Bigass Weekend Wrap-Up: Friday Early Autumn and Vintage Fair; Two More Down for Brunch; First Theatre, Last Wear

Hello, my friends! It's been a busy weekend - I hope you are all enjoying a lovely bit of downtime yourselves.

Let's get this started with Friday's outfit, which I wore for both Casual Friday and for my jaunt to the Fall Vintage Fair after work.
This is actually an outerwear shot - as I wore my "coat" (this vintage green jacket) at the Vintage Fair, this is how people mostly saw me while I was out and about. Plus the green doesn't show up well in the indoor pictures below.

This is also my entry for "Visible Monday" over at Patti's Not Dead Yet Style. Go!

  • Jacket - Simon Chang, vintage 80s, thrifted; last worn here over yellow and zigzags in May
  • Dress - Nanette Lepore, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit) in April for post-Ulti brunch
  • Boots - Matisse, consignment; last worn here with my Florence dress in June

Here's how I wore the outfit for work all day, pigtails and all.
I'm insanely fond of this dress; the neck, waist and cuffs are all elastic smocked bands, so it's super easy to move in, and very comfy.

I still adore a high-low hemline too.
Excellent for swooshing in the office.

The only thing that would make it better is pockets.
My pigtails were very popular at work. Who says a 50+-year-old can't wear pigtails?

Since I'm covered head to toe, they make this outfit a little less sombre/serious. You know I prefer to be playful in my clothing.
I took an extra stair picture to show off the colours in the dress. You'll note that I have my leopard belt on over the dress here.

I took it off and re-belted it over the blazer when I went outside.
 Oh, but wait, there's more!
Not knowing how the weather will turn these days, I added my dark green felted hat to my ensemble as well.

The pigtails kept me from getting hat-head.
All geared up and ready to hit the vintage fair!

  • Hat - consignment
  • Purse - Roots, thrifted

The stuff:
Comfy boots were still needed, but after a full day of work and then standing at the vintage fair, I was exhausted and tired by the time I got home late at 8pm (grrr, we will not discuss the bus issues I had!).

Wooden bling:
That's the best $1.00 belt I've ever bought.

  • Leather/cow hide belt - Talbots, thrifted
  • Wood Klimt ring - consignment
  • Wood ring - thrifted
  • Wood/silver earrings - consignment, Powell River

They did not do a full "vintage expo" as has been done in years past - I suspect it was too expensive (the venue) - so it was the standard little one at the Da Vinci Centre. I went by myself, and spent a couple of hours perusing the tables for treasures.
A 1963 copy of "Moonraker" by Ian Fleming. I'm amused by the advertisement inside for the "second James Bond film, with Sean Connery as Bond!"

An $8.00 beetle brooch.
I like the blue on gold. It's not high quality, but I think it will be nice on a sweater or lapel.

I didn't find a ton of things, and tried to only purchase items I really loved.
This long/midi skirt is of the same era as a skirt that I bought in 1986 for a friend's wedding.

It's VERY 80s, and is a lovely silk - and it has pockets!
I love that blowsy flower pattern. It's a classic.

It's by Alfred Sung, and was $32.00, which is a bit on the high side for my budget.
However, WIN is always a good cause (it stands for Women In Need, and is a charity). Although my photo's blurry, you can see that it's the pre-Great Size Shift of the late 80s (when vanity sizing came into effect), which is equivalent to a modern size 6. It's also made in Canada, where Sung is from (he co-created the label Club Monaco).

I am very fond of this pin-up style of fine sweater, and really loved this deep magenta wool-blend one.
The style is 1950s and this will be a very useful item in my wardrobe.

I've been seeing the brand "Rodier" around lately, and did some digging to find out a bit more about it. This is a great summary here about them - they developed the knitted jersey that Coco Chanel discovered and used in her first designs, and still make very fine quality knits (that sell for about $200 each). I paid $20 for this sweater.
As they didn't launch their own line of knit wear until 1956, I know this sweater is not earlier than that, but this is a very old label, so likely from the late 50s. You can see by the amount of wear on the label that this sweater has been washed many times, but it's in A+ condition. There is no content tag, but it feels like a wool/synthetic blend.

L and I went for brunch on Saturday morning - no Ulti (we are nearing the end of our season), so we did a few chores downtown afterwards.
Getting in wearings of two more of my not-yet-worn items - this sequinned skirt is the first one.

  • Sweater - Lacoste, thrifted; last seen here in August with zebra corduroy
  • Skirt - Banana Republic, consignment; first worn here with snakes and tall boots in February
  • Shoes - Half Truth Tanya, Fluevog; last seen here in June for my day-trip to Vancouver to see Shelley and Mel
  • Denim duster coat (below) - Plum, thrifted; last worn here (3rd outfit) in October 2018 for a weekend shopping trip

I kept this sequinned skirt out in my spring summer because the colour is so bright and cheerful, but it wasn't a go-to for me, obviously.
I stood out at Pluto's Diner slightly!

At least, compared to other people in their Lululemon and pajama bottoms.
As L and were walking down the street after, a wee girl in a silver sequinned dress came towards me.

"Woo! Way to go, sequins!" I high-fived her.
We sparkly gals have to stick together!

