Funky Friday: JC Penney Halston and Big Red Boss Pants

Happy Friday, my friends! I'm happy to reach the end of another week, and even more pleased that L is also booked for his first vaccine shot. Fantastic news.

Today, I decided to style up my new-to-me vintage Halston blouse, in honour of the new show about him starting next week on Netflix. Wouldn't it be cool if this shirt was in it?
While my blouse is not a "real" original Halston (as in from his boutique or from his ready-to-wear line), it's real licensed Halston III from his 1983 deal with J.C. Penney, the first time a designer ever did a collaboration with a non-high-end store, paving the way for all those "[insert name here] x H&M" collections.

  • Blouse - Halston III, vintage 80s, thrifted; purchased here for $22.95 (but was FREE on a BOGO deal)
  • Vest - Maison Scotch, Bohemian Chique, 2010, thrifted; first worn here in March in a Dr. Who ensemble
  • Trousers - Zara, thrifted; last seen here in October 2020 with a floral Kenzo jacket and ruffles
  • Shoes - Tod's, thrifted; last worn here (2nd outfit) with my gold lion dress for a Zoom party in February
  • Leather coat (below) - Baez Leather, consignment; first seen here last weekend in my Mad Hatter tea party ensemble.

L teased me about doing some "J.C. Penney catalogue" poses, but not in the morning. I need coffee in order to be silly!
I went with a very 70s vibe with this outfit, pairing the full top with my red linen high-waisted trousers (which have nice deep pockets).

Now that I know I can hem pants by hand, I think I will take these up about two inches so that I can wear lower heels with them.
I didn't want to wear a belt (there are no loops on the pants), so I added this black vest over the full blouse to bring the shape back to my body.
We have a new security guard at our building and she was very excited by my outfit. I do love an appreciative audience.

Masked up: I went with leopard.
The blouse still looks brand new, even though I can tell by the wear inside it that it's decades old and has been washed a kajillion times. Although the fabric is polyester, it's a much nicer polyester than what came before (not that horrid 60s/70s stuff) or after (the flimsy plastic that today's clothes are made from). It almost feels like silk, very slippery and soft - but it doesn't breathe!

Outerwear - I've decided to keep this coat in my coat closet with my other leathers, so that I'm more inclined to grab it.
I thought I might need to wear it in the office, but I was plenty warm in my blouse.

You can tell that I felt like a BOSS when I put it on with the wide-legged trousers.
This gives you a better idea of how the peplum lays without a ginormous skirt under it.
I adore these big red pants - aren't they awesome? They are a linen blend so wrinkle up a bit, but I'm not as mad about that as I used to be before I owned a steamer.

I added fingerless gloves for the walk to work.
I wish I'd worn a scarf - my neck was cold.

Outerwear stuff:
These knit fingerless gloves are excellent for fitting over my giant rings - leather gloves don't work over big rings.

  • Gloves - Parkhurst
  • Mask - by Mom

The stuff:
Make no mistake, these are high - 3" heel after the Shoe Math of platform. But so cool! They're from Tod's Spring/Summer 2012 line.

Bold bling:
That's the other choker Mom bought from the "chill hippie" back in 1974/5. It has sandalwood beads on a brass base, and what I always thought were amber beads, but I did a little digging on some gem websites, and I am fairly sure this is carnelian or sard (info link here, 'cause I love) with a high opacity (it does have a nice glow). I think the centre bead has been heat-treated on the edges to make it a bit darker. Mom paid a bit more for this one ($10 in 1974/5 dollars), and says she wouldn't have let me pinch it  when I was younger - I didn't get it from her until I was older, I think in my 40s.

  • Choker - Mom's, vintage 70s
  • Gold hoops - 5th anniversary gift from L
  • Brutalist ring - vintage 70s, vintage mall
  • Klimt ring - consignment

And now, my friends, I'm off to enjoy my weekend, and will be back on Sunday with tales of adventure. It's Mother's Day in Canada this Sunday, so a very Happy Mom's Day to all of you out there, whether you have actual kids or are just a mom-like person to others in your life. Momming people is hard work, so don't forget to thank the mums you know!

  1. Goodness, do I adore this ensemble! It's chic and eye-catching, has a marvelous 1970s vibe, and looks comfy to boot. Plus, I've always had a thing for red pants (and clothes in general), so those awesome wide-legged trousers are right up my alley.

Wishing you a relaxing, beautiful weekend, my dear friend!

  3. I'm a big fan of the 70s vibe which is going on in this outfit! That Halston blouse looks absolutely fabulous with those high waisted trousers - I can't believe they're Zara! - and the waistcoat. Your Mum's "hippie choker" fits the bill perfectly too. And yay, another wear of that awesome leather jacket. No wonder you got complimented by your office's new security guard. Isn't it horrible that we still need scarves and gloves this time of year? It's May, for goodness sake! Have an excellent weekend Sheila xxx

    1. Thanks, Ann! Me too - I love the 70s aesthetic, especially in the menswear-inspired looks. I know, Zara! Every so often, they do something nice!

I don't mind wearing scarves and gloves in spring, just like I don't mind them in fall. Hope you had a good weekend too, my dear!

  12. Wow, what a terrific ensemble. I love every item, from top to bottom. But that leather jacket blew me away. What a find!!!
I wouldn't hem the trousers to some 'in-between' length. Wide trousers are so tricky when it comes to hem length. You either opt for high heels or you hem them for flats. But the shoes you choose with the trousers, are the shoes you should wear. I bet it would otherwise look 'not-just-right'. At least that is my experience.

    1. It's a really incredible jacket, isn't it, Greetje? No, I won't be hemming to an in-between length, just to the floor when I'm in a reasonable heel. As they are, they still drag on the ground when I'm in a 4-inch heel/platform, which is too long for me. These heels are not wearable for my busy work days when we go back to normal.

  13. The vest is such a nice layer with this! I really wish I'd loved my vest more - I did try one for a while but I could never quite make it work, so I donated it a while back. I always like them on others though! those fun red pants are such a great pair on you - and that beautiful layer jacket is a great topper over them! :)

    1. Thanks, Mica! I really like how it slimmed down the sides of this very full blouse. They are tricky to work with, though, so I totally get that you passed it along.

Thank you! I love the bigass pants, and being able to wear the jacket again.
