Afternoon Tea Pajamas, Mom and a Modern Mullet

Today was such a wonderful day! It started off early, as I had a 10am haircut, and I had not picked my outfit the night before.
I like to just wear whatever takes my fancy on days when I'm not rushing to get to work.

  • Pajama jacket - H&M, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here in May 2020 (Flashback there) with these same pants
  • Top - VanessaVirginia, thrifted; last seen here (2nd outfit) in December 2019, layered under my Buffy dress
  • Pants - H&M, consignment, Vancouver; last worn here in April (Flashback there)
  • Shoes - Aldo, thrifted; last seen here in May with my lifesaver dress (which I gave to Yvonne)

I rarely repeat outfits, but even when I do, there's often some element that's different.
If you check out my Flashback on this pajama jacket (here), you can see that I've worn the jacket, top and pants all together before, but not with red shoes or this belt. It's totally different!

Both the receptionist and my stylist Kelsey were smitten with this look. I agree, it's a winner.
Jacket off - I'm wearing a pink cami under this lace top. The top is actually a deep pinky-red.

Rear view - I'm a major fan of my Big Boss Lady Pants.
But they are extra-magical with the addition of my pajama jacket.
I felt positively swanky in my afternoon tea pajamas!

And yes, you read that correctly above: both the top and the pants are H&M.
I see so much crap in stores by them, but every so often I find a gem.

Masked up. I did a lot of walking in the morning and enjoyed the semi-sunny day with my mask off when I wasn't around people. It felt so decadent!
I invited Mom over today for her first visit since Thanksgiving/October 2020 to have lunch/tea, and I went over the top slightly! I'll show you below shortly.

The stuff:
I had to wear easy shoes for walking to the salon downtown. I stopped at a bakery and the grocery store on the way home to pick up some goodies for us.

Minimal bling:
The colourful outfit did a lot of the work.

  • Belt - Emmanuel, vintage 80s, thrifted
  • Klimt ring - consignment
  • Earrings - vintage 80s, thrifted

Vizzini was ensconced on His Pillows when I left in the morning.
"Oh, you're leaving?"

I can't resist giving him some attention.
"You mean bothering me, Woman."

L and I call him our scientist, because he always needs to smell everything and check it out. We usually let him - it takes the mystique away from things so that he doesn't go after them.
"There is nothing interesting here. Move along."

One last scritch before I go.
"This is getting tiresome."

Speaking of tiresome, I've been getting bored of my hair. So I asked Kelsey to give me a "modern mullet." Ta-dah!
Business in the front, party in the back, baby.
A lot of the bulk in the length has been trimmed off, and I have lots of layers on top.
I envisioned a little Joan Jett, a little Florence Henderson (aka Mrs. Brady from the Brady Bunch).
It has so much movement and feels so fresh and fun.
My bangs grow like weeds, so we always trim them up extra-short.

I've been reading about the recent interest in and resurgence of this old style, and of course, my pal in NY Wendy Brandes (link 'cause I love) has been rocking her mullet for years!
I had this book in with my fashion literature and reference.

Aw, it's a present from Casey and Helene, for L for his 31st birthday.
Their daughter Madelaine must have been a baby - they had daughter Jacqueline a year or so later. They're both adults now!

The book is pretty silly, but it did give me some ideas. I took it with me and showed it to Kelsey - she was SO excited to do this. I let her do her thing.
My inspiration was the English Mullet. It says:

AKA the Runt, the Castle Donington, the Smokey Bacon

Considering how vital the Mullet has been to British culture -from Samuel Taylor Coleridge to Kajagoogoo - it's little wonder that the cut lives on in the heart of Albion. Fertilised by curry, Jagermeister lager, and Embassy cigs, the English Mullet stands tall in an uncertain world, eschewing the ever-changing fads of cool Brittania.

Best sightings: Northern discos, fish'n'chip shops.

Eyup! Paul Calf, Tiger, Wicksy on EastEnders.

I remember Kajagoogoo, but all the other references are going right over my mulleted head, ha ha!

I had just enough time when I got home to prep all of our food, and then...Mom was here!
We sat and gabbed and ate for three and a half hours - the time just flew!

