All Those Things I'm Not "Supposed" To Wear

Oh, be still all those clamourous Interwebz "advice" posts about what women over 40 or 50 or whatever should wear.

[swear alert!]
You know I'll wear whatever the fuck I want.

  • Blouse - Vero Moda, thrifted; last seen here in June with crackle and pink
  • Skirt - Banana Republic, consignment; purchased here for $12.50
  • Shoes - Dr. Scholl's, consignment; last worn here (2nd outfit) with DIY harem pants

Let's see. I'm wearing:

  • Sheer (the blouse)
  • A mini skirt
  • A metallic mini skirt
  • A metallic leopard mini skirt
  • Bare legs! With knees! Quickly, get me the smelling salts!
  • An overtly punk belt
  • Big clompin' heels
  • Exposed toes! Old toes, hide the children!

Oh, and I have purple hair. And tattoos! Better lock me up before someone explodes from my awesome.

"Um, bored now. Put me down, woman."
I felt like a million bucks today, in case you're wondering.
"Are you done yet? I feel a cuddle coming on."
This is the first wearing of this new-to-me skirt - it did feel a little short, but I managed just fine. I'm excited to wear it with blue tights and over-the-knee leather boots come fall. Cover your eyes, those of you with delicate constitutions.

The stuff:
Those shoes are for taking charge.

Badass bling:
Subtle, I am not. And I am happy with that.

  • Belt - gift from Ruth
  • Ring - Soul Flower
  • Earrings - Glee

  3. haha yes I vigorously nodded my head at "before someone explodes from my awesome".

When we wear what makes us happy we look and feel good and should continue to do so no matter what our age or what the 'rules' are.

    1. You are so right, Mica! Age is irrelevant; it's all about how you feel in what you're wearing.

  4. And you LOOK like a million bucks! Quite like this outfit and quite like how you wear it! To heck with those who think they dictate the "shoulds" and "should nots" of style, regardless of age. Fact is, as my very wise and much-younger-than-me daughter-in-law has said, if you feel good about how you look then it will radiate and others will think you look good, as well.

Also, I don't comment all that often, but I read your blog religiously (via email) and thoroughly enjoy your style sense. Yup, I've said that before, but it bears repeating. :-) Plus I have some cool outfits in my closet for when school resumes. Funny how during the summer I am quite content to go with relaxed shorts, variety of tees (from slouchy to dressy) and occasional sun dresses. But get me back into teacher-mode and I have come to appreciate putting together coordinated and increasingly more colorful and funky outfits. Good for me, good for the kids; win-win for all!

    1. Thank you so much for the lovely comment, Laurie, for taking the time to write. Confidence is the best thing you can wear, no matter what age, size or any other criteria.

I am thrilled that you're wearing colourful, funky outfits! It's teachers and other adults like you who show kids how to be themselves, and how to express themselves through their clothing. It takes courage. Rock on, Laurie!

  8. What's wrong with these people, don't they have something better to do with their time? I always imagine these bitter, old hags who resent anyone having a good time. Only maybe they ain't old. Anway, the whole kaboodle is awesome and you had every right to feel amazing. Rock on Sheila x

  12. Hear, hear! I'm with you entirely and think that how happy/confident/comfortable one feels in their attire trumps any so-called fashion rule massively.