The other not-yet-worn item is this long coat. I don't wear this stretchy denim duster very often, but I still love it.
Long, lean, slits up the sides...
Pockets and a nice belt if I so desire.

The stuff:
Easy walking shoes again. These have gotten a lot of wear in the past five years.

Lemon-lime bling:
My grandmother's jewelry - I covered the Lacoste alligator with the brooch. I hate wearing exposed  logos and usually try to cover them up.

  • Brooch/earrings - vintage 60s, Grandma S's

When we got home from town, I finished up a Zentangle for Tara, as a thank you for the art supplies.
This features a variation of Zentangles, called "dangles". I like the swoopy-swirly designs. I hope she likes it!

Not even time for a nap after that - I had to get ready for the debut play of the Belfry Theatre's season.
And another unworn item in my closet gets its last wearing - I'm done with this yellow dress.

  • Dress - Calvin Klein, thrifted; last seen here (3rd outfit) in July 2018 with different gold accessories
  • Shoes - Super Fine Cardinal, Fluevog; last worn here in June with another yellow dress that I vastly prefer
  • Coat (below) - Joseph Ribkoff, thrifted; last seen here in August

My requirements for theatre-going clothing are: glamourous, comfy and Mom-worthy!
"Got any more rubber bands in your purse?"

Unfortunately, I'd forgotten that the last time I wore this was for dinner out with Mom! Oops!
"Is that nice lady coming over? She gives good tummy rubs."

As noted, I'm done with this dress - it just doesn't feel like my style anymore. I wore it 9 times over the past 4 years, and only paid $29.99 for it, so that's just over $3.00 per wear. I am totally good with that.
It will go to a good home, I'm sure.

I actually preferred my ensemble with the coat more.
 It's just so magnificent!

The stuff:
Fabulously comfy shoes for our stroll to and from the theatre/pub afterwards.

Gold bling:
My little purse is pre-blog, found in a vintage store around 1997.

  • Purse - Anne Klein, vintage, c. 1997
  • Belt - vintage 70s, consignment; Powell River
  • Earrings - Biko, consignment
  • Cuff - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Ball bracelet - Butler Fifth Avenue Collection, consignment
  • Amber ring - c. 1996
  • Crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence

And today, we've been chilling out and watching football, and giving Mr. Purryhead lots of attention.
"Tummy rub time?"

He will flop over anywhere, and beg for a tummy rub.
"Ah, that's the spot."

Thank you all so much for dropping by! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend.

  2. I love that first outfit Sheila! I just pieced up a long sleeve midi floral print dress the other week in the sales although I think I might have missed my chance to wear it with boots like this I'll have to give it a go!

Have unpacked all the boxes now and come to the realisation that my box of belts is missing, so I'm very jealous of your leopard print belt! I have 3 belts and all the rest seemed to have vanished :(

  3. I love Saturday's outfit; the silhouette and the shades of green of the sweater and the shoes. The denim duster is fabulous too - the contrast of the pistachio green and denim is so good to my eye. Gorgeous pieces. Lise

  4. I'm head over heels with Friday's outfit, Sheila! I'm loving all of it and would wear it all in a heartbeat. That dress certainly is a beauty, but it's looking absolutely amazing with the jacket, belt, boots and hat. Not to forget your pigtails, which are super cute! I would have bought the Moonraker book too, it would fit perfectly into my vintage pocket book collection. As for that skirt, that's such a gorgeous colour and print. I'm hearing you on the theatre-going dress. It's lovely, but might be a bit plain for you. It is indeed looking a hundred times better with the coat, which gives it an edgy look. Much more Sheila! xxx

    1. Thanks so much, Ann - you've spotted my favourite as well. I'm excited to read "Moonraker" as I picked up a vintage copy of "Dr. No" last year and really enjoyed it.

Agreed, that yellow dress is just not me anymore. I'm happy to let it go.

    1. Thank you so much, Vronni! I know, that coat is a winner (I wish it were lined!). I'm looking forward to wearing it more as an indoor jacket in the fall. The shoes are awesome - I love them.

I know, it's so cool when you find a like-minded/dressed fashionista, of any age!

  8. That Victorian style dress is bang on trend over here, but your styling makes it unique as ever - leopard print belt and pigtails was never going to occur to the creatives was it? I agree that the yellow dress maybe has served it's time, but goodness how fabulous that coat looked atop it!

  9. The dark print floral dress is so different from what I'm used to seeing you wear, and it looks soooo good on you. I think the pigtails really make the outfit (you should wear your hair like this more often!). Too bad the yellow dress has worn out it's welcome. Yellow is a great colour on you, but I'm sure there's an even more fabulous yellow dress waiting to be be discovered. The sequinned skirt paired with shades of green is absolutely delightful! P.S. I have been reading your blog posts at work, but I can't comment from my work computer so I'm catching up this long weekend.

    1. I got that reaction from a lot of people - I loved wearing pigtails and will definitely do them again when they're appropriate to the outfit.

I don't regret the yellow - that style doesn't feel like me anymore. I do have another yellow dress that I'm excited to style up for cool weather.

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments, Shelley! I really appreciate every one.
