Those Atrocious Shoes

L and I have perfected our morning routine: he stays out of my way, as I'm a dragon before I've had a coffee. It's almost a ballet in our single bathroom as I apply my make-up and he brushes his teeth before leaving for work.
It's at this point that we hug and say goodbye, that he checks out my outfit. Today, he said, "That's a great outfit...except for those atrocious shoes."

  • Top - Topsy Turvy USA, thrifted; last worn here (3rd outfit) with my Buffy dress for brunch in October 2019
  • Dress - Dolce & Gabbana, vintage 90s, thrifted; last seen here (3rd outfit) in December 2019 for brunch out with Simona
  • Shoes - Mellow Bossa Nova, Fluevog; first worn here (5th outfit) for brunch in February
  • Coat (below) - Zara, gift from Dominique; last seen here in February in the same outfit as these shoes

Now that we are in March, it's time for me to start reviewing my fall/winter wardrobe, and planning re-wears of my favourite things. I "cut" this dress last year, but my girlfriends convinced me to keep it and they were totally right.
A wool made-in-Italy D&G body-hugging slip dress from the 90s? It's a classic!

It is a little pill-y and the elastic in the "bra straps" is nearly shot, but heck, that's part of the charm. This is no let's-visit-the-90s cheap reproduction; this is the real deal.
The top is also 90s, a fine mesh with a tropical floral print - it's one of the few things in my cold-weather clothes that goes with these shoes.
As the shoes are a new purchase, they've been worn in my fall/winter collection, but they'll likely only come out to play for spring/summer henceforth.

Outerwear - I'm done with this coat. It's cool, it's fun, but it's not worth the space in my coat closet (which is crammed). It's also fuzzed out in places from various bags I have carried.
My former coworker Dominique gave it to me, so it was free. I wore it 15 times in 3 years, which is pretty good! Into the giveaway pile it goes - I'm sure it will go to a good home.

  • Leather gloves - Club Monaco, consignment

The stuff:
If you don't like chunky platform neon orange shoes, then you will probably join L in his opinion that these are atrocious. If, on the other hand, you like these, you'll agree that they are all kinds of awesome! They're also basically a flat, and are incredibly comfy.

They are searingly-bright, highlighter orange neon, by the way - I blew up the colour in all of these pictures to try to match the actual neon, but it just doesn't work. In person, it's "put on your sunglasses or they'll sear your retinas!" (which I said to many of my colleagues today).

Black bling:
The multi-coloured top helps pull the orange-and-black combo away from Hallowe'en-adjacency.

  • Necklace - swap from Vero
  • Studded leather wrap - Kipling, thrifted
  • Chain/leather wrap - local
  • Earrings - thrifted

  1. I love the bright shoes with this Sheila! I'm definitely a fan of the shoes - even if most of my shoes are boring neutrals. I do need to add more colour! I tend to focus on scarves or bags for brights, need to mix it up a little!

  4. I think L. must need his eyes tested, as those neon orange shoes are brilliant. They've got a Dutch clog vibe going on, but in a good way. Plus, they match that groovy top brilliantly. I'm glad your friends persuaded you to keep the D&G dress, as it hugs your wonderful figure in all the right places. Also a big fan of that black necklace! xxx

    1. He'll never like a chunky shoe, Ann! As I noted to Vix, he's a fan of the classic pointy-toe pump. I'm excited for summer outfits with them.

Yes, sometimes my friends bring me back - it's such a great dress. Thanks!

  6. I know the ballet of sharing a bathroom. And I like your shoes so I guess, in the future, I won't ask your husband for his opinion of my outfits!

    I like your rainbowy top!
We have 2 bathrooms upstairs but we use the shower in the ensuite rather than than using the main bathroom (less cleaning!)x

  8. I had to laugh at you “out on your sunglasses or they’ll sear your retinas!” comment. You are humorous!

Y’know, I saw a Fluevog ad today and thought of you. I’ve never seen Fluevog shoes being advertised in Australia before! X

  10. That D&G dress is an absolute classic, I totally agree. It was a defining style of the decade and one that looks no less chic and stylish as it did three decades ago. I adore how you've layered it here and am 100% behind your choice of shoes. The punchy orange goes awesomely with that delightful blouse.

    1. Yes, I love that it is such a classic look of the 90s - it hasn't dated like so many other styles have. Thank you, Autumn! I love the neon!
