Best Dress Ever, Plus Book Club

Forgive my hyperbole, but this is actually the Best Dress Ever. It's a Slow Fashion champ, too.
I've had it for nearly 10 years and this is wear #24 - that's pretty impressive.

  • Dress - Desigual, 2010, London; last worn here in March with bold gold
  • Lace top - Tangerine Jill, thrifted; last seen here under my long blue cardi in January
  • Shoes - Miista; last worn here (3rd outfit) earlier this month for Vero's birthday hangout
  • Coat (below) - Tangerine Jill, thrifted; last seen here in May over a lovely Nanette Lepore dress

I layered my thick stretch lace top under it this time. It's such a versatile dress for layering.
It's created from pieces of fabric sewn together, and all those fabrics are woven. There is no printing at all on the dress - lots of embroidery, though!

"I've got my eye on you!" My coworkers always chortle at that. This is their favourite dress of mine, for sure.
The orange square at the bottom is orange and pink brocade. The black bubbles across the back are beaded.

And there is a large parrot embroidered on this side.
Amazing, isn't it? I paid a lot for it, but the quality is paying off in longevity.

Outerwear. This is really a bright bubblegum pink - I'm highly visible to traffic while I'm walking to work.
The coat is the same brand as the lace top - Tangerine Jill was a local company that's been out of business for a while, and every so often I luck out and find a piece second hand, like this dress. They made beautiful clothes.

Nice deep pockets. They're lined in pink satin, like the entire coat, including under those ruffled lapels.
It's a bright start to the weekend!

The stuff:
The dress is pretty maximal, so my accessories were minimal (this time!). I adore these shoes - they are purple/green iridescent, and are known as my Trout shoes, named by my coworker Frank many years ago (he knows car colours).

  • Earrings - don't remember
  • Lapis lazuli ring/Fulvia Ring - Wendy Brandes

Book Club is tonight, and I'm off to Karen's shortly. In my book club, when it's your turn, you pick the next book and buy all the copies for distribution. It's completely your choice, whatever genre or subject you want, and it's a surprise. Our host provides dinner, we bring our drink preferences, we catch up, discuss our last book, and then the picker presents the book.

Tonight's my turn! I picked a history book...a fashion history book!
The Battle of Versailles by Robin Givhan (summary here, linking 'cause I love).
I learned about this event in fashion history when I learned about Stephen Burrows, the African-American fashion designer.

Of course, I have to take my piece of authentic vintage Stephen Burrows to show my book clubbers!
I'm wearing my Wendy Brandes rings today because she's the fabulous woman who gifted me this piece of fashion history, here.

And now, my friends, I must head out for the evening. I'll be back on Sunday with tales of adventure! Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

  1. You know how many times you wore it? Exactly? That's a super-power. :)

    1. Ha! I counted the last time I wore it, so I just added 1! I am always thankful that I had the foresight to link back to the last time I wore my garments, when I first started blogging, Ally!

  2. Your dress is beautiful every time you wear it, and I like the lace layered under it!

Thanks for linking to the summary of the book sheila! i hadn't heard of it before but it sounds really interesting! I like clothes and accessories but don't really know much about the history of fashion much, I should brush up on it a bit! I hope you enjoy the book :)

    1. Aw, thank you so much, Mica! You've seen it a lot, I know!

It looks like a really cool book - I'm excited to read it. The more I read about the history of fashion, the more interested I get in it.

  3. What a beautiful dress. I love that it is made from different fabric pieces and the embroidery is stunning. It looks great with lace worn underneath it. Nice shoes and blue accessories as well. You look fabulous in this look. It is great that you've been keeping track of what you're wearing. I only started doing it recently when I started thinking about sustainable fashion more and wanted to keep track of how many times I have worn an item. I don't take photos of my outfits on daily basis (that's a good idea, though) but I photograph them often enough...or better to say my husband photographs them so I should be able to calculate how often I wore something too. Having a blog is a bit like having a digital closet, it makes maximizing our closets that much easier.

That book about the history of fashion sounds fascinating. Let us know how you liked it! I think I only read one or two fashion history books and that's odd because I love history and I definitely love fashion, so I should get more of them.

    1. Thank you, Ivana! The quality of the dress is quite amazing, and it's even better in person.

Like I said above, I'm really glad I had the foresight to start linking back to the "last time seen/worn here" very early in my blogging career. I don't always keep track of exactly how many times I have worn each item, but I generally have a pretty good idea if it's a few or a lot. It is like a digital closet - yes! I love that!

I am looking forward to reading it. There are quite a few books out there on fashion history, and I've only read a few myself, but if history and fashion are your things, then you should look for more books! :)

  6. Who could ever be bored with a dress like that, whether you're the one wearing it or the one admiring its wearer. Even if it was expensive to begin with, it has certainly been worth it. Looking at your gorgeous bubblegum pink coat gave me coat envy. It would certainly brighten up the dullest of days. Then I realized I've got a pink coat too, which is badly in need of another outing, so that you for reminding me ;-) The book you picked for book club is intriguing me, so I will certainly look out for it. Have a fabulous weekend, my dear! xxx

  7. That dress has definitely earned it's keep! What's not to love - a simple, flattering shape elevated into something marvelous with colour, embroidery and beading.

Great choice of book! I haven't read it yet, but want to. I know a bit about the "Battle of Versaille" and met one of the models in that show, Beth Ann Hardison, at a friend's gathering in New York.

  8. I'm starting with my favourite bit! The Shooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooes! (trout shoes- snigger!) They are gorgeous. I've just done a google search for Miista shoes as clearly I need a pair of those in my life.
The dress though is EXQUISITE! So detailed and intriguing. I'm not surprised your coworkers love it. It's beautifully tailored too. I'm pleased it is such a workhorse in your closet.

    1. It's apparently an official car paint colour name, Kezzie. I love them, and will be sad when they wear out, which I hope will not be for many years.

Thanks so much - I adore the dress, and am really glad that my initial investment has paid off in its longevity.
