Invisible Vest and a Cat Topper

This is my last week of my fall/winter wardrobe - the big swap-over is this coming Sunday. I'm still trying to sneak in outfits with new-to-me items, and also get in final wearings of some old faves.
New here: the shirt, the shoes and the earrings. Old: the trousers.

  • Shirt - Pink Tartan, thrifted; purchased here for $12.50
  • Trousers - vintage 90s, Pariscope, thrifted; last seen here in January, looking fab with chartreuse
  • Shoes - Coach, consignment; purchased here for $18.50
  • Coat (below) - Vassali, consignment; last seen here a couple of weeks ago

I was stymied by this outfit when it came to getting dressed this morning. I did not like how everything looked together AT ALL. I'd intended to wear this grommeted vest (here) over the whole thing, but I just loathed how it looked on. Pretend this outfit has a fabulous invisible black vest over it - that's how my brain saw it!
I kept taking the actual vest (instead of the above invisible one) off and putting it back on, hoping it would look better. It didn't. I tried a cardigan over it. Then the vest again. It looked horrendous on me; made my waist look thick, hit my legs at a bad spot, did nothing for me (and it didn't have pockets! Outrageous!). What was I thinking? Into the donate pile it went.

I think I salvaged this as best I could. I buttoned the blouse up to the neck and grabbed this piece of satin ribbon to pull in the black elements of the bottom half. I adore these fun trousers - I never thought they would be so versatile! I have had them for 3 years (and I've liked every outfit - click back in the "seen here" link above to see them all) and have worn them 10 times. Not bad for $8.95!
"Needs more cat hair."

The shirt doesn't quite work untucked with the pants, but the pants are super-high-waisted - trust me, I tried tucking it in and it was...not something I plan to share! This shirt is 100% cotton and fairly stiff; it didn't like the tuck.

I did like how the shirt looked overall, though - it's a really good fit. I also really loved this pattern-mixing...just not these two pieces without some sort of topper.
"I told you, cat hair is the new black."

Maybe Vizzini's got a point! I could carry him around all day?
"Let me fix your delicious tie for you."

So much better, right? It needs a black topper to make this work properly.

Outerwear - see what I mean? It's like a bajillion times better.
I didn't need the gloves on the way home, and the coat billowed out majestically behind me.

  • Leather gloves - Danier Leather

The stuff:
The shoes are difficult for me visually. I am just not used to this look being "in" again. Mules have such a strong association with me of the mid/late 90s. I think they might look better with a short skirt or a wider-legged pant. What do you think?

Silver bling:
I had also planned on wearing the matching pendant to my new earrings but the neckline of the shirt was either too high or too low - I even tried buttoning it up all the way and putting the necklace over it, but it was not meant to be.

  • Silver cuff - JPL, vintage fair
  • Silver/crystal ring - Soul Flower
  • Silver square crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Silver earrings - M&M, consignment, Vancouver - first wearing, purchased here for $8.00

Well, tomorrow's another outfit! Try, try again!

  1. I see your problem but I do like the shoes with the pants. Of course, thye look better with the black coat too ;)

  2. I think Vizzini is the perfect accessory to any outfit. I wonder if a black belt or a softer vest would have worked.

    1. Yes, I agree, I wish I'd had a drapier vest. Vizzini gets too squirmy!

  3. I agree with Chalotalo, Vizzini makes the best accessory!
Oh, those malfunctioning outfit days, they are truly sent to try us. That jerkin looked good on the hanger but definitely best being removed from your fabulous wardrobe. I love the ribbon tie and the addition of that black coat takes everything to another level, dramatic and fantastic.

    1. He does, and he knows it, Vix! Yes, it's humbling when an outfit goes wrong! If only I could have worn the coat all day.

  4. We can't get it right all the time, but I'm still somewhat miffed whenever an outfit doesn't quite turn out the way it looked in my mind's eye. Still, the trousers are fab, and I love the addition of the black ribbon tie, which makes all the difference to the outfit. I agree with Vix that it looks quite dramatic with the coat. And Vizzini! xxx

    1. Agreed, Ann - I'm mad at myself! Ah well, did the best I could and got a cuddle with the cat. Life is good.

  5. Fab trousers! I think the sleeveless vest that you wear as outer wear would have looked great with this outfit but you would have baked in it at work...smart shirt btw; love the addition of the ribbon.

    I love the new earrings.

Vizzini's skills are continuing to develop - he makes a brilliant fur accessory!

    1. Thanks, Vronni! They've been great for years, a nice surprise. Oh, good call - I still couldn't have worn it all day, though. It's heavy coat material.

Thank you! I'm wearing the necklace today.

Vizzini has taken over this blog, I swear!

  6. You did a good body swerve here, Sheila. The shirt looks fine untucked, but heck I do know what that feels like then the outfit doesn't deliver your expectations. I'm having a thick waist feeling currently and am trying to muster up the energy to tackle it - less food and more exercise generally remedies it, but I just need to make a start!

    1. I was so annoyed by the whole thing, but trying not to take it out on the clothes. I hate it when things aren't fitting right.

  7. I do like the outfit with the coat on, it looks really fabulous and cool! And always a fan of any coat that billows out majestically behind you!. I also love the accessorizing too and those shoes!
    besos I

  8. You are ACTUALLY cosplaying a Doctor in this outfit! I kid you not- you look like William Hartnell in this! I adore it!!! Especially with the blazer! Vizzini is so cute. I love the way he's always roound you!x

    1. I had to Google that - I totally do look like him!! Ha!

Vizzini is a big lovey thing - and we give him lots of attention.

  9. The shirt and pants look good, i like the soft pattern mix, its quite clever my friend.
I have issues with mules too. Buy them, never wear them, then they are no longer trending so I get rid of them. Then they're back on trend, i just bought a neon pair, let's see if I go through the cycle again.

    1. I liked the pattern mix too, thanks, Lorena! Yeah, mules...they never quite look right. I have 3 pairs now (two pairs of flat ones) - we'll see how they last!

  10. Vizzini is sooo cute!
I agree, I think the mules would look great with wider legged pants.
Another day, another chance to have fun with an outfit, I like your outlook. X

    1. He knows it, and all this attention goes straight to his head.

Yes, I agree, and I'm looking forward to trying them again.

Exactly! We just keep trying, and pushing, and sometimes we fail. And that's totally okay.

  11. I agree that the outfit needed something black over the blouse - I hate when outfits that you've created in your head just don't come together in reality. I think the mules would work better with a wide leg pant.

    1. It's the worst! Ah well, I think my win/loss record is pretty good overall. Agreed on the mules.
