Unplanned Plaid

In the middle of the night, I woke up in a panic: I'd forgotten to plan today's outfit!
Normally, I'd do a jammy dress, but I'm doing red and/or pink in my outfits this week for my own little personal Valentine's Day challenge, so I mentally went through my pants/skirts to see if I could figure out what to wear with either this blue sweater or the green one that I got on the weekend. Either of those work as a good starting point for an unplanned outfit.

  • Sweater - Intimate, vintage 60s, thrifted; purchased here for $7.95
  • Skirt - Liz Claiborne, vintage 80s, thrifted; first worn here in November 2019 with a floral punk jacket
  • Shoes - "I Know" Irregular Choice Star Wars, gift from Louise; last seen here (2nd outfit) in May 2019 for a shop downtown
  • Leather coat (below) - Danier Leather; last worn here in December 2019

Going through my closet in my head puts me right to sleep, unfortunately, so this morning I still did not have an outfit to wear. I grabbed the blue sweater...
...remembered that I'd worn blue with this plaid skirt the first time I wore it, and voila! Outfit built.

It was a lovely sweater to wear, and you can see that it's a true deep cobalt blue.
The skirt has a stripe of this blue in the plaid, so they worked well together.

I'm a major fan of the deep pockets.
I had a deep discussion with one of my male coworkers about why women get so excited about pockets in their clothes, which ranged from women's emancipation to chatelaines, and ended with a bit of a rant about how infrequently women's clothing has pockets. Do they even make men's clothing without pockets? I think that must be pretty rare!

Outerwear - our temps are up around 6-9 degrees these days, and we actually had a touch of sun and blue sky. Leather weather!
No rain, although it's in the forecast. Sigh.

  • Scarf - Roots, thrifted
  • Gloves - Parkhurst

The stuff:
I tend to skip over these shoes, but they are perfect for celebrating love. They even have little hearts on the toes!

Round bling:
"I love you!"
"I know."
Bits of colour to go with the blue/red theme. When I'm in a hurry, I go to old favourites.

  • Leather/steel cuff - Rimanchik
  • Silver/onyx ring - Tocarra, vintage fair
  • Lapis lazuli ring - Wendy Brandes
  • Earrings - Tania Gleave, Vancouver

  1. I'm a big fan of plaid and I think the cobalt blue sweater is the perfect mate.

I learned something today! Inspired by your pocket comments I googled "why are there no pockets in women's clothing?". I had no idea there was a history/sexist conspiracy behind the no pockets for you thing. Pockets are wonderful, useful things. I can't tell you how often I've been forced to stuff a tissue up my sleeve because there was no where to keep it and then, horrors! - washed it with the garment. So, thank you for making me curious :)

    1. Thank you so much, Nana! I love plaid too.

I'm glad you looked that up - I didn't want to get too deep into the history and politics of it here, but isn't that outrageous?

  3. No, they don't make men's clothes without pockets. Male consumers wouldn't stand for that. It's an outrage that female clothes don't have more pockets.

    1. The idea of you not having planned your outfit strikes me hard: at first I worried if you'd had a stroke! :)

    2. It's really quite ridiculous when you stop and think about it. Everyone needs pockets!

Ha, I'm sure it's just menopause brain. I usually am right on the ball with my outfit planning.

  4. That happened to me too, Sheila, but unlike you going through my wardrobe in my head makes me wide awake! Last-minute outfits can be hit or miss, but this is definitely a hit. The jumper and skirt are perfect together, and I'm loving the pops of red from your earrings, cuff and the little hearts on yous shoes! Well done on not reverting to a jammy dress - however wonderful they are - and let your creative juices flow that early in the morning ;-) And your skirt has pockets, which makes it even better! xxx

    1. I find mentally sorting through my wardrobe soothing, rather than stimulating. Aw, thank you, my dear! Pockets make every item of clothing better (maybe not socks).

  7. I had a discussion about the women's pockets thing with a tailor in my neighbourhood who has since retired. He is Italian, very old school, and his reasoning for no pockets in women's clothing was that "it ruined the line". Which I get, if it's a pencil skirt, but not if it's a full skirt or loose pants. I get very excited when I discover a dress I like has pockets.

    1. See, I call BS on that for pencil skirts too, though! I have a few pencil skirts with pockets, and there is no line ruined there! Just look at this pencil skirt I'm wearing!

Pockets or lack thereof in a dress can make or break it for me.

  10. Oh wow did you really wake up in the middle of the night?!
Well if you did it was not necessary, you're a bright woman with endless options in that closet, so you were to find something fabulous to wear as you did.
