Weekend Wrap-Up: Grape Ape and ORANGE LEATHER SHORTS, and Mermaid for Book Club

We're still trying not to have much face-to-face interaction with people over the next few weeks, but we couldn't miss out on our usual Saturday brunch with Nick - he's family! I went a little over to the top for it, wearing a look that I put together the other night in a fit of mental health exercise.
Fortunately, Nick is used to my whackadoo stylings, and did not blink an eye at my ORANGE LEATHER SHORTS (my apologies, they insist on all-caps).

  • Blouse - Halston III for JC Penney, vintage 80s, thrifted; first worn here in May 2021 with Big Boss Pants
  • Sweater top - INC, thrifted; last seen here in September 2021 with PANK
  • ORANGE LEATHER SHORTS - Danier Leather, vintage 80s, thrifted; last worn here (2nd outfit) in July 2021 with a long denim vest
  • Shoes - Groovy Aubrey, Fluevog; last seen here in November 2021 with pink Boss Pants
  • Grape Ape coat (below) - Forever 21, thrifted; last seen here in November 2021

It was super foggy out!
If you stare in the centre of the picture, a Castle spire may appear.

I really wanted to try layering this vintage Halston (yes, that Halston) blouse - it's so oversized that it needs reining in.
This little black sweater top is usually worn like a camisole, under jackets and things, but it worked really well with the blouse. Hooray!

I almost always wear a pair of thick tights with these shorts (note the pockets above, yay!).
I showed off the 7" zipper to the servers at the Ruby - they were very impressed. "OMG, those are leather??"
I was happy at how well they worked with my orange Fluevogs.

Masked up:
I only had my coat and accoutrements off while we were having our food.

Afterwards, L and I ran some errands and did our weekly grocery shop.
I decided - since I'm already full-on sartorial madness - to wear the Grape Ape coat.

So this is how most people saw me.
There were a few double-takes.

Accoutrements:
The weather's been mild and there has been no line-up at the Ruby since before Christmas. Everyone's in hiding until this whole pandemic thing blows over.

  • Purse - Ted Lapidus, vintage 90s, vintage fair
  • Gloves - consignment
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
Comfy shoes for walking a few blocks.

Badass bling:
Just a few bold pieces.

  • Leather studded wrap - Kipling, thrifted
  • Chain/leather wrap - local
  • Bug pendant (don't remember)
  • Wood ring - Dots
  • Silver/onyx ring - Toccara, vintage fair
  • Gold hoop earrings - 5th anniversary gift from L

L and I watched football and dozed all afternoon, then enjoyed a late night of board games. On Sunday, I made us breakfast, then got ready for Book Club. Due to Covid exposures/keeping safe, half of us met in person and Zoomed in the other half.
No one saw this outfit, as I was swathed in layers for us to sit outdoors.

  • Turtleneck - Yest Basics; last worn here (2nd outfit) in December 2021 under brocade
  • Mermaid skirt - no label, vintage 70s, thrifted; last seen here in February 2021 for two Zoom calls
  • Boots - Arnold Churgin, vintage, thrifted; last worn here (3rd outfit) in September 2020 for an outside Winesday
  • Coat (below) - Danier, consignment; last worn here a week ago under my plaid cape for the periodontist
  • Cape - Bodybag by Jude, consignment, gift from L; last worn here over this jacket

Isn't the skirt cool? I love this mermaid shape - this is its 5th wearing and I'm under $2/outfit.
I normally would not wear this sweater on its own - it's very thin and shows every little bump.
But that's okay. No one saw it!

I masked up, but didn't need it - I thought I might have to bus home, but L drove me both ways.
I'm wearing the same coat/cape combo that I did for the dentist a couple of weeks ago.
This is how I looked for Book Club, plus I had a blanket on top of me while we Zoomed outside.

Accoutrements:
I like a mix of red tones.

  • Scarf - gift from Milind
  • Beret - Parkhurst, consignment
  • Gloves - Parkhurst
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
I can't believe it's been 14 months since I've worn these boots. They were one of my tried-and-true shopping pairs, and I just don't shop with the same frequency I used to.

Brass bling:
Only my earrings were visible, but I was still armoured up!

  • Brass/leather cuff - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Poe cuff - Jezebel Charms, gift from L
  • Mexican horoscope necklace - vintage 70s, Mom's
  • Earrings - Mom's, Fiji
  • Klimt ring - consignment
  • Silver/smoky topaz ring - Anneli Neuman, Finland, vintage mall

We discussed Ciara's pick, "The Mercies" (my last book read of 2021), and Carolyn presented her pick, "French Exit" by Patrick DeWitt. We read "The Sisters Brothers" by him many years ago in Book Club and enjoyed it (the movie is not good).
I'm excited to read this (and am giggling at the cat on the cover). Caro included a bookmark for each of us from her mom, Hazel, who is an artist. Mine's called "Valentino."

And how was YOUR weekend? Any adventures?

