Mom-Day Lunch, a Wee Shop, and We Made the Cover!

Welcome back, my friends!

We had some very exciting news - Tweed Magazine has hit the street! And the big reveal...WE MADE THE COVER!!
You can read the e-edition here (safe link, no account needed - flip through and enjoy!). L and I both did an interview and have another full-page picture leading into the article - the other folks featured are fantastically fashionable as well, so do read the whole thing. We found out about the cover a couple of weeks ago, but haven't been able to share that until the magazine came out. So exciting! More pictures in a bit...but I forgive you if you scroll down!

So...L and I were both off on Thursday, so we met up with Mom at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel for a scrumptious "Happy 27th Anniversary" lunch while the surf pounded the seashore outside.
I'd hoped that Tweed magazine would have been delivered to businesses by that day, so that I could give Mom a copy, but had heard that the print edition had been delayed a few days.

  • Turtleneck - Betty Barclay, thrifted; purchased here for $11.95
  • Dress - Kenzo X H&M, consignment; last worn here (2nd outfit) in August 2023 for brunch
  • Boots - Original Sabado, Fluevog; last seen here in February for a Mom-Day Adventure
  • Leather jacket (below) - Michael Kors, consignment; last worn here in February over purple velvet

We were able to share the picture of the cover with her finally, though! "I mentioned you!" I crowed.
This dress was kept out for fall/winter - it's a year-round dress - but I hadn't managed to get an outfit in with it until now.

It's a firm favourite - I just love the red tiger print, with the blue/pink print on top.
I layered this dark red turtleneck (new-to-me) underneath for warmth. The promised blue skies and high temps did not materialize, booo!

So swooshy!
Also very see-through/sheer! I layered fleece-lined tights under it, plus my tall boots.

A cropped and studded leather coat over it all.
Handy for extra pockets!

Done up.
I was glad of the ginormous Greek head scarf. It also matched this outfit really well, a pleasant surprise.

I tossed it nonchalantly around my shoulders and felt very swanky.
I was Incognito (wearing sunglasses) off and on all day, but forgot to take a pic with them.

Accoutrements:
This scarf was very snuggly and warm - I'm sure it's a fine wool or wool-blend.

  • Purse - Rebecca Minkoff, consignment
  • Gloves - Parkhurst
  • Scarf - thrifted; purchased here for $9.95

The stuff:
I bought a set of Dr. Scholl's inserts at the drug store earlier in the week, and put them in these boots for extra walkability and comfort, with arch support and heel cushioning. Ahhhh...much better. As comfy as Fluevogs can be off the shelf, it doesn't hurt to have a little extra.

Gold bling:
The dress is oversized and massively voluminous without a belt - I love this vintage wide elastic one.

  • Belt - thrifted
  • Lucite/gold bangle/earrings - Alexis Bittar, consignment, gift from L
  • Black snakeskin bangle - vintage 80s, thrifted
  • Silver/crystal ring - Uffizi Gallery gift shop, Florence, Italy
  • Double snake ring - consignment
  • Tiger articulated brooch - consignment

I pinned the tiger onto my shoulder.
See? There she is.

L and I arrived at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel and settled in at our table in The Snug.
The aforementioned waves. It was very blustery out! By this point, the e-edition of Tweed was available, so I could to show it to Mom, and share the cover with her FINALLY.

"Show me the cuffs," I demanded. Doesn't she look lovely? What a great blouse!
The necklace is made from 1920s (possibly earlier) beads that belonged to her great-grandmother.

Mom-daughter selfie!
Love that pink leather jacket! Some awesome daughter must have bought that for you (heh).

Our friends Spence and Kim were in town for Easter weekend, and L had plans to meet up with the guys for a loll about town, followed by a gathering at the Garrick's Head Pub. I decided to have a browse in a few shops and then meet up later.

To my sadness and surprise, Vanity Fair Antique Mall was closing! It was their last day, and the place was crammed with people - I couldn't bear the crush, so I left empty-handed, but oh, I am sad about them leaving - L has bought me so many beautiful things from there over the years, not to mention all the things I've gotten for myself. Nearly all of my Brutalist jewelry is from there, and it's been a regular gift shopping destination - I also got my 20th anniversary ring there.

I soothed my sadness with a poke through Botched (new favourite curated vintage shop), where I found this crinkly orange and pink top.
The pinky shade matches my hair.

It was $38.00.
I'm excited to mix it with some of my spring and summery clothes.

I popped into MONA to share the news about Tweed with owner Deanna - all of the consignment store owners in town know each other, such a great group of folks.
I spied these wonderful fuchsia pink wide-legged trousers there.

Pockets! And they are washable!
My shiny pink Boss Lady Pants have reached an end with me, so I was thrilled to find a new pair.

Someone's hemmed them (to my perfect length) with iron-on interfacing.
I hope that stays put while I wear them or I'm going to have to sew them by hand (arg).

They're by Joie, and retail for around $189.00.
For me? Only $42.00.

I also popped into the Vend Collective, where I found this pebble-grey (sorry, Vix!) cropped Adidas hoodie.
I love the black stripes and it's a thick plush inside.

