September 2020 with fall-ified summer clothes and a kimono

Yay, gonna see our friends!
Shiny was in order.

I added this gold loop belt.
Some brown tights.
Then I jazzed it up with a tiny hat fascinator.
"But I want your attention now, Woman!"

And my fur stole.

The stuff:
I clomped around in these tall shoes for a couple of hours - I even served dinner in them. I made a big batch of chili for Super Bowl Sunday.

Gold bling:
Just the usual suspects.

  • Belt - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Earrings - Biko, consignment
  • Brass ring - 70s Brutalist, vintage mall
  • Amber ring - c. 1996
  • Tortoiseshell bracelet - J. Crew, thrifted
  • Gold bracelet - thrifted, Sidney

Here's a better look at my wee hat fascinator.
I think this is only the second time I've worn it - the first time being here in April 2012, for a steampunk look.

While I was doing my stair picture on Saturday evening, L was picking up his "Vex" prize for coming in dead last in his football pool this year (he's won multiple times in the past, so this is a bit of schadenfreude for the other participants!).
Cole - who won - presented L with the most disgusting, horrible alcoholic drink he could find.

L was not thrilled with Cole's choice (which is the point).
Some sort of sour, fruit-flavoured stout. Yuck. Way to ruin a good stout.

Normally, L would be drinking that down with a crowd of football fans at our house for our Super Bowl party, but this year...

We are celebrating on our own - it's Superb Owl Sunday! If you are a What We Do In the Shadows fan, you'll know what I mean - a small YouTube clip here if you don't. This was my favourite show of last year, link here 'cause I loved it and highly recommend it.
So, please enjoy your own Superb Owl party with some wonderful and superb owls here (Vizzini was quite entranced with the burrowing owl).
Wishing you all a good game, no matter which owl you prefer!

Thank you so much for stopping by, my friends! Stay safe, stay calm and be kind.

  1. How do you track/ categorize your previous wears? I remembered Kenzo passing recently before reading your post. I wonder was he designing still or retired?

    1. Sam, do you see the bulleted block of "last seen/worn here" below my first outfit pics? That's how.

Did you read Kenzo's obit that I linked to? He had long retired before he died.

  2. The correct way of referring to the Queen, is "Her Majesty The Queen". Other lesser royals such as Charles or Camilla are "His/Her Royal Highness".

  4. Good evening Sheila, what a cut outfit and again I would not of thought to put the collared white shirt underneath but it is so cute and you have one of my favourite pais of shoes on. Love the purple jewellery one of my grandmothers rings is Amethyst and silver she wore it all the time so pretty. I am wearing our bright red jumper today as we are in a winter wonderland at the moment with snow so pretty but aware that is easy for me to say because didn't have to go out. I see you have been corrected above but we live and learn ;) anyway sheila thanks for a lovely post Shazxx

    1. Thank you, Shaz! I like layering shirts under dresses - and yes, I love those shoes too! I am very fond of amethysts (I wished they were my birth stone when I was younger), and enjoy my amethyst pieces. How lovely that you are wearing "our" jumper for the snow today. Eh, not a huge deal to me on the title. No one objected to me calling her "Liz" but heaven forbid I get the wrong address! Ha!

  5. Your Kenzo tiger dress is brilliant, as is the term "boob-smooshy"! I am so stealing this from you :-) I often find myself wearing the same tights with the same dress or skirt, although lately I'm trying to avoid that by checking my blog to see how I wore it before. It's at moments like that, that I regret not naming my clothes like you do! The tiger mask was the obvious choice, and oh, there's that wonderful Aldo purse again!
The frame enhances the Liz print perfectly, very cool, and lucky L. to have it in his office at work.
I'm totally enamoured by your Zoom outfit. The dress would have been glamorous on its own, but adding the fascinator and fur stool makes it truly magnificent. xxx

    1. Oh, please do, Ann! These technical (snort!) terms are so useful! I sometimes check to see if I've worn a combo before, but most of the time I just rely on my memory. Many of the clothes that are "named" get names because I can't search for them without a unique signifier. I love the purse, and was happy to wear it again (my poor purses are being neglected lately!).

It's a lovely picture. I am jealous of not having it at home.

Aw, thank you! It was so fun to dress up - I needed the fur to keep warm. Brrr!

  6. I love how you dress up for a Zoom meeting with friends! That is such a gorgeous dress. I love gold in clothing.... and in jewelry, shoes, bags.... i'm not a huge Kenzo fan but I like the design of the dress. And the color suits you very well!

I have quite a few Kenzo pieces - he and Dries Van Noten are two of my faves. Thank you!

  7. The Kenzo dress is fabulous, well done that man for talking you into buying it. The shape is fabulous and that roaring beastie detracts from any boob smooshiness - something I've never had the privilege of experiencing!
Love the Zoom outfit, tres classy!
Love the Owl Party photo, Vizzini looks very confused, maybe he's more of a football fan. Not liking the sound of the sour fruit stout but I did try a bitter chocolate one last week and it was delicious! xxx

    1. Thank you, Vix, and thanks to L for buying it for me! I'll trade you my boob smooshiness! It's a pain!

Thanks - so shiny, all that gold. Our friends always appreciate that I dress up.

It was a funny way to entertain ourselves. Vizzini likes us on the couches so that he can sleep on us - that's as much as he likes football! L did not mind the stout, but it was 8% so he was snoring away later!

  8. It is hard to go wrong with Kenzo, it is always soo good. I am surprised though that you wear it a lot as you say it is boob-smooshy and you don't like anything uncomfortable or wrong with your clothes. Anyway, it is a nice dress, as is the gold one. Totally different but both nice.
Love the picture of Elizabeth. I have just finished all 4 series of the Crown (I am late to the party).

    1. I do like that Kenzo clothing is different than most designers', either through colour or pattern or style. Yeah, the dress is very boob-smooshy, and that's why I wouldn't have bought it for myself. However, I now love it, so I put up with that.

I love it too! I have not watched The Crown yet, although it's on my Netflix list.

    2. I did two episodes per evening, every evening until the end.

  9. That's a lovely print of "Her Majesty", and the grey matting was an excellent choice. I usually don't like clothing with the name of the brand splashed across the front, but for some reason, it's ok with KENZO. I have always thought that dress was so cool.

I am also not a fan of emblazoned logos, but I find this so humourous, I'm willing to forgive it. Thanks so much!

  10. Goodness, that Aldo gold + floral design print - which looks so sensationally, chicly 1960s - is stunning.

  15. Sheila, your Kenzo dress is the best thing I have seen all year! I love the style of it and the fun graphic and your purple tights and gunmetal brogues are so perfect with it. Your metallic dress is equally amazing! Gosh, I want to come play in your closet! Poor L for losing his fantasy league. (Insert sad face). I have been playing for the past two years and narrowly missed last place last year but finished in fifth place this year so a little better. Ha. I am horrible at it!

I have a fun closet - you would enjoy it! Yeah, since he's won multiple times, it was fun for the rest of the guys to watch him enjoy his Vex drink at half-time. I came in second once, and have dallied in 1st (only to fall in the final weeks). I'm good at it! I watch a lot of football.
