An Odd Silhouette - Leopard and Lame

Wee, I look so happy here! It must be because I did a neat(er) job dyeing my hair this past weekend, and I have less scalp staining than normal.
Or it could be that I just really liked this outfit?

  • Top - Lord & Taylor; purchased here a couple of weeks ago for $26.70
  • Skirt - Club Monaco, consignment; last seen here in December 2015 with brocade
  • Shoes - Tod's, thrifted; last worn here (2nd outfit) with Kim's suit for my birthday in October 2015

This isn't the first time I've experimented with this silhouette of boxy over full (last time here). One of the pieces from that previous outfit (the top) is in my Capsule right now, so I'm determined to make it work on me the way I want it to; I'm not so worried about the skirt - I know I like it.

I feel like my style is evolving again (as it is constantly), and I'm less enamoured of the strong hourglass as I have in the past. It's nice to give the waist a big of a rest and change things up - I know my waist is still there! I've been feeling a bit in a style rut lately, and am seeking a fresher approach to my look. Not trendy, but not the same ol', same ol' either.

I feel that this attempt at this shape is more successful than the previous one because you can see more of my arms and legs. Shorter skirt and shorter sleeves means that the overall look is less overwhelming on me. I am not tall (5'4"), so proportionately shrinking both pieces in the outfit helps keep this looking stylish and deliberate instead of frumpy and "oops, I didn't mean to hide in my clothes."
This is my new leopard top - it was quite comfy and soft to wear. I needed to wear a camisole under it, though, as the waistband of the skirt was really itchy, so I was tugging my tights up all day to cover my bare skin. Dang that lame (lah-MAY, darling!), always being itchy!

However, my coworkers had really strong reactions to the skirt - all positive - as did I. I'd been only looking at this skirt as a holiday piece or a novelty piece since I got it. Aside from the above "last worn" link, I've only worn it here in an awful, shiny pink outfit, and here in a very vintage-y look. I felt like this outfit really untapped the full potential of it. I'm excited to wear it again.

The stuff:
I waggled my feet at most of my female coworkers. Yes, fabulous shoes, yes, real Tod's, and yes, I really thrifted them for less than $30.

Brass bling:
Less gaudy than shiny gold.

  • Cuff - Midzo, vintage expo
  • Earrings - thrifted
  • Crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop
  • Ring - POLY, vintage show

Probably the item in this outfit that I was the most happy with was the tights - they are a deep wine-y brown, and I really like how they pulled the bit of brown in the top out. I felt very polished and stylish today - and that's how I want to feel every day!

  1. I can't believe that you're only an inch taller than me. You look so long and lean in your photos! Like seeing a movie star in person...I thought you'd be taller ;)

I love that skirt and especially with the coat from December.. Definitely flattering.

  2. I think you nail it so many times when you try different silhouettes as you really reflect and learn what works for you! :)

And I'm glad to see you'll be encouraged to wear this skirt more - itchy fabric aside it's really beautiful.

  6. Very nice outfit, Sheila and the two pieces are unusual. Love the shoes, too!

How about a short slip/petticoat under the skirt to stop the waistband itching?

  7. I am quite enamoured with that skirt and the length is very flattering on you - you've got stellar gams and should show them off more frequently!

  8. Veronica, thank you for the suggestion - I would probably do a camisole over a slip, as most slips are too long for a skirt this short. Otherwise, I'd be all over that!

I also like the colours and of course your Tod shoes.