Don't worry, no belly will be exposed on me! Cropped styles suit my short frame (I'm 5'4").
I'm excited to style this.

Adidas "Primegreen" - that collection is made from sustainable materials.
This is from 2020.
It was $30.00 - it retailed for $89.00, so I was happy with that.

I spied a sign as I was walking down Fort Street for Fickle Flea Studio (link here 'cause I love!) advertising a vintage pop-up. Duh, of course I had to check it out!
The lovely Laura assisted me - so nice to meet you! - and I found a couple of treasures for $20 each.

This bracelet has to be the same era as my other snakeskin hinged bangles, which are all from the 80s - all tourist souvenirs from Italy.
I have never seen one with a clasp being two birds before! My deep dives on the interwebz revealed zero hits for anything like this. I was really happy to find it in red, a hard-to-find jewelry colour I'm always looking for.

The earrings are Brutalist, but unmarked.
The little balls are 3D. They are likely silver with gold plating. These are very similar to a belt I have, which is also vintage.

I joined the gents, who were chowing down on a plate of nachos at the Garrick's Head when I arrived.
From left: Spence, Casey, Nick and L. Kim, Chris, Ali, and Yvonne and Randall arrived later on.

I got a text from the editor - the hard copies of Tweed magazine have arrived!!
"Can I get a dozen copies?" I asked. I'll coordinate a pick-up early next week when I'm back at work. Friends and family, please keep/pick up copies for me! I need approximately one million copies, hee hee! I think I should frame one, right?

But look what dear friends Randall and Yvonne did! They actually went to the publisher's office and picked up copies for L and I (they also snagged one for themselves).
You guys!! I love you so much - thank you! Mwah!

OMG, I had not seen the inside picture! It's Mom's favourite, of us posing near the green door in the alley (go here for our exciting photo-shoot),
Hey, L, they matched the header font colour to your pink trousers! Such a fashion icon you are! It was thrilling to see ourselves in an actual print magazine. Bucket list item...TICK. Cover of a magazine...TICK!

Picture looking into Bastion Square while I waited outside for Kim, Spence, Nick, Casey and L to join me at the end of our evening.
Such a pretty part of downtown - the Garrick's Head expanded into this corner space on the right in 2012. It was an Esprit store for many years prior to that, with a tiny pub parked in the rear (it's the oldest pub in Victoria, from 1867, and it's haunted, about it here). I used to work just off Bastion Square (when I was an elf at the Christmas store in the 80s/90s) and know this area really well.

Off to enjoy more weekend! How are you doing? Please know that I read every comment and am nodding along with you. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. That sure was fun to see and read your interview. Local celebrities. It's a great way to steer folks to second hand and both up style and conserve resources.

  5. Wow, congratulations for making the cover! I went to your link straightaway to read the interview!
I guess you're local celebrities now and you'll be asked for your signatures :-)
It's great to see that swooshy Kenzo X H&M dress again, and it does look fantastically badass with that Michael Kors leather jacket. Loving your Mom's blouse and pink leather jacket as well.
It's always a wrench when a favourite business closes down, isn't it? Thankfully you were able to soothe your sorrow with your very successful wee shop! The fuchsia pink wide-legged trousers, the bird bracelet and the brutalist earrings are my favourites! xxx

  7. Of course you made the cover, you two are the most fabulous folk in town! That was a great article and both photos were gorgeous.
Your Mum looks splendid in her peppermint pink blouse and your Kenzo number is sensational. L looks every inch the rock star dining with your pals.
Your jewellery finds are fantastic and I bet you'll make that Adidas hoodie look anything but grey!
Loving that last photo, what an inviting boozer.
Have a fantastic weekend, you pair of superstars! xxx

  11. I can tell I've been away! Sheila and L on the front cover of a magazine? How totally fabulous and you both look wonderfully stylish - which you both are, of course. I shall catch up with the story over the next few days. Loved your mom day adventure outfit; your mum looked lovely as she always does. What amazing things you found on your shopping trip. Such a shame about the shop closure; my favourite charity shop in our local area in Ireland had also closed down I was sad to discover.

  12. I’ve read this post twice because it was such fun to share your enthusiastic excitement! Woohoo for being on the cover AND for having two super full page pictures of you and L highlighted! I see from an earlier comment that copies are only available locally, otherwise would have ordered one. Yes to your rhetorical question, you should absolutely frame a cover and hang it in your home!

Hi Helen, your pink blouse looks soft and gentle and the necklace is a perfect pairing with it, , though I’m a bigger fan of your pink leather jacket because it’s such a vibrant color!

Sheila, great finds and, yippee, they are (mostly) bright colors. Oof, it’s disappointing when a favored shop goes out of business, especially if it seems sudden. We had that years ago when A.I. Friedman closed. It was a large and extensive art-craft-paper-framing store and there is nothing like it anywhere nearby.

    Happy Easter, April and Spring!
    Cheers, Laurie

I like your bird bracelet which look like planes to me!
    Your mum's cuffs are beauties!!
Sad about Vanity Antiques. I'm always gloomy when things close.
