Special Occasion - It's Raining Babies

It was actually Angela's baby shower on Saturday, which was somewhat excruciating because a) I do not have children and b) I am not so much into babies and there were a lot of them there.

Of course, I dressed up:
I stuck out like a sore thumb, and I'm sure I intimated the hell out of the rest of the attendees. Ha!

I found this dress in a thrift shop last week - it was around $25 (it came with a little bolero jacket, but it has no shape and I probably won't wear it). I love it. The colour is mossy green and matches my eyes - the pattern is a rusty brown. I love the shape of the neckline and the little bow at the waist. This is definitely from the 50s (metal zipper, style, overall quality).
Added the Fluevogs to give it a modern twist, the hat for the kooky factor, and some bold jewelry just for fun.

The stuff (with nice detail of the waist of the dress and the fabric):
These two bracelets were really heavy worn together! The ring is new - it's Guess and I found it on clearance at the Bay for $5! Score!

Earrings:
They are actually more of a rust colour than this.

Hope you all had a fab weekend!

Dress (no tags, vintage 50s), hat (Accessorize), shoes (Fluevog), green stone bracelet (handmade gift from Cathy), stone/silver bracelet (Fairweather, c. 1999), earrings (Le Chateau), purse (Naturalizer).

  1. Love that dress -- the hat is priceless and I particularly like that bracelet w/the lavender stones.

Oh, and shhhhh, don't tell anyone but I dislike baby showers too, and I actually have kids, lol! Think they'll revoke my Motherhood membership?

They are relatively silly if you ask me, and kind of archaic. When I was preg w/my 1st we just had a big family party, men & women. I still got gifts, of course (that's the point, lol) but it was alot less ridiculous.

No doubt you intimidated the other guests, as well they should have been, you were clearly the best dressed there :)

  2. You look great. I'm glad you intimidated them! Just the other day I decided I'm going to start wearing my more extravagant Ossie Clark maxi dresses to ordinary events. Screw what people think!

  3. I had a baby shower for my fourth child as they are fairly new over in the UK. It was at 8pm in the veening so there were no children around. Very civilised.
    Great dress.

  4. Oh how FUN! I love your fun, fun hat, and that dress is priceless.

We actually have a vintage silk strapless dress that belonged to my Nana that was a similar style. It's just a bit too tight for me to wear out without worrying that I would damage the fragile material or the zipper, but if I ever shrink down, I'd love to wear it out.

Where on earth do you score such great thrift finds? Next time I'm in your area, thrifting is on my to-do list!

  6. I believe in May West's saying
"It is better to be looked over, than overlooked!"

  8. You always find the best consignment stuff! There are a few stores in my area and I hardly ever find anything, especially nothing as awesome as a kick-a** vintage 50's dress!

  9. I'm so jealous of your moxy. I would buy that dress, I would model it in my closet, and I would plan to wear it to a shower, but then I would wimp out.

And the hat! Oh my. I'm swooning.

  10. Hey, Kayleigh. I had a lot of fun putting the outfit together.

Oh, I am so glad someone else dislikes baby showers! They are so DULL.

I'm sure I intimidated them...and I would have been best dressed in jeans!

Wendy, thank you so much. I'm glad I did too! Good for you - screw 'em! They're just jealous.

Jane, I so wish this had been in the evening...and that there had been wine!

Kari, thanks! You do have to be so careful with vintage pieces; a lot of times, the fabrics are very fragile, and because we don't wear the same foundation undergarments, we run the risk of pulling the clothes out of shape, too.

I have a bunch of favourite stores I go to - this one is a charity shop for women in need.

Thanks, Beth! I loved the hat.

Erin, I adore Mae West - that is the perfect quote!

This is more of a mossy green than olive, but same diff.

Diane, thank you! I love hats too and I need to just suck it up and wear them more. You *are* just a pup, sweetie. ;)

Watergirl, thank you. I actually spotted this on a rack of clothes that they hadn't put out yet and grabbed it.

Tina, you have to reach deep down inside and be brave! It feels good to be wearing something totally unique, but it takes some getting used to to have the chutzpah to do it at first. You can do it!