She brought me a freshly-made purple mask. Sweet!
"I can take a hint," she said. I guess I've mentioned more than once that I don't have a purple mask! Thanks, Mom!

I forgot to take a picture of our first course, which was kale and mushroom quiche, sausage rolls and cheese, but here are courses two and three.
I made egg salad sandwiches with radish roses, celery sticks and Mom had picked up some amazing carrots from Galey Farms (local), so we each had one of those too. For dessert, I'd bought two mini chocolate cheesecakes, 5 macarons (which I cut in half), local cherries and local strawberries. Mom additionally brought more local strawberries (just picked that morning!), and a bar of salted caramel dark chocolate. We both had lemon ginger tea and fizzy water. We were stuffed after.

Vizzini was extremely interested in Mom.
"I've missed you. But first I must lurk."

That picture cracks me up - he stared from behind her chair for at least half an hour.

But then...he jumped right up and settle down on her lap.
"Now that's what I call a massage."

Mom's the Cat Whisperer. Vizzini was all over her the whole time; he's missed his favourite people. And so have I! Thanks so much for coming over, Mom! What a fun tea-time!

  2. Lovely to see your mum with Vizzini - and what a feast, too!
I love your mullet. I giggled about that book, I got most of the references except for the "tiger" one. My brother was a fan in the 1980s, I'll have to ask him!
Love the outfit, add a big straw hat and you could give Diana Rigg's wardrobe in Evil Under the Sun a run for its money! xxx

    1. They really missed each other, Vix!

Aw, thank you! The book is rather silly, and 'of its time', but we've hung onto it, and good thing I did! That's funny that you get most of the references!

Awesome! I just looked that up, and I totally need one of those straw hats!

  3. I love your mullet (it speaks of energy, flair and ease of care) and admire your bravery in switching hairstyles! (I am in the dark about all of the book’s references. Might make for an afternoon research activity.)

As for your outfit, very fitting that someone who wears spectacular Big Boss Lady Pants (the entire outfit rocks!) can whip up a sensational tea! I sit here in pjs, pre-breakfast, virtually relishing the spread. I enjoy a good properly done up tea. To celebrate my retirement my Aunt took Fred and me to tea at a place called Westbury Gardens. It was magical. :) Most of all, though, always warms my heart when you and your Mom get together. ❤️ Apparently Vizzini feels the same way. :)

    1. Thank you so much, Laurie! It feels very light and easy, and it was so quick for styling this morning. I always have a few days of experimenting before I settle into a style. I've had so many hairstyles, and love trying new things out - it's just hair! It grows back!

Thank you - this is one of my favourite classic outfits. I didn't actually have to prepare anything other than the egg salad sandwiches! Your tea out sounds wonderful!

I was so happy to have Mom over and to hang out in person for a nice visit. We had a big long hug too - I'll never take that for granted again. Vizzini was so spoiled with the attention too.

  4. Your hair is very stylish-the term mullett makes me think 80's hair bands! What a lovely visit with your mom and so posh! I have a lovely tea and desert set DH bought me before we got married. It has only been used a few times mostly because I need more plates, but why did I not think of using during this last year more? Reminder to myself to up the style in all things of life-including visits with loved ones. Your mom and you are two gorgeous ladies.

    1. Ha! Totally, Sam! I'll have to crimp it our bouff it out big, ha ha!

It was an awesome visit, and I love breaking out my good China and fancy plates and teacups for this special occasion. You definitely need to use your tea and dessert set, Sam!

      Thank you so much.

  5. I love this haircut on you. A great modern intepretation of the mullet hairstyle. That book looks fun 😀.

I really like your pink trousers paired with those pointy red shoes. The jacket is a dream as well. What a gorgeous styling.

    I 💕💕💕Vizzini, he is a charmer.

    1. Thanks so much, Ivana! It feels good to have something different after more than a year with the same style. The book is pretty silly and 'of its time', but I'm glad we kept it.

Thanks! I love this outfit, and will likely repeat the elements together again at some point.

He really is. We love his big personality!

