Dress Over Pants - Ten Years Later.

Although I'm not a slavish follower of fashion trends, I'm always interested in what the "cool kids" are wearing. I hear dresses over pants are making (another) comeback.
I first tried this trend in January 2009 (here) with a short velvet dress over flared jeans. It doesn't feel like nearly 10 years ago! And yet, here I am, doing it again.

  • Cardigan - Sparkle & Fade, swap from Sarah; last seen here just a couple of weeks ago with teal
  • Dress - Derek Lam for DesignNation, thrifted; first worn here in July just plain on its own
  • Trousers - Banana Republic, thrifted; last seen here two weeks ago for a trip to the dentist
  • Shoes - Chie Mihara; last worn here with these same pants in July

Here's the only picture I took of that first, "daring" outfit:
I find it odd now that my arms look so blank! I don't think I had any tattoos at all then!
I still have those glasses (they're the pair I use when I'm dyeing my hair), and I still have those white-gold hoop earrings.

The vision I had of this outfit didn't quite come to fruition. I'll be packing this thin cotton/linen dress away for the fall/winter - it's not lined, and it clung to the trousers and to the cardigan, causing it to ride up and not sit properly. I felt rumpled all day and kept trying to adjust the dress.
I will also be putting the green trousers into storage. They feel more like warm months to me. The colour story was all good, though. Green, plus black and grey and white and rust. Yes!

It was freezing in the morning, and I wished I'd had something warmer on than this cardi, which is fairly thin - you can see the white stripe of the dress through it here. It was fine by the time I walked home from yet another trip to the dentist.
And I'm back to the dentist again on Wednesday - time to get my permanent crown! I'll be royalty...hee!

The tunic-length mini-dress over pants is a look I like, but I won't be repeating this particular one.
I'm far more likely to do something like this outfit (that was back in May here, down at the bottom). I find it funny that I was so nervous to do a dress with pants when I was new to blogging - that was such a big deal to me! Now, it's just another tool in my kit for me to use/play with/mess around with.

The stuff:
These were one of my best shoe purchases this past 6 months. They're incredibly comfortable, and are practically flats!  I'm really grooving on the colour rust right now - I'll miss these shoes being packed away, but imagine the rejoicing when they come out to play again at end of March 2019.

Green bling:
Bring out the green! And then put it all away - I store my green pieces for the cold months too. Nearly time for all my rhinestone glitter and copper jewelry collections to reappear!

  • Glass bangle - thrifted
  • Earrings - Stella & Dot, consignment, Vancouver
  • Jade/brass ring - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Amber ring - c. 1996

    1. I love the colour mix, don't get me wrong. But these items didn't work well together overall. Thanks, Becky!

  4. Personally a dress or tunic over trousers is my all time favourite outfit. You look fantastic in yours and I hear you about the dress riding up and clinging - grrr!

I also loved your velvet tunic over jeans from 2009 with the pointy toed boots. Very chic. Loved the colour mix on the 2018 outfit, too.

    1. Thanks so much, Vronni - I'm pleased that I'm in your comfort zone! Yes, the clinging part was not the best. I felt so awesome in that first dress/pants combo!

  5. I used to wear tunic dresses over trousers, and later over leggings, as well, but I don't think I'll be going back to that any time soon, simply as I no longer feel comfortable wearing trousers. But you are looking fab in this outfit, Sheila. I love how all those gorgeous colours are segueing together. Such a pity about the dress riding up, though! xxx

    1. I dislike leggings intensely, Ann, so you will never catch me in them, but I do like the dress/pants look on occasion. Thank you so much - I really liked this colour combo too.

  7. It's a shame the fabrics caused this outfit to be unsuccessful in wear, but I am so glad you have a record of that fabulous matching of trousers and cardigan to the different coloured stripes, it really looks fantastic!

    1. Yup, it's a good LOOK, but not a good WEAR. Thanks, Radostin!

  8. A total winner ! The dress over pants trend is something I have also yet to try. You totally mastered it, specially with that colour palette.

    1. I love the colours, but the actual outfit was more challenging. You have to try this at least once!

  9. I DO like wearing a dress over trousers (actually my work colleague did it today!) - I used to do that back in the late 90's! You looked great in this but if you are uncomfortable with it, then it doesn't work! Love the colour of those trousers- I had some like them but I don't get on well with tight trousers in certain materials!

    1. I didn't do it in the 90s, so I got it on the next fashion cycle. I like the overall concept, but the fabrics just did not play well together.

  10. The colour story is excellent, but not all types of fabric work with the dress over pants outfit. I've worn a dress that is slightly too short over skinny pants in the winter, and floaty dresses over giant pants in the summer.

    1. Yes, the linen blend dress was not a good choice. Layering like this is so tricky!