  1. Only you could have ORANGE LEATHER SHORTS, and have shoes to match! Love this outfit so much!

  2. Oh yes, the orange shorts deserve capital letters. Super styling! Loving the swishy skirt with the tartan cape, too. A match made in heaven!
We've had that fog, too - it's all very spooky first thing in the morning.
Our weekend has been a whirl of walking, drinking, watching, reading, selling, visiting friends and, of course, some charity shopping.
The art on the book cover looks like it was inspired by my favourite David Hockney painting, Mr & Mrs Clark! xxx

That sounds lovely - I'll be over to visit you shortly.

  3. I love the shorts and shoes match, and how well all your book club layers work!
I'm finding things really quiet here too with a covid wave. We pretty much isolated after Christmas to get me through covid free to my wisdom tooth removal surgery and the boys their first vaccines. might start doing more playdates again soon but still outdoors only for a while!

    1. Thanks, Mica! It's been very quiet here too, hoping that the covid cases start to drop. Good luck on your surgery (ow) and the boys' vaccines! At least you can be outside!

  5. Oh fantastic! Those orange shorts! And you wear them so well.....obviously! I love that cape also very much. You almost make me search for one........but I am on a dry January.....lol.

  6. I also think that the orange leather shorts and matching shoes were brilliant! Not many of us could pull this look off, but you did so amazingly! The Grape Ape was perfect with the orange--I love that you totally went all out, even if I personally don't have the guts to do that. Maybe I admire it so much because I don't think I could pull it off! But I would totally wear your book club ensemble. . .I adore that mermaid skirt.

Of course you haven't been shopping as much! I have hardly shopped in either consignment or thrift stores for nearly two years now. Or in person at regular retail clothing stores. Damn the pandemic! It has often stifled my creativity in dressing, though there are times I can muster up the energy to dress for fun even if I am just home and no one sees me but my dear husband, who is oblivious to my efforts. After all, in the end, I do it for myself!

    1. You never know until you try, Linda - I never thought I'd be wearing shorts (never mind leather ones) into my 50s. Most of the time I just say "f**k it" and wear it. I love the mermaid skirt too.

I used to shop every weekend, and now it's about once a month. I do find that I'm being much more creative with making outfits now, however, and I am having fun shopping my closet. It's not like I'm going to run out of clothes.

Wearing what you want just for yourself is the BEST.

  7. Fab outfits but my favourite was the mermaid skirt ensemble! What a pity you weren't seen. The boots you haven't worn for 14 month are lovely - wear them more - I understand about the less shopping opportunities to wear them, though. Wonderful accessories; loved the Fiji earrings.

I must look for the Patrick De Witt book. I loved 'The Sister's Brother' and I've also read and enjoyed 'Ablutions'. What a stunning bookmark.

    Have a great week,
    xxx

    1. That's my fave too, Vronni - and I don't feel too bad about being seen, since I shared it here! I know, but I bought the boots for function more than style. I will keep them, though.

I'm excited to read this one.

  8. I'm a huge fan of these Orange Shorts and also a huge fan of the orange Fluevogs (I'd buy myself a pair if my feets were not that fussy) so this is Doubled Fabulousness!. Probably even better as You Rock It with some matchy accessories and a cool coat!. Love it!
And your mermaid skirt is such a fab piece, and it looks gorgeous&warm with the plaid cape and badass boots!. Lovely ensemble!.
I have to look for some of these books at our local library, a comic novel looks like the perfect read these days!

    1. If you get the chance to go in a Fluevog store and try some shoes on, do it! I think you could wear these orange shoes - all those straps are fully adjustable for wider feet.

      Thank you!

  9. Definitely capital letter shorts and I can't get over how well they match the shoes! Love how the shorts look with those tights, and then there's the Grape Ape to complete the picture.
The mermaid skirt is to die for, and so is that cape, which I don't mind at all seeing again so soon.
Love the foggy photo, and yes, I spotted the castle spire! We had the same weather last week, and Antwerp's cathedral completely disappeared from view. Very atmospheric though!
The book cover is gorgeous, and so is that delightful bookmark! xxx

  10. Those orange shorts are fabulous, I adore them paired with your orange shoes; a real Wow of an outfit Shiela!
Love the swishy, swishy skirt too.

All quite quiet here is Scotland.
I had a relaxing weekend, meeting with just a few people and catching up on some rest. x

  12. Those orange leather shorts are fantastic and I love the shoes you wore with them. Orange is such a happy colour. The outfit with the maxi skirt is gorgeous too.
I watched French Exit movie just the other day and LOVED the cat in that movie. Did I mention that Michelle Pfeiffer is in it? I couldn't imagine anyone who would have a better 'cat chemistry' than the famous Catwoman. I didn't know this movie was based on a book. News to me! Maybe if you end up liking the book, you can see the movie as well.

I looked up the movie - I'll have to check this out after I've read the book.

  13. Those leather shorts are one of my favourite pieces in your closet, partly because I don't know anyone else who has orange leather shorts! I have a pair of red leather ones that I love but my waist has expanded so that they don't fit anymore. I can't bear to part with them as I hope I may be able to wear them again one day.

My weekends are never exciting - groceries and a visit with my bestie are the regular routine.

I liked Patrick DeWitt's other two books, so I will look for a copy of the French Exit.

  14. Sizzlingly sensational outfit, my sweet friend. I love how you never fail to inject a rainbow's worth of fabulous hues into a season that is (in our neck of the woods at least) almost always sorely lacking in the real deal.