  6. First of all, your hair! I love it! To be honest, fear gripped me when you mentioned the word mullet, as I never was a fan of the hairstyle back in the day. Your modern version is something else entirely, so funky, fresh and sassy!
Your afternoon tea outfit is pretty funky too, and perfectly co-ordinated. No wonder your stylist gushed over it.
As for the actual afternoon tea, I can only imagine your excitement for finally being able to invite your Mum over, and it seems you've treated her as royalty by the looks of all that scrumptious food!
I had to giggle when you mentioned he was ensconced on His Pillows. Claimed them for his own, has he? xxx

    1. No fear, Ann! That's my motto when it comes to my appearance, anyway! I do think it's time for the mullet to be embraced in a modern way! It's such a fun style. I'm glad your fears were put to rest, hee hee!

I did go overboard (I ate the leftover chocolate later that evening!), but Mom's definitely worth it!

Yes, those are Vizzini's pillows now. Heaven help the person who uses them when visiting us!

  7. Oh my goodness, what a lovely post. First, how exiting that your mother visited! That is so nice, and how thoughtful that she brought a purple mask. Now, I'm singing: to shy shy, hush hush eye to eye! What a fantastic outfit, I loved these trousers the first time I saw them and stil do, what a great bum, can I say that.... or perhaps I already did that before.... and then there is your hair!!!!! Love it!!! It is Joan Jett and it looks so damn good! Excellent decision!

I have a deep and abiding love for my Big Boss Lady Pants - thank you for the compliment on my backside, ha ha! Glad you like the hair! I do too.

  8. I love your hair! I rocked the modern mullet a few years back when I went from super long hair to what was for me at the time super short hair. Mine didn't look as good as yours! :)

I really like your colourful outfit, I can see why it got compliments and it's so great you could have your mum over! What a beautiful spread you set up!

  10. So many good things in this post. First and foremost - your mom! How wonderful that you are now able to have her in your home to visit. So happy for you all (and of course Vizzini)!

I love the red with the pink. When we were girls, my mother would not let my sister and I wear those two colours together. Nor would she let us wear blue and green together or white after Labour Day. So many rules which seem absurd now. I love your outfit and if my mum were still around and could see it she would too.

Your hair is so flattering. When you said mullet I was, frankly, worried, but I think you have a cross between a free flowing shag and a mullet and it looks beautiful.

    1. Thanks so much, Nana! Isn't it awesome that Mom was able to visit? I just loved being able to hang out with her - and Vizzini was so happy to see her.

Thank you - I mentioned your comment today! That's so funny, those old rules. They don't make a ton of sense when you view them through today's lens, do they? I'm glad you mum would like this!

Aw, thank you - I'm glad it isn't what you were fearing!

  11. We handle Spike the same way and have since he was little. Taking the mystery away makes for a better behaved kitty in my opinion. Spike is never really interested in people/table food. He reacts to other animals and people with mild curiosity. Otherwise new stuff gets a sniff of examination and dismissed as Boring.

    1. It works so well, doesn't it, Megan? Vizzini completely calms down once he realizes, "Oh, I can't eat that, not interested." Vizzini will hoover up scraps from when we eat (he loves when we have spilly people over, ha ha!), but he does stay away from our food for the most part - and that's because we let him smell what we're having.

  12. You are the undisputed queen of incredible colour combinations. What an upbeat, thoroughly fantastic outfit + palette. It suits these very last days of spring, as summer rounds the bend again with gusto to an absolute tee.

  14. Cool hair cut! What a lovely lunch you had with your Mom, and I bet Vizzini was thrilled to have attention from someone other than you and L. Sylvester loves when his "Aunt Heather" comes over (the only person in my bubble) as she always gives him lots of butt scritches.

    1. Aw, thanks, Shelley! Yes, Vizzini was rubbing all over, and begging for attention pretty much constantly. Glad to hear Sylvester has a "minion" for giving him scritches, ha ha!

  15. I love the red and pink together topped off with that fabulous blazer! The mullet book looks funny - Paul Calf was a character played by Steve Coogan, and he also played the sister Pauline Calf. That takes me back to the 90s! Thanks for linking up!
